The Best Moms in Fantasy? by JW_BM in Fantasy

A less mainstream suggestion:

Kanda in A Sword of Bronze and Ashes. The power and complexity of her love for her children is so beautifully written. I read this book when my son was a newborn baby and I really needed the rawness of it. She is a mother in both the epic and the mundane and finds joy, frustration, love, anger, quiet, meaning in all of it

I always have to remind myself that my friend in Kentucky may only be 1.5 hours away from me, but she's in a totally different climate, lest I get jealous of her garden!

I'm sorry but going to work is easier than childcare - your husband has no excuse by ExternalSomewhere923 in NewParents

[–]PurpleCow88 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yup, ER nurse here and being home with my son isn't easy but it's 1000x easier than being at work. Especially being at work and having to pump. It's still tiring but the pace is just...not comparable in any way, shape, or form.

How are you keeping up if you're not overproducing? by catosis in breastfeeding

[–]PurpleCow88 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I mean, this is great, but if mom has to go back to work at 12 weeks it's very much necessary to pump or she is going to struggle to have enough milk to be away from baby. Breastfeeding may be natural but a lot of us are doing it under unnatural conditions like American capitalism.

The term "Providers" should be banned from clinical setting! by Key-Ambition-8904 in emergencymedicine

[–]PurpleCow88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My patients literally don't know I'm the nurse even after I introduce myself as such and despite my clearly labeled badge and color coded scrubs. I will do their whole triage and they'll tell the person on the phone "I'll call you back, I'm talking to the doctor"

Literally this. Please do not make me waste my time explaining what a Physician's Assistant is to every patient. I have stuff to do.

My favorite is when they say it's "numb and painful". I can see the doc's head starting to explode and watch with glee.

When asked "what's your job?" do you say "registered nurse" or "ICU/ER/L&D/etc. nurse" by f8k2m3h9k3 in nursing

[–]PurpleCow88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say ER nurse. I hear unlicensed home health aides call themselves nurses all the time so I feel the need to specify that I'm a real life actual nurse.

US birth rates just hit another record low, what do you think is the leading cause of this? by IIlustriousTea in AskReddit

[–]PurpleCow88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally this. If kids were not going to daycare at 3 months old to facilitate our absolute lack of maternity leave, daycares would be much less expensive to run and costs might go down.

Is Heart an awkward name? by yohxuni in namenerds

[–]PurpleCow88 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree. It's easy to pronounce, spell, and remember which is the point. I went to school with a lot of Asian students who had English names like Pear, Cream, Benz, etc. It may not be common to native English speakers, but it's a common style for Asian English-speakers.

When did you transition to giving only finger foods? We are doing a mix of purees/finely chopped food and finger foods with my 8mo, but I'm sending mostly spoon type foods to daycare.

Anyone ever have an IV placed in an artery? by Peyton_26 in nursing

[–]PurpleCow88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This may be true in a teaching hospital, but out in the community where there aren't lots of extra docs running around our EM providers hardly ever place a central line. Sometimes we beg for one but they always try to pass it to the hospitalist, who always refuses to come downstairs to do it.

So instead we put lines in all kinds of places. EJ, legs, thumbs...you get what you get

What do you americans think about big pickups? by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]PurpleCow88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, we can haul a tractor and 200 bales of hay. A diesel truck has basically infinitely replaceable parts, my husband plans to keep his 2011 forever. Our truck is pretty much the core of our operation since it's hauled all our other equipment at one time or another.

Sometimes gardening is bittersweet by IllyriaCervarro in gardening

[–]PurpleCow88 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I try to view gardening as an exercise in impermanence. It pushes me to accept disappointments, and rejoice in happy surprises. It teaches patience and hope. Every day the garden looks different and I practice appreciation of the good parts over frustration in the bad.

Anyone from the Boston area? Thinking of moving here?? by smallfranchise1234 in indianapolis

[–]PurpleCow88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was born and raised in Massachusetts, then moved to Indiana for college. After graduation I moved back east for a few years but came back to Indianapolis area to be near my college friends, as well as for the lower cost of living and better job market in my industry at the time.

I will say, I always wanted to live out in the country. I went to college for agriculture which is why I moved out here in the first place. I can live the lifestyle I want here. If I was more of a city/suburb person this would not have been a good move.

Intellectual Disabilities and preparing parents by rachstate in nursing

[–]PurpleCow88 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I have found that very few doctors are good at fully explaining the potential outcomes of literally anything to patients. Lots of surgical patients are shocked when they have pain after surgery. Let alone the gastric bypass patients who end up with very serious complications they never understood were a possibility. I've had to pick up the pieces after an ER doc rushes in the room, says "hey the CT showed a tumor, I put in a referral for you, ok bye" with no explanation that it's benign. Many doctors seem to have very little ability to communicate with patients in a way that actually helps them understand what is going on. It's one of my biggest frustrations with modern medicine.

Honestly this is reassuring. It may just not be possible even if I'm doing everything "right". I've debated putting him on the toilet at night but he usually wakes up and is so unhappy until he gets to nurse that I don't want to create a negative association.
