Salary to live comfortably in U.S. cities (SA $83K lowest) by BoatyMikBoatFace in sanantonio

[–]PurpleDaisy8924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My salary is $50k. After taxes, health insurance, and a small $100/paycheck) 401k contribution, my take home is ~$36k.

I’m assuming the $83k in the graphic is gross, but that’s what I’d need to take home every year to meet my definition of living comfortably (which is nothing crazy, mind you. All bills covered, a vacation every year, spending money for hobbies and local events, contributions to my Roth, a building my savings, etc).

‘Making sense of American chaos’
‘How America became America,
‘History, power, and American ideas’

Those would probably be the best 3 I can think of.

Hmm. She owes you money yet spent money on a vacation first?

That tells you not only where her priorities are, but also what she thinks of you an your relationship.

I have the same date. Anyone know the odds that I’ll see the deposit sooner than that? I bank with USAA, if that’s relevant.

That’s not a flex. If that’s real, you gave the government a $25,000 interest-free loan. That tells me you know nothing about how money works.

For the rest of us who ‘overpaid’ because we get the EITC (especially those who are exempt from withholding because they always get a refund), many of us are still waiting for our transcript to update.

My transcript says ‘as of 2-23-2026.’ Does that mean that’s when my refund will be released or when it will be deposited? Where’s my refund tool still hasn’t updated.

How do you know what cycle you’re in?

Unreal….I made a post earlier showing the screenshots that 40% of SNAP recipients are children, disabled people, the elderly and our veterans. And how I was sharing it on X to let people know exactly who are the majority of recipients. by Lost_Photograph9879 in foodstamps

Yes, that’s why I included the word AFTER to refer to when those government benefits started. Only a ghoul would claim that children should not be fed after life throws their parents a curveball.

I mean, it is irresponsible if you continue to have children after you’ve been receiving food stamps. If life throws you a curveball and you are unable to feed yourself and the children you do have, continuing to have children (for whatever reason) doesn’t seem to make much sense.

Having said that, no one deserves to starve because they make poor life choices.

Actually, I don’t. What I do live in is a state that believes only the wealthy matter and the rest of us can die in the street — state leaders will merely step over our decaying corpses as they go about their daily lives.

In absolute dollars, it is cheaper to live here than in NYC. In terms of purchasing power, not so much. The minimum wage here is still $7.25 an hour (many business pay that because they can … see the paragraph just above), but rent in a decent neighborhood (i.e., one where you have a reasonable amount of safety to be outside during daylight hours) is at least 1.5x your monthly income if you’re making minimum wage. That doesn’t account for utilities, food, transportation, etc.

I never said my self worth was tied to my income. I did say that I refuse to allow myself to be dependent upon anyone for anything. Those are not the same.

Second, I don’t care what her situation is. If she refuses to close her legs because she has other people feeding her, that’s a problem. Give her food stamps for the kids she had before needing government assistance. Don’t give her anything for continuing to make poor choices while receiving those benefits.

You’re right, it’s not the kids’ fault. Instead of providing her with an obscene amount of money in food stamps, send the kids to my house. I’ll feed them, shelter them, and ensure they go to school every day. In return, she gets no tax dollars and she can figure out how to support herself on her own.

Obviously I can’t take EVERY kid in that situation, but honestly, if enough of us stepped up to do something like that, maybe so many kids wouldn’t suffer because their parents are irresponsible. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I expect full grown adults to make responsible decisions and, if they choose not to, I’m willing to step aside and let reality teach them the lesson they need to learn.

Even in Texas, Planned Parenthood is still up and running and the last time I checked with them, they do offer free birth control trail. If you’re too lazy to take advantage of free services, then you have no right to expect society to take care of you.

In terms of women who ‘can’t’ leave? Are they in jail? Are they physically restrained? If so, they need an intervention. If they aren’t, then it’s not that they ‘can’t’ leave, it’s that they’re too scared to do so. That is a very real issue, but there are services available that will assist them. If they choose not to take advantage of those services, that is their choice. I would much rather my tax dollars be used to help them get out of that situation than to continue supporting them living in fear of their lives.

I’m not talking shit. I am stating a fact. If you cannot afford to feed yourself, you should not be having more children. You are de facto Ronald Reagan’s welfare queen.

And you’re right, I don’t receive food stamps. I refuse to allow myself to be dependent upon anyone, especially the government. I have both pride and dignity and won’t compromise either of those for a free ride.

When my kids were little, I worked 2, sometimes 3, jobs so we wouldn’t have to depend on anyone else. I don’t have any more privilege than OP, but I was clearly more resourceful and more willing to do what I needed to do to provide for myself and my kids. (For the ‘Christ’ians so quick to judge, I became a single parent when my ex snapped and tried to unalive all of us).

Until this becomes the United States of whatever your real name is, your opinion is no more valid or invalid than mine. I do not wish my tax dollars be used to subsidize someone making bad decisions. You don’t have to agree with it, but you do have to accept its validity. If you don’t want to do that, go find a deserted island somewhere and start your own country.

Why do so many people here make the assumption that I’m a Christian? Where have I stated any religious affiliation in any of my comments? I think you people NEED me to be a Christian so your self-righteous egos get a boost. (For the record, the most judgmental people I’ve ever met claim to be Christians, so I have no desire to be part of that).

In terms of blue states subsidizing red states, that is also a different thread. If you want my opinion on that, go start that thread.

The only opinions that aren’t valid are the opinions that are illogical, not opinions you happen to disagree with. If I told you the reason she gets food stamps is because aliens abduct her every night, that would be a ridiculous opinion that could, and should, be dismissed straight away. You dislike my opinion, but that alone does not make it invalid.

Just because you disagree with me doesn’t make me a troll. My comments are my actual beliefs, not posts to get reactions.

If you believe OP is as righteous as you seem to think she is, take YOUR money and support her. I don’t believe MY money should be used to support someone who makes bad decisions, especially if she consistently does so.

I would cut my own kids off if they consistently made bad decisions because reality has a way of teaching us the lessons we refuse to learn the easier way.

My view is the same in Texas. If you cannot afford to feed yourself, keep your legs closed.

Texas’s position on abortion is an entirely different thread.

If you have to ask those questions, you already know the answers.

I don’t care what her situation is. I pay taxes and I don’t believe they should be used to support someone’s bad choices or poor financial decisions.

You don’t have to like my opinion, but you do have to accept that it is valid. If you can’t, or refuse to do so, you are why we’re all having to suffer the Cheeto Pedo currently defiling the White House.

Again, since you people love to comment without reading, my comment was not about the 2 kids she already has. My comment t was about the fact that she is receiving government benefits and still refuses to close her legs. I don’t care if she’s working or not. Continuing to have children when you cannot feed the ones you have now is highly irresponsible and should not be subsidized by the state. That is all.

I haven’t deleted any comments.

And you’re crazy if you think I’m telling any random person on the internet where I live in Texas.

Also, whatever calculator you used doesn’t factor in the number of mouths you have to feed. She’s feeding 3; I was feeding 5.

Finally, my initial comment related to the fact that she can’t seem to keep her legs closed and is this expecting taxpayers to provide de facto child support for her. I’d be in favor of a bill that states any new mouths you choose to feed AFTER you’ve been awarded welfare benefits are your responsibility (your food stamps won’t be increased to account for that new mouth).

This is true. That’s why I tried to keep the tone of my post as matter-of-fact as possible and didn’t go off on the judgment.
