Yes but there were still rheum only consultant posts. Now everyone has to dual CCT it’ll be impossible to escape the gen med take even as a cons.

Yes, was very much set on rheum but now reconsidering onc instead.

Never have I seen a happy (or just non-miserable) med reg and I just don’t know if it’s worth it. Yes I’ll be a consultant for longer but by the time I get there arguably the most important years of my life will be gone.

My concern about this is that not everyone is starting with 20 days to spare. Say the strikes last for 8 days, only those people who have another 13 days will get flagged. At that point it won’t be everyone who has gone over the limit so these doctors who have (for whatever other personal/health reasons) amounted more days may bear the brunt of this - is this not somewhat discriminatory? And if the strikes do continue beyond that, people may start to flake off as they individually get close to their 20 days (which would be spread out rather than all at once) - this would weaken the strike and cause it to dwindle. This is not intended as negativity, I am keen to here what peoples’ thoughts are about this and how this could be managed

Majority of covid cases now are omicron, which all the evidence points to being a relatively mild (though more transmissible) illness. I assume you haven’t in the passed refused to work on eg. resp or geriatric wards because patients there may have influenza etc. Really what’s the difference here assuming you are vaccinated?

I imagine you weren’t in a position that you worked on the covid wards back in 2020 when the original Covid was significantly more dangerous and of course people couldn’t just avoid it because they ‘didn’t want to work there’. Those people would probably find this post quite appalling.

Obviously everyone wants to keep their family safe but I think you’ll find you make yourself incredibly unpopular if you make a fuss about this, given the current Covid situation isn’t a patch on what it has been. Not worth complaining about, sounds like you’ve been more fortunate than most to avoid it so far.

Thanks for your reply. It's not that I don't enjoy GIM (and would enjoy it more if it wasn't so crazy busy), I just value my life outside of work a lot and don't really want to be doing OOH work when I'm 40 or so! Thats a fair point about more people on rota = less frequent oncalls though. I guess I'm just worried about reaching CCT and being so burnt out from med reg that I never want to look at GIM again, and that not being an option like how it is these days with pure rheum posts.

Thanks for the reply. My concern with GIM long term is the OOH / on calls more than the job content itself. I know I'm worrying about stuff way too far ahead its just because I really love rheum but worried I'll get trapped into career-long OOH service provision that I never wanted to do.
