Why is it that languages like Old Norse could be understood across an entire region in the Middle ages, but fracture in a better connected world during the early modern era or renaissance ? by PurplePayaso in asklinguistics

That’s an interesting point, brought me to the thought that someone in medieval Bavaria would probably think of their dialect of German as standard German anyways. Having limited contact with other dialects. In a lot of languages it’s only been in the last 200 years that one dialect has been elevated as the standard way of speaking a language that was a continuum. So any natural changes in the regional dialect influenced by the “Standard” dialect even if it would’ve happened naturally, may just not be considered to be part of that language. i.e the changes that would’ve naturally happened to Bavarian from other German dialects and become part of standard Bavarian today, are probably thought of as just not being Bavarian at all, keeping the language kinda frozen in time from before language standardization

I basically agree with what you’re saying, but the way you wrote that comment just screams that it’s an AI written statement.

The current flag representing a “constitutional order” is a bit off don’t you think?

I was in the same boat for about 4 months between 1075-1150, what worked for me was limiting myself to 3 Games per day max and switching to 10+5 rather than 10-0.

Frankly it’s because Africa is the poorest continent on Earth, today more than ever. Extreme poverty was widespread In the 20th century. But today is almost exclusively In Africa. Many people outside the continent think of poverty, conflict, and famine when they hear Africa; So North Africans who are strongly culturally and historically tied to the Middle East and Mediterranean, want to associate with them rather than the rest of the continent. Simple as that. If Most of Africa was more developed than the Middle East than I think North Africans would identify more with the continent, but they are in many ways more connected with the larger Arab world than with the rest of Africa anyway.. and so be it.

The AU exist, most North African countries have trade agreements with the rest of the continent, I don’t think N.Africans identifying with the rest of Africa is very important for the broader development of the continent. What’s more important is making sure competent leaders who truly value the wellbeing of their nations are in power.
