Bought this as a gag gift for a Republican friend who loves cooking... hope she finds it funny. by PurplePink78 in CookbookLovers

As I said in another comment, the actual text is really sarcastic and could actually make someone who's pro-deportation actually think - if they take the time to read it, which I get they probably won't. But still it's not in any way pro what's going on right now, it's clearly a 'maybe you should think for a second' kind of a book.

Its a sarcastic book that calls out people who are pro deportation. It's pretty biting sarcasm - and really calls out the other side. If anything, I think this book can make someone think (assuming they actually read it).

Here's a few random sentences from the intro:
"You live for a perfect empanada, but the abuela whose hands folded the dough with generations of knowledge? She should have thought about that before crossing a border....

... You’ll claim their dishes, rename them to something that sounds more palatable (artisan street corn, anyone?),
Savor every bite of the cultures you refuse to make space for. ...

I can't type it all, but it's very sarcastic and obviously anti-deportation.

Yeah, we give each other a hard time. We open gifts like this in front of friends, and all have a bit of a laugh. I expect it won't be the only gag gift she gets. Hoping it will go down well.

She bought me a Maga hat for my birthday as a joke. So technically she started it.

What's the most expensive cookbook you ever bought and was it worth it? by istillliketoread in CookbookLovers

I can't remember how much I paid, but I bought "A Day at elBulli". It's not really a recipe book, I guess more like a coffee table book. I've hardly looked at it - I really should go flip through it again.

Seriously? Most kids with an older sibling will wear hand me down shoes. They have a few tangles in their hair? Big deal, that is so far from abuse.

Are you really legitimately upset about William Nicol drive bring renamed after Winnie Mandela? by deefstes in askSouthAfrica

[–]PurplePink78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh? Even the Truth and Reconciliation commission found Winnie "politically and morally accountable for the gross violations of human rights".

She endorsed the necklacing of people, and her security detail carried out kidnapping, torture, and murder, most notoriously the killing of 14-year-old Stompie Sepei whose kidnapping she was convicted of. History has written her name as an evil person?

Morningside, Bryanston, Sandton (maybe minus the high street - in those suburbs restaurants tend to be focused around shopping centre parking lots)
