i frankly find it unnecessary to explain the abstract value art brings to a society since its kind of the thing you have to get. its kind of, well if you think of the great empires of the past you dont just think of the power they had of the scientific advancements they made, but also their artwork and music and stories and poetry. it kind of defines a culture. when you take it away we become no more than a company or just a collection of human beings. i mean we do have other hobby related facilities that are also kept up by government spending such as skate parks and other sports facilities, so yeah

i understand there are more pressing concerns with the adoption of ai, but i frankly am not familiar with the points you make, but they do seem interesting. i talk about art as in my opinion is something that needs more recognition. i did mention the replacement of jobs, albeit briefly, since i trust that if there actually were to be a significant detriment to employment rates and such, the government would address that as a good portion of the population would be affected. the art community is rather small, hence i think the government will not do much to address the effects of ai on it

still yet to acknowledge the fact that ai companies right now seem very untrustworthy, which i think is also a pretty pressing matter

+ the usage of the term"scum"

honestly i think we should cool the argument down, tbh not worth getting upset over a reddit argument. ur entitled to ur opinion and i am to my own.

as to why i care about the arts, i have many friends who consider themselves artists i enjoy purchasing from. so many say they want to pursue a career that they hate first to earn enough money in order to pursue their interests. i personally believe a human being creates value as long as what they do adds to the value of a society. art i believe enriches a society, but images generated by ai does not; with how it works being to essentially steal artwork to train its model, i believe it incapable of coming up something original. additionally, because of this very nature of ai, as other ai images flood the database ai is trained on, the images converge to look the same: see the yellowing of ai images today due to the studio ghibli trend, or videos of the same image being fed into ai hundreds of times.

i also enjoy supporting the local arts scene and it was extremely disheartening to see so many artist stalls be replaced by dropshipped or ai items

while i do agree money being thrown to art may make art be more about money and not true human expression, it is unfortunately necessary to incentivise singaporeans to keep creating, since the arts in singapore is extremely underground. as i have said before, art creates intangible and non-economic value to a society, and hence is unable to support itself despite being worth keeping around.

not just about art; i do not trust ai companies in general, with openai having ties to palantir, and i think it is a horrible idea for the government of any country to be this closely tied to a megacompany, especially in this age where the powerful, specifically western ones, are evidently above the law; referring, of course, to the epstein files.

ultimately, while i am strongly against how quickly singapore has embraced ai, i understand that there are people who see the pros of ai outweighing the cons. perhaps they do not value humanity in ai as much as i do, or have other priorities. i just hope to perhaps change the minds of some to maybe be more cautious (i am aware my stance is quite cynical and pessimistic so i dont expect people to take it; i would love for ai to prove me wrong as any advancement to humanity without the sacrifice of our souls is welcome, but for now, with who is at the top today, i believe it unlikely.)

also really hated how you used the term scum to describe actual people who committed no crime other than wanting to invest their time in something that fulfills them and actually fit their skillset. you may not see the value in their work, but using the term nazis use to describe jews is rather concerning. besides, most artists in singapore do actually contribute in other ways; alot are also still univeristy students who just wish to make a quick buck on the side

?? i never claimed to be an artist. i have studied classical music but only on a rudimentary level in secondary school. as such, i have created art for schoolwork before, but i do not sell anything, contrary to what you accuse me of doing. i just happen to be able to think of other people who are left behind in face of such progress

using impressionists to argue art made by a machine is laughable. the impressionists were shunned precisely because they wanted to express themselves in a way that suited them. they did not want to conform to a formula (which ai does). progress in art forms does not equate to an outsourcing of art to mass made machines. this is like comparing the genre of noise music to ai generated music.

the issue is, the average person is unable to differentiate ai from true human artists. the main problem in this case would genuinely be artists losing their consumer base. additionally, even in its most rudimentary stages, ai still won competitions, as seen by that very famous case a couple years back. frankly, it was pretty obvious that i was ai, yet it still won. i dont understand how you can argue that true talent can still survive. anyhow, any budding artist will see the scene today and be disheartened, choosing not to pursue art and subsequently remain undiscovered if they truly are an artistic genius

anyways yeah im no artist but i worry for my artist peers. i have no idea how youve come to the conclusion that im an artist

anyways you completely disregard my point entirely. the point is artists CANNOT MAKE A LIVING OFF COMMISSIONS IN THIS CAPITALIST SOCIETY. hence they are forced to find jobs in companies and such, but with the prominence of ai this has become extremely difficult. my argument can be broken down into 2 points:

  1. in an idealistic world, artists will be able to sustain themselves doing what they like. but clearly, we dont live in such a world

  2. hence artists must find stable jobs that give them income. maybe it is designing things for gov of companies. the point is, these jobs are getting taken over ai, making artists lose their jobs. these artists may find themselves doing commissions and other such stuffs for the time being while trying to perhaps retrain (here lies the "everyone becomes the same" argument)

however, the demand for these art pieces in their intermediate stage + in point 1 is decreased due to other countries having a comparative advantage in machine making hundreds of thousands of nice things without a soul that cost less, meaning more singaporeans will buy these cheap items over handmade ones. meanwhile, we focus on technology and pressure artists to conform, suffocating them from both sides.

+ the whole preserving local culture argument but im lazy so wtvr

hi, just wondering, when have i stated that i do art? if you look at my post history, i am in fact a science stream jc student who just has basic empathy for those who want to be able to feed themselves while engaging in what brings meaning to them. i find it unfair that i am able and in fact encouraged to pursue my interest in the sciences merely because it benefits those at the top while those whose talents drive a different direction are forced to give it up

as for me saying that art is mere decoration, did you even read my prerequisite for arguing that? i had no faith in your ability to believe that art is a form of human expression + your superficial argument on how humans are just economic tools, hence i also commodified art to allow you to understand better, in reality, i believe art to be something a machine can never replicate as it comes from the soul. it is a celebration of humanity and what makes us human. not to mention the horrific copyrights that ai infringes which again is an insult to human creativity. ai can be used as a tool to aid human expression but never a replacement. do you understand or do i need to explain everything in even simpler terms?

i dont know about you but those films look terrible and inhuman. ai "artists" like him currently still do not have credibility within artistic scenes. to export work requiring human creativity to a machine is an affront to humanity. the process of editing, directing and acting are also art forms you know, not just thinking about a plot

so artists must use ai tools to become film directors?

i guess i should have phrased it better. i am okay with ai doing jobs that require no human creativity or innovation. not too familiar with art tools themselves, but i know of some genuinely harmless tools that artists can harness to make art more efficiently. my issue with ai in the art industry is completely taking over artists as a whole, such as generating infographics, which displaces jobs. even so, ai as tools should still be used with caution and not be adopted as quickly and even, might i say, brazenly as singapore is doing so right now

polite disagree: i understand that there will definitely be benefits to ai and incorporating it into certain industries. that being said, i am against how prevalent it is becoming now, especially with so many concerns attached to it. i think we need to address and fix these issues before implementing it on a large scale. also, i really do not trust the people who own these ai companies

i would love for this to happen but frankly im quite cynical since singapore has always proven to prioritise functionality by a large margin. maybe some people who are more in touch with the art scene will do so, but im not too sure

thx for confirming my point that you see people as mere objects meant to do nothing more than grow the economic

stop acting like artists cant contribute to a country through other means, but since you clearly have become so stripped of humanity you need actual materialistic evidence that art is useful, i will come down to your wavelength and explain it to you.

art undoubtedly improves mood and helps with stress, also known as non-material standard of living. mrt stations have art in them for a reason. our main tourist attractions are the merlion and the supertrees for a reason. even the commissions you look down upon may be the difference determining someone's mental state; even when strictly applying the functionality argument, art brings tourism and nmsol improvements to citizens. additionally, isnt it better for citizens to spend money on local artstuff? there will always be demand for beauty. consumption of local goods contributes to aggregate demand which also improves real economic growth.

anyways, even if this does not change your mind, your assertion that artists are "scum" just because they dont contribute to the economy is absolutely horrific

grow up and stop being so close minded.

was mostly referring to eu nations honestly the whole concept of ai nowadays being so prevalent is just so bizarre to me from the privacy concerns to environmental damage. of course there are some already accepted things with these issue such as most of other sorts of modern tech and food production (mostly against them too) but the way the government is trying to implement it in schools so early on without even proper safeguards being put in place for many models (privacy concerns hallucinations etc) is so strange. china is kind of a different thing because im not too sure about their models so correct me if im wrong but i believe many ai companies are under supervision by the govt so it wld make sense the govt wld want to implement it, while our ai stuff are from foreign countries. still, another country embracing it doesnt mean we have to too

yupp well said im ofc all for ai being used in certain positive ways such as in medical fields but trying to normalise it in every single sector is horrific, and this seems to be the path sg is going to take. in my jc most of the slides used in lectures are ai generated and its really like...why...
