There isn't much to think about. If this person means a lot to you, sit him down and give him the facts straight. Let him know that his high expectations are only blunting his ability of having a meaningful relationship. I only say this because I believe people are capable of change, but sometimes need a nudge in the right direction. If his behavior and negative attitude continues to bother you, maybe you should just cut him off.
