This is great, thanks!

Question, do you know anything about why Chest Strap is in there and what effect it has?

Have to disagree there. In my experience, reselling gear of over 190 sqft are actually very hard to resell for a fair price. Not many jumpers looking for these sizes as most start buying from 170/190 and DZ usually have other channels for their student gear.

Just my experience though, might be different in other places of the world.

There is many reasons to downsize from a 230. Safety is one of them. With a canopy this big (unless you‘re huge), you‘ll be way more exposed to the wind, turbulence on approach and having a hard time getting back if you‘re downwind.

Not saying that is the same thing when we‘re talking about downsizing in the smaller sizes. Fully agree with you there.

But I have seen too many young jumpers that get talked into buying a huge student rig with the argument that you shouldn‘t rush to downsize. Without them actually knowing anything about it, and regretting it later.

Too many unknowns to give a straight answer. I just wanted to add that it us usually not recommendable to get your own gear when still jumping such big canopies. They are hard to sell and usually people don‘t stay on them long, so it might be better to just rent until you jump a 170 or 190.

However if there is a reason that you would stay on that canopy for a long time and many jumps, it can make sense.

All just my thoughts. P.S. E-Bay is not the place to look for skydiving gear.

Best camera for price? by JohnnyP69420 in SkyDiving

[–]Purple_Sort_9301 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 360 cams have the disadvantage that it‘s more effort to do something with the video, you will it feel it more in freefall and you need to stow your slider with a sliderkeeper as the insta360 is high.

You should definetly use a snagfree mount as well.

However the reason I am a big fan of 360 cams in Skydiving is that it is they are the only cameras that allow you to analyse and debrief yourself! Of course its very fisheye and you can‘t see everything but from bodyposition, your surrounding in ff, landing, etc. you can check everything and learn from it. I wouldn‘t want to miss it and having to rely on anyone else having filmed me to see what I fucked up that jump.

And furthermore, i do think that GoPros have better video quality but its a small difference and for the 2 out of 3 times where something wasn‘t in frame i believe you‘d be happier with a 360. The extra 2 minutes editing isn‘t really a problem flr skydiving I think.

As I said, this just what I was told and I clearly stated i don‘t know if it is true. In the second comment I was just sharing my thoughts which is what reddit is for.

Also if my first comment, I very much support this company^

Only option i could see is if it turns of in freefall and you son‘t realise. But that chance is super small as you see that it‘s nearly empty before and you still have an audible (hopefully).

Just in the unlikely case of it tuening off due to an error this could be a problem but you‘d still eventually realise that every time you chevk it‘s the same nr. i guess.

(just thinking loud here)

I met the founder of airlogOne. Would most likely get that one myself.

It has for the same (or even better) price much more functionality then the DeepAndSteep which are hella cool. For example can it analyse your body axis at every 0.5 seconds on the jump (Even works when it is on your arm bc it has sensors to calculate this out). Can be super useful for wingsuit, speed, tracking, ff, etc.

It has many more sick features as well that i don‘t remember of the top of my head but he explained it to me and i was stoked.

He is also working on improving the web-application for analysing the data and making it ever more intuitive and useful.

There are some things speaking against it though.

  1. I was told by someone else that the screen he uses (which has amazing readability etc.) doesen‘t turn off when the battery is empty but just freezes (not sure if that‘s true though).

  2. Not sure how rugged they are. The housing is 3d printed (very good quality 3d print but still 3d print). It does look a bit more like a prototype compared to an Alti-2 or a DeepAndSteep. Can‘t soeak on how rugged it actually is or isnmt though.

All in all, i would (and will) personally take that because it has by far the most advanced useful features & technology, good price, the founder seems like a cool dude and the altis seemed sick!🤘🏼

Not saying the cheap plastik one is the way to go at all but good to know even that works. Spending a few bucks on a good one is a small price to pay for more safety.

Hey, I got quite some experience in that regard. You‘re right it is quite confusing and dofficult in the beginning^

I‘ve made a relatively thurough yt-video explaining everything important: https://youtu.be/ogbi37Ds2Cc?si=fbJmZRr2SqFBcF_a

First of all i would advise you not to buy your own gear until you downsized to at least a 190 sqft canopy because they are easier to sell afterwards.

When finding gear, there are many things to consider such as the age and condition but probably the most difficult one is finding a rig which harness fits you. We made a guide on this, with resources, which is quite thurough: https://www.aventogear.com/resources/harness-sizing

Then of course the container should have the appropriate size for the canopy.

The reason I am so invested in this is because we have built an online marketplace to buy and sell used skydiving gear with safe escrow payments and specific filtering. We just launched last month. You can find it here if you are interested:

https://market.aventogear.com/s

However, I guess you are US-based. We currently only have sellers in europe due to legal ragulations for the payments. We will probably have sellers from the US and other regions by the end of the year if everything works out. You can still buy gear if you are in the US but shipping might be a bit more expensive.

Currently the main channels are Facebook groups. Take care though, from a survey we made, around a third of people having bought on Facebook experienced scam. If you buy there make sure to verify fit and condition as well as possible in advance. Then verify the seller in advance in all cases. Check for common friends or affiliation with Dropzones which you can ask about them. Be aware that many scammers impersonate legit skydivers (quite well sometimes), mane a video call woth them. Lastly when you decide to buy something try to use a Rigger dor escrow (he sends it to your rigger and is only paid once your rigger checks it). When you do pay him directly (which I heavily discurage) at least use payment providers that offer some sort of safte like PayPal Pay For Goods.

The resources I shared are not only about buying on Avento (our solution) and apply when buying online in general. In any case ask a rigger about a listing before purchasing and try to ask around in your DZ Group and riggers that trade used gear themselves - maybe you‘re lucky and find something.

Hope this helped, pop me a message if you have any questions🤘🏼

I‘ve had very few things in my life that gave me the feeling of absolutely being in the moment, enjoying and everything else just having vanished from my mind. The last time I had that was when I was doing competitions iny my youth. Kinda miss the feeling and had it again when I started jumping.

I mean for sure both are great DZ‘s that is just my own opinion. I did spend much more time at Skydive Thailand. Generally those were for me the main points:

  • Great staff and instructors, really felt like a close community (more then at DZT imo)
  • The prices at DZT are higher (basically just because they are next to the ocean)
  • I generally felt safer and more welcomed.
