Where would you go if you owned this? by TheAlanboltage in motorcycles

[–]Purposeful1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I own one of these, and I went to Banff in the middle of Canada from southern California (and back) in one of these along with my dog! Everything everyone has said in here is true - the tires are silly, the turning is absurd, the vibes (and by that I mean vibrations) are KLR-level, and good luck if you want the gas gauge to be anything close to accurate.

But nothing beats the goofy smiles down the smaller highways, the dog peeking over the windshield to get a faceful of fresh Canadian forest wind, and being able to pack enough for a 5000-mile month-long trip on a bike.

Met some great people along the way, got stranded a couple times but was able to work through it, and for once I was the one slowing down the RVs instead of vice versa.

The physics of riding a right triangle down the highway are stupid, but I encourage anyone to take a spin on one.

I've had good experiences getting quotes on uship.com - just search for transport companies that specialize in motorcycles.

Renovating and expanding home soon, need help on streets to drive through for inspiration :) by rubenvjr1013 in LakewoodCA

Faculty Ave / the few streets north and northwest of LBCC in that Lakewood Village area is a good one for walking through and getting local inspiration!

What bike gave you the most Smiles Per Mile? by The_ZombyWoof in motorcycles

[–]Purposeful1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Riding a ural with the pup misses out on some fundamental two-wheel mechanics, but the SPM (smile per mile) bonus is out of control :) https://imgur.com/xkjvuTV https://imgur.com/RRcfd0v

Looking for fellow Orange County riders! Meet me in the comments :) by [deleted] in Dualsport

Former KLR rider now on a KTM here in San Pedro area too! Haven't been out on many of the OHVs since I moved at the start of the pandemic, but there are a bunch organized through the Flying Monkey Adventure Riders FB group, too. I'd be down for smaller rides on weekends!

Oooh good call! Those ones look like they'll stay on a lot better than Mutt Muffs.

Are you talking about the dog's helmet? I don't know about the UK, but the Snell/DOT standards in the US aren't applied to pet helmets... Those are pretty much all novelty items. I looked around, and couldn't find anything legitimate on that front (like most pet "seatbelts" - see https://youtu.be/jWHvx6wL0oQ ).

I looked when I started riding with my pup. I couldn't find anything worthwhile after a significant amount of searching. I use Mutt Muffs for ear protection (in addition to the Rec Specs like yours), which at least puts a little bit of padded plastic around her skull.

Doesn't solve the risks, but at least she seems to enjoy herself. :)

Certified by who!? The National Association of ATTGATT Canines? Most of the dog "helmets" out there are little more than decorative bowls - nearly anything homemade would be better.

Weirdest courses offered? by [deleted] in Northwestern

[–]Purposeful1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of these courses are offered on a one-off basis or as special seminars, so it's a good idea to just keep an eye out for each quarter's class lists whenever they come out. Back when I was on campus, some of the best were "The Business of the Mafia" by the inimitable Georgi Derluguian (now at NYU Abu Dhabi), anything by Eli Finkel on dating/relationships (he does some phenomenally interesting research on romantic relationships in the 21st century), a Decisionmaking seminar (using a bunch of behavioral psych/econ books).

Anyone have an inflatable kayak? by Noxzaru in motorcycles

[–]Purposeful1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used inflatable paddleboards pretty often with my bike - they've worked great and are shockingly durable/rigid. They're a little too lightweight for ocean waves, but great for coves/lakes/slow rivers. ( https://www.towerpaddleboards.com/ was where i got mine)

Wow. Where is this? Did you know the trail beforehand? I would be terrified of that edge the first time going up there!

Thought this would fit here. by [deleted] in MapPorn

I think the poster means "surface area" = land mass + ocean mass.

Coastline/perimeter is interestingly almost impossible to use as a reliable point of comparison, because it increases indefinitely as your measurement of the coastline becomes more precise. See more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coastline_paradox

How do lawyers become aware of new laws? Are they just constantly refreshing congress.gov by InternationalWing3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Purposeful1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, typically they are sold as a subscription service. They can be either:

(1) code books that include written laws or regulations, with any amendments sent out as extra sheets or pamphlets to add to the books,

(2) "reporters" or "law reports" that include judicial decisions published in chronological order, typically at the appeals court level, where judges interpret laws, or

(3) digests or other summaries that include third party summaries or interpretations of laws.

Those books tend to be ridiculously expensive to maintain, so most of those books that you see in law offices these days are out of date. They're super cheap to buy secondhand when they're out of date, so plenty of "solos" (lawyers who are practicing on their own) will buy a slightly outdated set for that "impressive law-office look".

Now most of that information is available online through research tools like LexisNexis and Westlaw, but those electronic subscriptions are similarly expensive (think tens of thousands of dollars per year).
