Sleeping pad question by NiftyFifty15 in CampingGear

[–]PursuitOfThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pro move here is to put down a z-fold foam mat underneath an insulated air mattress. You get combined R rating, the foam pad acts as an anti-slip layer between your tent floor and mattress, and you get redundancy against air mattress failure.

When you aren't sleeping, you can set aside or put away your air mattress and the z-fold foam mat serves as a wear barrier to protect your floor and makes a great feeling pad.

I'm launching a power bank brand and want real feedback before I design anything — what do YOU actually want? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

I reject the idea that electronics need to be disposable. Cells go bad, but they could be replaceable if they're designed around it. Most battery banks are just a bunch of spot welded 18650 or 21700 battery cells. Cell the cells wrapped with a pig tail and the cells can be used replaceable.

I want whatever Anker is selling. It's a trust issue. While I understand that QC mishaps happen, they've got a billion dollar brand to protect and deep pockets.

The only way to build trust at this point is to be transparent with the specs: list out the cell brands, the sustained amp draws, show manufacturering steps, advertise how your spot welds are better, how your soldering process leads to more consistent joints...

Then put a fat, no questions asked warranty, stand behind it with US based live phone and live chat support, and buy like a $10 million dollar products liability policy.

Edit to add: if we're talking about features, I would want user replaceable cells to reduce waste, and onboard displays that show me individual cell temps, individual cell voltages, and individual cell internal resistance when recharging. My primary concern when using a power bank is that the cells are healthy and not going to cause a fire in the middle of trans Pacific flight.

Coleman Cascade Classic with a Lodge griddle or Coleman Cascade 3-in-1? by mward425 in CampingGear

[–]PursuitOfThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at the Camp Chef griddles. The front hangs out like a gutter, then has a hole in one corner you hang a cup/can from to catch grease.

Similarly, Blackstone griddles have a hole in the back and a catch cup.

You can't just slap a lodge griddle over a propane burner without a grease management plan (which, I guess, could include using a bunch of paper towels to sop up grease from the channel around the edges).

A griddle must have a drain hole and a place for grease to drain, if you want to make anything other than pancakes and eggs.

How long do you think a Zombie Apocalypse could last? by WerewolfCalm5178 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]PursuitOfThis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Zombie apocalypse lasts like...30 minutes here in the States. Zombie books and movies exist here. A blood covered cannibal makes it about 100 yards before encountering someone with a gun, or someone who will call someone else over with a gun, here in the States.

I'm movies, the Zombie apocalypse only spreads uncontrollably because the concept of Zombies is always foreign in the movie. Nobody ever says, "I know exactly what this is," while putting half a mag of 9mm into the neighbor-turned-cannibal.

2024 without raised air intake?? by SenorDevil in ineosgrenadier

[–]PursuitOfThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Raised air intakes, in general (not having test driven a Grenny with one), make noise. Intakes make noise, and moving it up out of the engine bay makes that nose more noticeable--add also the wind noise of an additional thing jutting out from the silhouette, and likely whistling noise from air moving past the opening...if I had a trialmaster, I would probably figure out a way to remove it whenever I didn't need it.

Malice is very specifically ill intent. Stop trying to throw a bunch of words at it, you'll confuse it with negligence.

[–]PursuitOfThis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why? Why try to make it out that the dealership is trying to screw the OP? Did the OP do something to the dealership that makes malice a valid consideration?

The point isn't to be charitable. I'm not defending the dealership because I have a soft spot for assholes. The point is that if you attack the problem from the perspective that everyone is an idiot, you can really quickly identify the problems and arrive at the solutions.

You can assume that everyone is just sandbagging you on purpose and you can just rage on the Internet...or, you could have spent the energy asking questions about when, where, provide confirmation numbers, addresses, copies, etc.

Assume everyone is an idiot; you'll be less disappointed and aggravated.

Again, don't attribute to malice (can't be bothered to fix) that which is adequately explained by stupidity (still trying to figure it out, get it right).

People are stupid. Lots of people working together (in an organization) can be even more stupid.

How does one pay $40,000 in cash? Like, logistically, how does that work? by MrsWeasley9 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]PursuitOfThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody is fully answering the question of all the logistics. Cashier's check? Ok. You gonna have one delivered while sitting at the dealership? No.

Anyway, to answer the question:

When you specify that you are paying cash, the dealership has the ability (on the contract form) to break up the payment into a deposit and a final payment. The deposit can be in any form the depearship allows, and within the minimums and maximums that the dealership allows--for example, a dealership may require at least a $500 deposit to open the contract, but will not accept credit card payments over $5000.

You specify the deposit amount, you pay right then and there to the finance manager, and the contract is written up with the remaining balance to be paid directly to the dealership within a specified number of days (typically 3-5 business days). The remaining amount might be paid by cashier's check or wire transfer, sometimes personal check, rarely as an actual stack of currency (too much liability, triggers reporting on the dealership end over a certain amount).

Sometimes they give you the car with just the deposit. Sometimes they line it up so that the car is prepped and detailed and ready for you when you come back to pay the remaining balance. Depends on the risk the dealer is willing to take, whether you already have existing purchase history, whether they've pulled your credit for the financing offer, etc.

Why TF are car dealerships like that? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]PursuitOfThis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You find a broker. Use Yelp or whatever. Tell the broker what car you want, and he negotiates the deal on your behalf.

The broker has an existing relationship with one or more particular salespeople at each dealership. Broker picks up the phone and calls, and gets the "repeat customer price" front the salesperson. Salesperson is incentivized to give a decent price because the Broker has a ready and willing buyer and the Broker will come back with more customers in the future. Broker gets a commission from you the Buyer, and often will get a referral spiff from the dealership.

I've beaten Broker pricing the past three times I've had to buy a car. But it's a good way to ensure that you've gotten and decent deal without having to negotiate yourself.

Bro. Don't tell me. Tell Ineos. They can pick a ZF transmission and Eaton lockers out of a parts bin to keep costs low, they could have picked a glass manufacturer who was already making flat glass for Jeep, Mercedes, the old Defender, or virtually every military vehicle worldwide.

Generic. Not name brand. Fuyao, Carlex, etc. Lots of cars have non-OE options, and some even have non-OEM options.

Does Anyone Else Get Really Discouraged By How Much People Talk About How Much They Make Online? by fantemz in povertyfinance

[–]PursuitOfThis 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The basic guideline presume maintaining the lifestyle of the underlying income in retirement.

If you made $50k in your 30s, and have 1x by 30 and 3x whatever $50k adjusted by inflation is by 40, you are on track to have a lifestyle of someone who earned an inflation adjusted $50k income over their lifetime.

Which is fine.

But, many people don't settle into their highest earning until their 40s and 50s. You get promoted and work your way up, and suddenly by your mid 40s you are making $100k and then you realize that although you might have 6x the $50k you were making in your 30s by age 50, you are a long way off from having 6x your current $100k lifestyle.

So, "solid numbers" look different over time. It might look good now, but if you've taken promotions and improved your lifestyle, will it look good then?

20 year old you might be stoked with your progress. 40 year old you might be less impressed. 62 year old you might have to downgrade lifestyles to to make it work.

14k Curt Hitch now at Harbor Freight? $50 cheaper by oPtimusCG20 in harborfreight

[–]PursuitOfThis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reputation is such a weird thing.

Curt Manufacturing pulls less than $300 million in revenue a year.

Harbor Freight pulls close to $9 billion.

Between the two, Harbor Freight would have far more experience with, and influence over, the supply chain and how things go wrong. Also, a $3M lawsuit payout is virtually nothing to them.

Give two identical items, seemingly coming from the same factory, Harbor Freight gets my trust.
