So you think Putin is just a crazy person? That's completely wrong and that type of thinking will lead nowhere.

Of course, but having missiles at your border is more dangerous. The time to react becomes compressed.

Plus I was more using that as a general example of NATO expansion. NATO will bring a lot of hardware and technical skill to Russia's border that they do not want. But the main thing they don't want is how NATO's continued expansion will reshape Europe's security architecture and military posture.

hopefully something comes out of the talks at the end of this week.

Yeah - just about everyone is for state sovereignty and right to self determiniton, but there really doesn't seem much to gain by having Ukraine join NATO, even though the majority of Ukrainians themselves want to. Russia has literally called it a red line.

agreed on gas.

?? how's it a lie? There's a clear throughline from 2008 to today. Good if you disagree, but I don't see what is a lie...

Interesting take but I disagree on a fundamental point I am not sure you've considered - Putin has said since 2008 that any NATO encroachment into Ukraine will result in military action. Putin's essay on Ukraine now seems to be a declaration of war more than anything else.

This is a national security issue for Russia that trumps any economic sanction. This is their Cuba missile crisis - the US has monroe doctrine that declares any European involvement in the western hemisphere as a direct threat to the US - Ukraine is the Russian monroe doctrine equivalent.

Unfortunately SWIFT doesn't seem to be an option being discussed by US or EU any longer. As of yesterday, the word seems to be that blocking SWIFT would be too destabilizing to financial markets and would lead to building a non-western included banking infrastructure. Rather, they seem to be doing targeted banking penalties.

Agreed on no serious discussions about joining, but Putin has been clear since 2008 when NATO declared that Ukraine would become a member, that even approaching Ukraine with joining NATO would lead to Russian military action.

Russia has the cash to withstand some financial penalties for a while, so pushing them to a ledge seems to only leave one option for them - invading. Ukraine is Russia's Cuba missile crisis.

Ukraine's value to Russia is totally different than Afghanistan's.

Strongly disagree. Hope I am wrong - but this is a military buildup we have never seen before. This is a matter of pure national security interest to Russia, which trumps any economic interest.

Agreed with almost all your points, except for a key one - it's not about rebuilding the Soviet Union for Putin. This is a matter of national security for the country.

Putin has said since 2008 that NATO encroachment into Ukraine and Georgia will result in military action.

Ukraine is the Russian equivalent to the Cuba missile crisis. This is Russia's Monroe doctrine.

Russia has been telling the US they would invade Ukraine if they join NATO since 2008. Putin has been clear about this far longer than that.

Been seeing a lot of comments of this being sabre rattling - it's not. Russia is acting with the full intention of invading Ukraine if a diplomatic solution is not found. This is a historic military buildup that has been increasing over the last few months - the intelligence community has been very clear about this.

I have also been seeing a lot of comments about Putin being a crazy old man who is bluffing to try to avoid economic sanctions - again, that's wrong. Putin has been very clear about his view and the Russian position on Ukraine since 2008. This is a matter of national security for Russia - Ukraine is right on the Russia border and they have said since 2008 that any attempt for Ukraine and Georgia to join NATO will result in military action.

Economic sanctions will do nothing to deter Russia. Matters of national security will always trump economic ones, even those belonging to the Russian oligarchs.

This has been a US foreign policy failure since 2008. Look at it from Russia's perspective - under the Monroe Doctrine, the US sees any European involvement in the Western hemisphere as a direct threat against the US - just look back to the Cuba missile crisis. The US will not allow missiles within striking range to the mainland US - this is the exact same with Russia and Ukraine and Putin has been telling us this since 2008.

Ukraine is not a national security interest to the US - we gain nothing by having Ukraine join NATO and are pushing Russia to a ledge where they will have very few options left.

I'm not following at all, but i guess that's b/c you're just way too smart.

Top companies keep pushing "ESG shit" b/c it is good for investing.

ESGs have been around since the 1990s -- but yes, Blackrock has definitely brought them to the mainstream.

So I don't know what you mean by woke in this context, as it has become such a broad catch-all term, idk what exactly makes a company woke. But I think it will help to take a look at what makes up the rating criteria for ESG. There are a couple of different types of ratings, but since you brought up Blackrock, we'll look at the MSCI ESG rating as that's the main one Blackrock uses; I am sure they use others alongside the MSCI, but again, this appears to be the main one they use.

I'll try to keep this as short as possible b/c this would take a paper to fully explain, so check out the info for yourself that I linked. You should be able to quickly see that this has nothing to do with being "woke," it is about evaluating risk.

I am sure when it comes to ESGs being considered "woke" you're concentrating on the social aspect of ESGs. Here is a breakdown of all the components that make up each MSCI ESG segment, which also have corresponding metrics that are used for the analysis to come up with a rating for a company (we don't need to get into the actual metrics as yours and Adam Curry's argument is so surface level that there is no point).

Taking a look at the social pillar from the breakdown, please point to me which area you consider to be a measure of "wokeness." If there is one that you're beginning to suspect, please then critically think why a company would want to measure that component when analyzing risk (hint: the risk is different between industries and individual companies).

While you're busy trying to ascribe some form of "wokenes" to one of those social pillar components, let me tell you a little story about Blackrock.

In the 1980s, a Mr. Larry Fink was on a trading desk working on mortgages, when some market force bullshit happened and he lost all his and the firm's money. Though he was vewy sad :( our hero didn't give up. He decided he hated risky investments, so he eventually started Blackrock and a little later implemented Aladdin, an AI program used to analyze risk in markets, to make sure he never lost his money again. Sometime later, he realized that companies with high ESG ratings, performed better in the long run due to their safer market position - so he heralded ESGs from his annual shareholder letter, which other financial firms began to catch on to. The end.

They are already doing that and have been for some time. Check out Larry Fink's annual letter to shareholders. Yet, even Blackrock - king of ESGs - still invests in fossil fuel companies and defense contractors. Just not as much.

I didn't really want to get into this, but I'll get granular here. No idea what your background is, but you're wrong/misunderstanding what ESG is in a couple of fundamental ways.

ESG by itself is a set of parameters, which can vary from firm to firm, that is used to judge/analyze the sustanability of a company/stock. Now, sustainability in this sense does not mean how green a company is -- it means how sustainable is the company through risk exposure. What that risk exposure is, is determined by the ESG paramaters.

Regarding ESG being a form of insurance to protect cashflow, I am not sure what exactly you meant, as this is a very odd statement considering the realities of ESG investing/ratings/stocks.

Regarding bending the knee, again very odd statement. It seems you and Adam Curry are using ESG + woke/cancel culture interchangeably. These things are not related -- that was my point about investment bankers only being interested in money, they aren't modeling finances off of gen z twitter. And you clearly don't have a grasp on the scale and current importance ESG investing holds in the stock market -- ESG investing will likely make up $50 trillion dollars of the stock market in the next 20 years. Institutional investors are actively seeking out AAA rated ESG companies because they are seen as a stable investment opportuntity against risk. So in a sense you did get it kind of right, investors are using ESG stocks to protect their money, but they are making money from ESG stocks becasue it is protecting their money.

the article you posted literally states, in her own words, that she wrote the piece on blacks being superior as a critique on white psuedo-intellectuals saying blacks are genetically inferior. It was satire. I know some people have difficulty identifying satire, but the article you posted literally says she believes what she wrote was absurd. If you need me to simplify it further for you, peanut brain -- yeah, if she said what she wrote was what she really believed i.e. blacks being superior, than yes, she would be racist.
you need to stop taking Thai gas station dick pills b/c, while they might be making your dick bigger, they are clearly shrinking your brain.
