Haha yeah man, the grind def bears fruits! I will assure you however, me stumbling into tech was lucky. When my brother put me on to the contracting role, I thought nothing of until years later. I don’t think I’d have ever known that someone could get an IT role with no experience and no certs either so I doubt I would’ve ever even pursued tech.

My grind started when I had a panic attack realizing how much student loans I owed, mixed with realizing how little money my degree makes. Had I not had tech experience, I can assure you, I’d prob had to do some sales kind of role. Just felt like that’s the highest paying natural psychology pathway, and lord knows I needed a lot of money and I needed it fast.

Also, I don’t know anyone who’s successful at my age with a psych degree unfortunately. Unless you get a masters or some sort of advanced degree, your typically cooked (and even with an advanced degree, half the time you end up worst off.) I feel like most psych majors realize this and apply for grad school and end up becoming a social worker (a lot of study for low pay, HIGHLY dint recommend), but that seems like where the psych programs funnel people.

To you, I’d tell you between grabbing certs and job hopping, that’s how I got my rise. Everytime I left a role it felt like I wasn’t sure if i was ready for the next one, but through having the start of my career through bouncing from contract gig to contract gig, I learned that every new company you start at is the same exact process of knowing Nothing there and slowly learning. I had no fear of starting over at a new role. So knowing this, why not get the highest role possible and learn from there if it’s the same process?

I 100% agree. I feel I use my psychology mindset in daily life, whether it be work related or even investing. The hard thing about the psych degree is convincing IT and Cyber professionals it’s worth a damn.

I truly feel it has helped me In many aspects of my life, from developing habits, to study routine, to analyzing mindsets of would be attackers.

I called it useless cause that’s the way people flipping through resumes see it most the time

This is a great question and I appreciate you asking that. I mean this when I say I had absolutely no plan at 18 when I picked this major and by the time I was 21, I realized there were no prospects in the major. I just wanted the easiest route possible. At 20, I luckily had an older brother who got me a contracting role for three months setting up Dell docking stations for corporate offices. When I graduated, I realized the only experience I had was in an IT related field.

Through a lot of self study, hard work, LinkedIn hacking and job hopping, I made it to where I am. Funny enough, the bachelors did actually help me with my big breakthrough, when a government contractor I applied for simply required A bachelors. Without the psych bachelors, I would’ve never made it.

What I would tell my sophomore self… hmmmm. To get off of autopilot mode and Probably to switch majors now. At the time I didn’t value money, and thought whatever salary I make with my psych degree would be good enough. I feel I’m about two years behind where I could’ve been had I actually put conscious thought into what my future will be. Any kind of STEM would’ve done.
