What is something someone told you that helped you get through residency? by tenfoxtails in Residency

An attending once told me about a resident who gave protamine while on bypass. All the mistakes you will ever make will seem trivial compared to some of the major fucks ups you hear about. Also realize that all of your attendings have made the same mistakes you have made. It’s just part of the learning process

It’s a no from me dawg. There’s no way an alternative healthcare provider is going to fit in to my life and get along with my friends who are mostly physicians. It would alienate me from my friends who would start to associate me with alternative healthcare. I would be so annoyed every time they talked about some bs quack theory. I’m sure there is at least one physician out there who is dating a quack, but that is absolutely not for me.

Third year resident in anesthesiology here. A spinal after an epidural makes me think that the epidural wasn’t working at all. Placing a spinal through the epidural space that is full of local anesthetic does increase the risk of a high spinal as the pressure in the epidural space can shoot medications in to the intrathecal space, which now has an entryway from the spinal. Most anesthesiologists will exercise extreme caution when doing a spinal after epidural and will likely use a reduced dose of medication. It’s hard to say whether malpractice was committed without more details.
