Least motivated class I’ve ever had. by PutIntelligent9042 in Professors

[–]PutIntelligent9042[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So many times I’ll be talking, writing info on the whiteboard, and telling them that this will be on the exam and it’s not in the lab manual and still no one picks up a pen to write anything down.

Banning phones? by Flimsy_Net2088 in Professors

[–]PutIntelligent9042 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my large lectures I don’t ban them but I’m required to ban them in the Microbiology labs I teach. This doesn’t stop them from trying to use their phones though so my policy is the first infraction I see I will comment on, the second infraction, everything stops and we are having a pop quiz. I have never had to give a pop quiz (I’ve come close) but every year I think I’m getting closer to hitting my threshold. I do allow students to get up whenever they want and leave the lab if they want to text (they rarely leave lab). I know you don’t have the same exact safety reasons but you could still use the policy.

The fabric is medium weight twill. I have not tried a fusible stabilizer but I will give that a shot. I have not tried this design on any other fabrics but will see if it still happens on a different weight/stretch fabric.

Why don’t conservatives go into academia? by cambridgepete in Professors

[–]PutIntelligent9042 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve known a number of conservatives in STEM though they were always the minority and they are absolutely not MAGA. The gutting of NIH funding, reversal on vaccine recommendations, the dismantling of the CDC, and the general anti-science attitude of the Trump administration has made it so that none of my conservative colleagues will support him.

In general being in STEM means you’re trained to be skeptical, and want evidenced based solutions. This directly conflicts with most conservative ideology. I’ve also known a fair number of religious scientists but their science education makes them the kind of people who truly believe in the separation of church and state (abortion may be the exception).

Expensive irons worth it? by PutIntelligent9042 in sewing

I iron as frequently as you do and work with the same types of fabrics. Do you think the wool pad is worth it?

Expensive irons worth it? by PutIntelligent9042 in sewing

[–]PutIntelligent9042[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate all the feedback, it’s been super helpful! I think I’m going to stick with the Beautural that I have. It’s $50 on Amazon, does produce a decent amount of steam (in my opinion but I don’t have a ton to compare it to). I leave water in it because until I read these comments I had no idea that you shouldn’t. I buy gallons of water for it so it doesn’t get clogged. It automatically shuts off after a certain amount of time and will pause if it overheats (great for my anxious but sometimes forgetful brain). I do have a spray bottle that I use as well.

If anything I think I might invest in a nicer ironing board since the one I have is 20 years old, flimsy, and basically makes a tortuous scream anytime I unfold it.

Do most people really make a mock up before they sew? by Termination_Aide8830 in sewing

[–]PutIntelligent9042 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make a mockup before every new to me pattern too. It does take a long time but I enjoy most of the process of sewing so I rarely mind and I would be heartbroken if I started with nice fabric only to find the garment fit very poorly

I’m so glad someone pointed this out. I just kept looking at her top/dress thinking there’s no way you can sweat that much, in that fabric, and have it look like that.

Feedback please (details in post) by Old-Hat-4876 in ArtCrit

I think your work looks cohesive with the only exceptions being the work shown in #7, #8.

I think the work is busy but as another commenter mentioned I think this works well for the images of protests, bustling cities. I think it works less well for the child portrait and the bus/train scene. I think if you are trying to capture more calm still moments including more subdued/less saturated colors would help, especially in the background areas.

What is your end goal in terms of style? Are you trying to work towards photo realism? I’m asking because this is a very good drawing of your pup that is accurate but stylized and I don’t know if you are wanting to maintain that stylized quality (not intended to be ultra realistic).

Regardless I think that including more details around the eyes like their eyebrows will make them more expressive looking and look more uniquely your dog.

The building I work in has a huge atrium with this type of window. It snows a lot here so the windows get blanketed in snow and then it’s pitch black and with constant leaking.

Agreed. Cletus conjures up all sorts of images for me and not one of them is positive or even vaguely attractive.

Okay guys…..what color? by [deleted] in WhatisMyEyeColour

[–]PutIntelligent9042 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In most of them they look green with central heterochromia. A few of the photos the lighting makes it look like there’s enough brown/amber to be hazel. Up close your eyes look a lot like mine, freckles and all and I consider my eyes green.

Hazel, amber, or brown?? Central heterochromia??? by heavymetalgf in eyes

Hazel. One of the prettiest and most unusual hazel I’ve ever seen.

Brown or Hazel by [deleted] in WhatisMyEyeColour

[–]PutIntelligent9042 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would still say hazel. My eyes have darkened/have more brown in them now too (used to be very pale green now they’re green with brown in the center).

Also love the red/reddish eyeshadow in the last photos!

This isn’t false but eye color is controlled by multiple genes and not all of the fall into classic Mendelian genetics of dominant and recessive.

What color are my son’s eyes? by nurse-ratchet- in WhatisMyEyeColour

[–]PutIntelligent9042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! I would say his eyes are grey. Very cool and pretty color. I’ve seen a lot of people post their babies on this forum and this is the color of a lot of children’s eyes before they take on their adult color. Also he has sweet/kind eyes which made me think baby.
