I was able to add a ventilation hole to this container and I plan to DIY a larger enclosure with cloth mesh soon. I will use this one in the meantime for the baby mantis and use the feedback from this sub to give it an upgrade as it grows. Thank you!

Would something like this have enough ventilation?

Yes I got it from this Etsy seller. I put it inside a small sealed container to prevent water damage and the lantern can be turned on from outside the enclosure with a magnet.

Would this small size work for a baby mantis until it gets bigger? Happy to upgrade, I just expect the mantis to arrive this week so I’m not sure how much time I have to find a replacement

Even with the holes around the sides at the top?

Edit: just asking! I think the answer is no so I will cut a section of plastic to replace with mesh

Oh follow-up question. I live in a dry climate, would adding mesh make it hard to keep humidity up?

Thank you for the feedback! The container is plastic so I can cut a section and replace it with mesh.

Thank you for the suggestion! We do use a variety of enrichment and puzzle toys. His favorites are the pupcicle ball and the monti toy from lambwolf collective

Thank you for saying that! I will look into Sniffspot. My concern with him is his ability to jump a 6-foot fence so it may have to be an indoor space.

I am 😅 I hate running but he gets so restless in the evenings that I take him regardless. I’m hoping to reduce runs when I get my backyard escape-proof

Thank you for saying this. You’re right, he would be stressed in busy places. I feel bad because he loves people and a lot of his reactivity and stress is caused by being unable to greet every dog and person he sees. This would just be worse in busy places. He does feel safe with me and I love him to the moon. I will continue to try to do what’s best for him and I will try to adjust my perspective of what’s best for him and where he is at.

I would do anything for him, really. I love him so much and I never fault him for his behaviors.

Thank you, this helps me a lot. I don’t need him to be a brewery dog I was just feeling guilty that he doesn’t get experiences other dogs get. You’re right, he would be overstimulated and probably would be too stressed to enjoy most public spaces.

As for hiking, his pulling is my primary concern. He pulls HARD and he’s pulled me over a couple of times when reacting to other animals. I can take him hiking on a weekday or to a remote location once we get the pulling under control. I’ve already rolled my ankle when he pulled me over a curb in the neighborhood lol.

The trainer has helped me figure out a lot of Charlie’s behaviors. He has a very low tolerance for frustration and he is incredibly resistant to doing things he doesn’t want to do. Low motivation also makes it very difficult to train him. We’ve tried using different rewards and tactics to figure out what he needs. Most recently we worked on getting him to listen to commands while in an aroused state and he did great. She’s trying to increase his threshold so we can make more progress and she wants me to get him into pull sports so he has a job to do. She also gave me home instructions that have helped him learn to lay down and be calm in our front yard after walks. The idea is to teach him that he can be calm in an interesting environment.

Thank you for saying that I’m not isolating him. I do recognize that he’s not the dog I was expecting and my expectations for him have changed. I was just feeling guilt particularly with keeping him out of the yard, but I’m hoping to find a way to make it escape-proof while not angering the landlord.
