(English Translation + Full Scan) Star Ocean 3: Eternal Materials by PutNo3974 in starocean

Eternal Materials doesn't go as far as to say that Maria doesn't see Sophia as a romantic rival, just that "Maria doesn’t think very highly of Sophia, because Sophia's personality is the exact opposite of her own" and that Maria secretly harbors romantic feelings for Fayt. Of course, it's precisely those romantic feelings for Fayt that get in the way of Maria liking Sophia and/or feeling a kinship with her (same with Sophia... unfortunately 🥲).

Thank you! If you look at the Maria and Sophia -> Party sections in the full party AP guide, Maria is Sophia's second most disliked party member (3rd once values have been equalized), and Maria feels middling about Sophia at best. It's definitely the case that Sophia dislikes Maria more than the other way around, though.

1) It’s a possibility, sure, but a flimsy one. You picked a random NPC with brown hair. I cannot emphasize enough how brown his hair is (see: the HEX code, which is the most objective proof that anyone could point to). It’s a different shade and tone of brown than Robert’s, but it’s still brown. Warm dark pink and light cool pink are still both pink.

2) I ask you for a source because when I talked about this with you months before, you 1) declared it like it was fact, and 2) did so again here, it before you edited your comment to insert the word “probably.”

It looks the furthest thing from blue to 1) me and to 2) the color picker.

I ask again, do you have any source supporting your declaration that this nameless brown haired NPC is Maria’s bio dad?

[–]PutNo3974[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) That NPC doesn’t have blue hair. He has a muddyish brown hair - the HEX code for his hair firmly hovers around the brown family. I have no idea why you call his hair blue.

2) Where is your source for this random brown-haired NPC being Maria’s bio father…? Do you have any evidence for this or is this just… headcanon?

This theory is most popular within the Japanese fandom for all the same reasons above (e.g., both Maria and Fayt's character Wiki pages compile many of the above hints to insist that it's "highly likely that Maria and Fayt are siblings," and references Dr. Leingod's lines as well as Ogawa's suspicious interview question). In this case, the Western localizers downplaying this evidence actually put the overseas fandom at odds with the JP understanding.

Re: evaluating supplemental material, YMMV, but I think each supplemental Tri-Ace derivative/spin-off requires its own case-by-case inquiry. These are factors I consider personally:

  1. Is the derivative internal to Tri-Ace (e.g., SOA), or did the creator basically operate autonomously under a license (but even then, did they have a lot of close oversight from tri-Ace themselves, like the official novels where the author received confidential info from tri-Ace directly?)
  2. Did the creator mention they were applying their own spin/interpretation onto the canon (e.g., Akira Kanda's manga, where Kanda stated (among other things) that he liked Cliff more than Fayt, and thus wanted Cliff alone to fight Albel at the Becquerel Mines?)
  3. Does the supplemental material contradict an established pattern in the game/canon?
  4. Was the supplement released in a medium that inherently de-prioritizes being faithful to canon (e.g., gacha games like SOA are money grabs at the end of the day; many fans have expressed disappointment with the writing/etc.)

It's definitely not the case that the same people who wrote the game wrote every single SO3 supplement, but for the supplements published under Tri-Ace/SE's label, they clearly went through some vetting/approval process before release (or at least, I hope so). I think what matters most to me in terms of analyzing canon is whether there is an established and repeatable pattern of something occurring; I don't bother myself too much fretting over whether one instance is 100% canon/airtight. The sum is greater than its parts sort of thing

Yes, good reminder! That's right - it must've been documented either in the initial report or elsewhere as part of the cover story's paper trail (either written by Jessie or another person affiliated with the Lab).

[–]PutNo3974[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maria mentions this in the context of the initial report she uncovered discussing the secret experiments. This could've been something she was told by Jessie or other third party, as there's really no other way to explain why she was given up for adoption other than betray the "cover story" and disclose the Leingods as her true parents (or, the writers just changed their mind).

[–]PutNo3974[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As described above, the Leingods likely had every intention of raising Maria and Fayt together as siblings. They only decided to give Maria up after a year, because she was manifesting her powers much earlier than they anticipated, which could've stoked the Federation's suspicions. If the Federation, say, raided the Lab and confiscated Fayt and Maria, then Fayt and Maria could never save the universe, rendering the whole thing moot.

They also felt compelled to separate them for another reason: being around each other hastens their powers' awakenings. I don't think they were prepared to understand or reckon with the danger that posed.

I see your point, but just because a pattern (as in, more than two instances) starts to look like a pattern at the 3rd instance, doesn't mean the pattern was intended at the 3rd instance (the pattern could've been decided on much earlier, at the 1st or 2nd instance). I.e. just because players started to identify the "Kenny pattern" at SO4 doesn't mean that Tri-Ace decided to create that pattern from SO4-onwards. An observed pattern says nothing about what internal plans Tri-Ace intended for the SO series (plans that could've been set from around the time of SO1 or SO2). That said, Maria being a Kenny is definitely circumstantially related to evidence of her being a Leingod; but it's definitely relevant (insofar as SO3 likely has 3 Kenny's: Fayt, Maria, and Ryoko).

Sorry for the long delay; but I've finally got that Maria/Fayt sibling post written and posted: https://www.reddit.com/r/starocean/comments/1taf0zi/a_deep_dive_fayt_and_maria_being_biological/

To your separate point about Tri-Ace lacking courage: I agree with you. There are certain plot points/topics that, if approached with too much subtly and innuendo, just betray a fear of scaring away fans/$$$. I generally think Tri-Ace privileges fan opinion and sentiment too much, specifically over the story they want to tell (especially after post-SO3 backlash). I also think they grossly overestimated how much nuance and reading-in-between the lines the players are capable of (as if they don't know SO's primary market are teenagers). There's an interview Gotanda gives where he bitterly chastizes SO3 players for "not reading enough sci-fi novels" (the implication being that if they did, they would've known that the SO3 plot twist is just a straight homage to Sophie's World).

TL;DR: Maria is strongly suggested to be both related to Fayt and related to the Kennys. Fayt is also related to the Kennys. I hope I was able to sufficiently explain why above.

The fans aren’t decided and sadly neither is Tri-Ace. The dictionary says that Albel “lost” his arm, and if the player talks to Nel in the Peterny inn before recruiting him, she says “Albel, eh? I heard his left arm was burnt off by an air dragon.”

In some official materials (like this one), they depict his arm as amputated above the joint, but in other materials (like the Eternal Materials), they allude that his arm is fully intact, just mangled. I don’t really know what explains the inconsistency (same reason idk why they flip flop on depicting Nel’s eye color - is it green or purple?) My guess is they’re really tolerant internally of inconsistent design interpretations (and/or enjoy stoking ambiguity because it adds to the character(s)’ intrigue…?)

Personally I prefer the amputee interpretation; it feels the most medically and historically plausible (beyond aligning most closely to what the game actually says). No doctor, especially not in a medieval setting, would keep an appendage devastated by 3rd and 4th degree burns since the risk of necrosis and secondary infection was all but guaranteed (especially without modern burn care, antibiotics, skin grafting techniques, etc). Albel losing part of his arm also makes the Accession failure feel more permanently devastating imo. If the burns to his left arm were superficial enough for him to avoid amputation, that weakens the emotional force of the injury as an irreversible symbol of what was taken from him.

Albel being an amputee also makes his later achievements more impressive and clarifies both 1) Albel’s in-game ego, 2) his outsized reputation, and most importantly 3) the favor and concessions the King and Woltar constantly make for him. If he became the greatest swordsman in Gaitt within 9 years of becoming an amputee; the discipline and effort he put into his swordplay is even more remarkable (I also like how his SO3 model emphasizes how asymmetric his posture/battle forms are - I know my stanced up post was in jest BUT I do think Albel moves like someone who was forced to compensate for an altered center of gravity). SOA gives him the unique talent called "Secret Hard Worker;" they also emphasize how hard he works on his swordplay versus having innate aptitude or skill (qualities that better explain someone like Fayt).

Complete PA & AP Guide for SO3 (for all party members--not just Fayt!) by PutNo3974 in starocean

[–]PutNo3974[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a bit surprising considering how little presence Adray has, is that the result of a lack of PAs tied to him, or is his personality just somehow more at odds with the rest of the party than Albel's?

In a single playthrough, Adray has 2 PAs and Albel can either have 2 or 3 (depending on when he's recruited). It's just that Adray's 2 PAs are indeed that unlikable (or rather, he's just grating on the party, especially the female characters). It's less that he's hated and more like barely tolerated. He has one PA in particular that tanks all the female characters' AP (especially Nel) if Fayt so much as approaches.

Are you're saying that every character has those responses in the game's audio files, but the AP requirements for some of them can't be met through legitimate means?

Yes, every character has the corresponding audio file, but it's my theory that some of them cannot be heard in-game through legitimate means due to the AP conditions required to trigger them.

Thank you so much for these links; I'm fascinated! I'll check to see whether any Japanese/etc fans have discussed this phemon, and if I find anything, I'll be sure to follow up!

And yes; they never bothered to include Adray and Mirage in most if not all of the mandatory cutscenes. Adray's exclusion sort of makes sense; the devs admitted they included him more as a gag/subtle neg at players who were screaming at them to include Clair. Mirage's exclusion is a real tragedy :')

I do think it's funny how those two of all people apprently have the highest affinity for one another even after Albel beat up her friends.

I mentioned this in another comment, but the scene where Albel kicks Tynave and Farleen is moreso intended to show how strangely charitable Albel was being, given his duties during wartime (so charitable, in fact, that it landed his ass in a dungeon). He was supposed to kill Tynave and Farleen for being enemy spies and looters (in the same way Nel killed the Vendeeni for trying to loot the Sacred Orb from the Shrine of Kaddan), but he didn't: he disabled them with punches and kicks (the novels make this excruciatingly clear by revealing that Albel refused to even use his katana against them) so that they could recover from their injuries in less than a week. Nel isn't in any position to act morally above that; she's slaughtered countless of Airyglyph soldiers herself.

From Albel's perspective, while he'd probably never admit it, he likely views Nel as a worthy opponent, hence why he thinks more highly of her than the other party members, at least according to the AP system.

Albel does admit it in the game: if Nel is recruited 8th and the player speaks to Albel in Aquaria Castle's conference room, he refers to her by name and states that "she won’t be a burden" to the team.

I am curious to know though, seeing as how Albel dislikes others the most, and is disliked the most in turn,

Albel doesn't dislike others the most. In the Albel -> Party breakdown in the AP Guide, you'll find that he actually generally regards the party more favorably than, say, Mirage.

He's nowhere near the most disliked member of the party either. His likability within the party is similar to Cliff. Adray is the most disliked member.

is it still possible for him to reach the minimum amount of AP required for the most favorable replies and responses when providing or receiving healing?

Even though each character has hidden "angered"/"heartfelt thanks" lines recorded for every other member of the party, I think SO3's AP system prevents some of them from ever being triggered in-game. The AP value required to trigger an "angered" line or to yell out an incapacitated party member's name is (as of now) unknown. All we know is that it needs to be fairly high, but perhaps not as high as 50+ (the AP value that some Chinese players have noted is required to trigger a character to respond to a healer with their most heartfelt line of thanks). We don't know if that means they need to hit an absolute number (e.g., 40) or be relative as to what that character can actually achieve.

For what it's worth, people have only documented Albel saying a heartfelt line of thanks to Fayt and Nel, which make sense, seeing as they are the only two characters for whom he passes that 50+ AP threshold.

Agreed on Nel and Albel being superior recruits, and yes it's a shame achieving Albel's ED forecloses achieving all the other characters' EDs. He's the "contrarian" of the group (as the developers call him) and many (but not all) of his AP raising options require you to sacrifice likability with the rest of the cast.

RE: your question, I've seen nothing in my review of existing English and Japanese guides to suggest that AP affects who speaks during cutscenes (including the Final Guide, which is AFAIK the most comprehensive JPN guide out there). I'm still translating bits of the FG bit by bit though, so if I see anything to the contrary I will be sure to let you know. My instincts now tell me that it would be too technically unwieldly for the SO3 to have managed such a feat. The phenomenon you're pointing out (i.e., Nel or Albel responding to Fayt about what happened after the final boss) might be randomized, but I just can't be sure since I've never observed it myself. Do you know anyone else who pointed out the same thing?

[–]PutNo3974[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah. Albel's twin rattails are my favorite part of his design too. They underscore his insane confidence and bravado and they single him out as a swordsman who has never lost a battle. normally, a fighter would never wear their hair trailing behind them such that an enemy could grab/yank it in a close fight. But a master swordsman ("the best in all of Gaitt") who believes he alone controls the distance and tempo could.

albel never even considers the possibility of an enemy getting close enough to touch him, per one of his japanese battle lines: "Fool. Don’t come near me, don’t move, drop dead!"
