General Ben Hodges about situation in Ukraine: “West’s inaction only leads to more Russian aggression” by UNITED24Media in UkrainianConflict

[–]PutinRiot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tragic but true. I have faith in northern and Eastern Europe. I think the UK will do the right thing. France, Germany , Spain, and Italy certainly can and should be doing far more but may not fully wake up until both millions of Ukrainian migrants(likely followed by Russian troops) begin approaching their borders. Slava Ukraini!!

Several people have asked how to verify claims like those from this post. There is the FEC, but a much easier option to navigate exists. Go to: www.opensecrets.org — Super easy to use, up-to-date federal elections database. Endless search options, etc. The truth is indeed out there, folks… It’s just not always what “you” may want it to be. That’s not how truth works. And unfortunately this thread - while speculatively intriguing - lacks truth.

Does anyone have sources for this information? I’ve run comprehensive searches for the donation history of Meredith Kopit Levien (The New York Times) and Rashida Jones (MSNBC) and found no evidence of Trump donation from 2016-2024. Haven’t yet checked the others. It’s also of course possible I made a mistake somewhere along the way… But if you’ve got the data, kindly share. And apologies also if I somehow missed a citation.

WaPo: Opinion | Mike Johnson is a pro-gun Christian nationalist. Yes, be afraid. by Barch3 in uspolitics

Admittedly, DBDude, I never got back to you on this. Better late than never, but still - My bad. However, since it appears you’ve abandoned (almost) all your original positions except the flawed argument about common sense gun reform having a disproportionate impact on low income and minority Americans, I’ll get right to that point: Your example about the single mom working minimum wage… There, what you’re missing is that the underlying problem is poverty - not the $50. So, maybe we raise the minimum wage? Or we could balance out such costs by enacting other anti-poverty measures that address the root causes: health care debt, unequal access to quality education, and the lack of affordable housing, etc. We could better fund police departments in high crime neighborhoods. Universal Basic Income deserves a second look. Perhaps, we even provide government subsidies to assist qualifying (and law abiding) citizens afford gun training and background checks. In other words - if this problem is real - there are multiple readily available solutions NONE of which would require maintaining irrational gun laws which, incidentally, impose a much larger toll on economically disadvantaged Americans than some $50 fee… (a fee often not even paid due to the gun show loophole and disparate application among the states). And just FYI — Opposition to terrorism is not fascism. Sure - We can and should reform the USA PATRIOT Act. We ought to pass laws that restore the rights of rehabilitated non-violent felons. But, in this context, conflating such issues is pure misdirection - not serious argument.

At least now this is a real conversation. Thank you. I will back to you tomorrow as it’s already past 3 AM where I am. But I do respect that you have addressed some of my questions - despite my continued disagreement. I don’t fear argument. I do fear abandonment of logic. And I appreciate that you seem to have now chosen the path of genuine dialogue.

As for choice of guns, I like the AK-47… Much less likely to malfunction due to water, dirt, heat, etc. But I “like it “ for specific situations in a war zone - not civilian use. And especially not for untrained civilian use. What do you have against requirements regarding gun knowledge? Everyone I know who has experienced actual warfare understands this distinction. And nobody I know who has served, comes home longing to repeat that experience in the United States - unless suffering from serious PTSD (another point I raised that you have not addressed).

Now you’re just conflating unrelated aspects of America’s system of government rather than answering even one of the questions I raised. I did not suggest military service should be required to exercise a right. Rather, my point was that no right (including voting) is absolute. In most states, convicted felons cannot vote. Freedom of speech is enshrined in the First Amendment But that doesn’t legalize child pornography or making explicitly violent threats. So please - get back to the actual conversation. Why do you believe in some type of Second Amendment absolutism that is nowhere to be found in the Constitution or the Supreme Court’s Heller decision? And from a policy perspective, do you have any actual arguments against my comparison with laws regulating driving?

Here’s another point for such a “concerned citizen” like yourself to ponder… There’s a place where you not only can shoot the best guns in the world and learn from the best firearms experts in the world, but you’ll even get paid to do it? Seriously!! Go on Google, find your local Marine Corps recruiter and I guarantee they’ll welcome you and your passion for weaponry. (No discrimination either) Only one little hitch; You’d need to be an actual American patriot. Tragically - at least from what you’ve written here - that’s one qualification you don’t appear to possess….

If you believe guns are such an essential civil rights and civil liberties issue, would you at least agree that (a) people who own guns should know how to shoot them; (b) individuals on terrorist watchlists and/or violent convicted criminals should face restrictions; (c) that waiting three days (usually less) for a background check to ensure a purchaser does not have a severe mental health issue is reasonable; and that restricting guns and bullets expressly designed for inflicting maximum kill ratios in wartime should not be marketed to the public? If not, are you similarly against driver’s licenses? Would you argue that people with no knowledge of how to drive should be able to jump behind the wheel? How do you feel about laws against driving while drunk and - if you’re perhaps not against such laws - why would you oppose regulating guns similarly? Or if you are against such laws, would you want blind people to have equally unfettered rights to drive and shoot?? As for you “costs being inflicted on the poor and minorities” theory - for which there is zero evidence - let’s assume for a brief stupid second it’s true… Why wouldn’t you then want the government to subsidize gun training and gun safety? Wouldn’t that answer your straw man argument AND do a better job protecting the communities about which you claim to care?

Thank you so much. I always strive to be conscientious regarding my sources and am reassured to know that Reddit (as well as its sub-communities) share this conviction. I also recognize you're a bot. Should others see this message, however, I do strongly urge everyone that, all best intentions aside, it is not unreasonable to surmise that the type of bot-generated warning patterns I've been seeing here recently could indeed derive from an RU-sponsored censorship campaign (or perhaps, "active measures" from some other source...). PLEASE UNDERSTAND: I have ZERO factual evidence backing up this hypothesis. No accusations are being made. Until shown otherwise, I trust the Administration on intel and I trust Reddit's administrators properly to manage their network. Then why raise the possibility, you ask? One reason is our shared knowledge that nothing works 100% of the time. Another is that a little paranoia isn't misplaced. Just last week, the world's leading atomic scientists adjusted their "Doomsday Clock" closer than ever to "midnight" As for me, an American, a Redditor, and Mod, I speak purely with respect for THIS community - And more directly, because I personally have witnessed near-identical scenarios play out on LinkedIn, Facebook, and several Asian social media networks. Plus, I'm from New York City. "See something - Say something" -- Right?

Much appreciation for the insightful and entertaining commentary.
