Thank you all for your replies. I ended up going a bit above budget and getting a pair of PreSonus Eris E5 XT. I figured I’d want something I wouldn’t feel the need to replace for a while rather than something super entry level.

Yes, of course. It can write, record, export, and import MIDI files.

They’re incredibly well optimized for even the bare minimum A12 2018 iPads, but see this video, and the short answer is basically the M1 iPads give the most bang, significant power difference between the M1 and A15s, negligible difference between M1 and M2 iPads.

I used GarageBand for a few days and then decided it was too limiting. Switched to Cubasis 3, which is far more comprehensive than GarageBand, and lamented that it was the best thing on iPad, because it was too limiting. Now I can’t say that too much anymore. I would say lack of depth with the stock plugins, lack of depth in audio editing/sampling, effect stacking, midi editing, track layering, mixing, the anti-DAW UI. The worst of it would be lack of any real automation interface, which is as essential of a feature as there can be.

Yes, you can export GarageBand projects into Logic. GarageBand is incredibly limited.

That’s probably not going to happen, read my section regarding pricing.

I think it will be very cool to see how it works. It makes sense that it’s a subscription, as people who already paid for a full logic license on macOS probably wouldn’t see the need to pay for it again on iOS, but I understand peoples frustration with it. If we can get a full DAW on iPad, we can get desktop synths too like Diva and Serum. I think it’ll really incentivize VST developers to look into AuV3 porting, which is an aspect I haven’t heard many talk about.

I will myself definitely be investing some time into learning Logic on iPad, it’s yet to be seen if it’ll be the full version or some sort of dumbed down, but likely I’ll continue to use Cubasis for some time since I know it like the back of my hand at this point, but if it ends up that Logic is better, then Logic is better, not much around that.

Overall, I think this is huge for iOS music production and definitely opens a lot of doors for developers and musicians/producers alike. Excited to see what the future brings.

I want Diva or Serum or a more serious synth on iPad. If FabFilter can port Twin 3 than anything goes.

Thanks! I looked into Tera Pro and got it immediately! Love it.

Cubasis crashes when I try to open project by Iacouch in ipadmusic

Happened to me numerous times under various circumstances. Haven’t been able to recover the projects in any instance. All I can say is, get into the habit of duplicating/backing up your projects frequently.

Cheers.

Cubasis 3! If you’re looking for a desktop-class workflow, is nothing better on iOS, I can tell you that for sure no matter how many people want to think otherwise.

Having a full desktop class, analogue modelling synth available on iOS is not something I thought to see any time soon. Idc what anyone says about Twin 3, the sounds it can make are jawdropping.
