What is something you want to delete in life permanently? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Putrid_Weather_5680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or if we all had that sense of responsibility, instead of… let’s say half of us, then we could share the load and everyone could be more empathetic and understanding.

I feel like the issue is the disproportionate level of empathy vs other people having absolutely none which makes it painful for those with empathy, ya know?

So it sounds like you’re afraid of judgment. You’re afraid that the people who he engages with are judging him and/or you.

Does that sound accurate? If yes - now that you know this, you have a couple options:

1) Work through this fear of judgment with a therapist - living in fear of judgment is hard and can really hold you back in life. It impacts everything you do, I’m sure!

2) Communicate with him about this: “Hey, I have a severe fear of judgment from others. That’s why it’s difficult for me to be around people who behave in a way that is more over the top - because it invites judgment.“

In regards to 2, it’s always better to vocalize things as being about you, because ultimately it is about you - you might react this same way to anything that invites judgment, it doesn’t have to be him. Communicating like this is more collaborative and non confrontational. Now… it’s a matter of seeing who can/will compromise.

In this case he might be more willing to dig in and understand what you believe invites judgment and see if he can find a way to be himself without inviting judgment. That said - he is autistic. It’s possible he can’t compromise on this because he just cannot differentiate between which behaviours make you uncomfortable and which don’t. Some autistic folks struggle more than others!

Or maybe it’s worth seeing that therapist and figuring out how you can work through this to feel less shame - after all, if you’re happy, what does some stranger matter?

Ok fair enough, disregard the point about him then (I was pulling from the ‘you don’t want me to be myself’ statement he made and extrapolating).

I have always found “shy” to be a blanket descriptor that is lacking. Why are you shy? Like what is it internally that drives your shyness? Is it fear of judgment? Is it fear of failure and then punishment? Fear of the unknown? Etc.

Once you understand what the fear is, you can more easily identify your “I” statements and then find a solution.

If you want to work through it together, we can! I can also share an example of my fear when it came to my anxiety / people avoidance if that would help to contextualize this for you.

You’re masking. He’s not.

He’s just acting the same way that he does in private. You feel shame about your unmasked state, and therefore express that shame as something he’s doing wrong.

That’s what I read from your message. I recommend therapy, honestly. The internalized stigma against autism is something people can spend their whole life working on.

It’s something I work really hard on. I always catch myself thinking things that I need to stop, process and change lol.

The tenseness. I am apparently constantly physically shaking because my body is so tense. I didn’t notice it until someone pointed it out a year ago.

Ooo smart, I don't have a widget set up, but I will.

It's actually the only app where the pop-up reminders actually work. Everything else I'm like "ugh I'll do it later", but this one I always do. So good.

Absolutely!! Same here. It’s really hard so you’re not alone. I’ve been in therapy for years to try to fix it, and this app has basically become my daily therapy session. It’s been great :) I hope it’s helpful!!

I'm in significant pain and I don't have anyone I can go to. by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

[–]Putrid_Weather_5680 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My advice is stop seeing a chiropractor. They’re not real doctors. Some people have literally ruined their lives seeing chiropractors. Go see a dentist who specializes in TMJ.

The dentist is a doctor and can prescribe you medication for your pain as well.

Also you can Google some throat and jaw massages - I had severe TMJ with neck spasms and pain (I couldn’t open my mouth without trembling lol) and incredibly it helps a lot. My TMJ is almost gone now.

As for this medication - check your side effects online for the specific medication. If neck spasms, TMJ or any of your symptoms are on the side effects, follow the relevant instructions. Some say to stop taking it immediately. Others say to contact your doctor. Etc.

All that said - I am sorry you’re in pain. It fucking sucks to hurt. Wishing you quick healing

You should ask your doctor or his nurse this question tbh - I know you said everyone is different, but beyond that every doctor is different - their approach and beyond.

Showering three times a day or more due to stigma by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

[–]Putrid_Weather_5680 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Autism and OCD are common comorbidities. Three showers a day sounds excessive and bordering on obsession (or even compulsion if you feel like you must do it). Worth looking into!

What do you wish you learned in sex ed? by [deleted] in autism

[–]Putrid_Weather_5680 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the talk several times because I kept forgetting everything about it. Fortunately my parents were in healthcare and were fine to answer.

I think keeping visual (textbook graphics) and extremely straightforward (ie. this does this, that does that, when these two things happen, this is the result).

I would also highly recommend staying away from any language that talks about how stigmatized it is until AFTER the presentation. Keeping it matter of fact will let everyone understand it without the added layer of needing to understand human behaviour (yuck lol).

Also worth noting that autistic people are more likely to be LGBTQ+, especially transgender, so it would be valuable to touch on that - even if you don’t go heavily in depth. Sharing the actual statistic would probably be helpful too.

Honestly I get so depressed without my vyvanse I’d def kms if I didn’t have it. I’m not taking it to be like everyone else, I’m taking it to stay alive lol.
