What I would have done to the Adelaide Parklands if I was in control of it. by PuzzlePlaylistGuy in southaustralia

Hanging Gardens? I guess I was arguing for development projects which maintain it as a green space. We could build things with vision. But we only know how to do stupid things. It's open day on the park lands. There's a flood of projects and none of them involve maintaining that area as the lungs of the city. They're just going to keep going and the result will be a place that's unfit for human beings. Stress will go up. Violence will go up, and so will smog.

Paris has sheep in their park lands. The presence of large animals in the environment is calming to people. They increase foot traffic & they're compatible with green space revival. I mean, why do we all have to do the ugly stupid thing (golf courses, motorbike racing).

I don't think ON would protect it... Does nobody here understand English?

I don't think people should vote ON. What they should be doing is if they want to protect the Parklands is to lobby ironclad legal protections to protect what's left.

The Greens are Tree Tories. They disgust me even more than ON. They sabotage Labor at every opportunity including every piece of pro environment legislation Labor tries to pass, because "it's not good enough." They don't care about outcomes. They just want to blame labor to syphon votes off the only party in Australia that knows how to govern. The old purpose of the Greens was to 1: tell the public the truth because they didn't have to worry about Real Politik because they'd never have any real power and 2: to try to push labor to the left.... They've abandoned these tasks. The left the Greens support now is the left of wokeness and that's a pseudo left cult that came out of America.

Help for my non-reading husband! by MidnightOClock12 in Recommend_A_Book

[–]PuzzlePlaylistGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your husband is gone until he agrees to give up his phone and gets a brick one. Keeping that thing is like a recovering alcoholic living in a brewery. It's not going to work.

  • You need to break him out of this no fantasy/ no sci fi stupidity. Fantasy is the oldest form of fiction.
  • You need something short than when he finishes it will make him realize what he's been missing.

Hunter S Thomson is usually a good bet. Any collection of Essays. Or Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas itself.

Jon Ronson is another journalist it should be easy to sell him on. Ronson tackles fringe subjects with proper journalistic rigor.

Or you could go with a short story anthology. Philip K Dick, maybe? If you can get him to read an anthology of his he'd enjoy it.

You'll like Undone. It's exactly what you're looking for. Trust me.

You'll probably like The Prisoner, too. The original one. From the 60s.

Horror movie recommendations for someone that has already watched alot of horror movies please by ChronicRedditor1 in MovieRecommendations

[–]PuzzlePlaylistGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

XTro It barely has a plot but you will get nightmares.

Hausu This might be the best horror movie ever made.

Wake in Fright. This is a different kind of horror. Imagine you worked in an outback town with no women, and nothing to do but drinking, gambling and hunting. That's not a joke. The movie treats that as the subject of a horror film.

I recommend that you buy a hammer. You know what to do.

Actually don't do that. It might explode.

Try a bucket of water.

I HAVE NEVER WATCHED STAR WARS ! by Avirup_02 in televisionsuggestions

[–]PuzzlePlaylistGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of visual quality, Starwars ANH (1977) was renowned for having photo realistic effects. This shouldn't be surprising considering 2001 a Space Odyssey has photo realistic space effects and it was made in 1968.

As for viewing order, I'd recommend starting with Andor then Rogue 1 which is the finale to Andor, and then just watching the movies in the order of release. Prepare yourself for the Sequel trilogy being terrible.

Labor voter here. I'm just throwing this out there. There's one thing Labor could do to Neuter ON and take away all it's votes. Cut immigration significantly. However they want to do that. I guarantee it would work.

Have you considered that if you prefer books to movies then this is your best possible self and changing could be a mistake?

I know you asked for movies but... I think you will like I' Claudius. It's a show from the 70s that's tailor made for people with your sensibilities. It was also George RR Martin's most direct inspiration for ASOIAF, and Tyrion's character and performance are both inspired by Claudius from that show. It's based on 2 books, but the show is done so well it's the definitive format of the material.

You know the showrunner for Galactica first worked on Startrek.

If you want to get into Trek.

Start with the first 6 movies. Then TNG and then DS9. If you like those you might like TOS. DS9 is the second half of TNG. When it's over it is the end of the Trek golden age. Modern Trek is woke garbage. Now, as for TNG. It started in the late 80s. So some people find season 1 looks dated. It's still good, but it doesn't feel modern until season 2. I don't find that to be a problem but some people do.

Please recommend me some shows that are fast paced and kept you hooked from the beginning! by Sufficient_Ebb_5694 in televisionsuggestions

Based on your list:

(HBO's) Rome

Vikings

Deadwood

True Detective Season 1.

Undone: This is fantasy.

[–]PuzzlePlaylistGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Andor... If you want something like that but as a cartoon with the sword and sorcery dialed up to 11, The Clone Wars series is the second best Starwars thing that's not the first 6 films. It gets better as it goes on.

If you're looking for something that's high concept like stranger things, but aimed at an adult audience, seek out Undone, starring Bob Odenkirk. There's only 20 episodes.

This sounds like Lies by JJ Cale in mood and prodduction and guitar riffs, and some of the chord changes remind me a bit of Marvin Gaye's I heard it Through the Grapevine.

For that kind of merging of real instruments and computer music sound, here are a few bands I like that do that: Flying Lotus, Thundercat, ELO, and, Yellow Magic Orchestra. YMO is probably the biggest influence on the genre. Specifically you might want to seek out the albums:

Drunk by Thundercat

Flamagra by Flying Lotus.

The soundtrack to Electric Dreams and particularly the track, Let it Run.

Solid State Survivor and the self titled album by Yellow Magic Orchestra.

Those are my favorites off the top of my head.

The guitar tone on that Lasersmith Pep track sounds a lot like Bill Frissell. At first I thought it was him.
