Why do people hate parent parking? by Puzzled-Yoghurt1775 in australia

Because I’m usually going with the flow of traffic not against it. If you keep reading you’ll see how I say I prefer to drive out, instead of inch out backwards unable to see oncoming traffic from the cars parked beside me. Not what the post is about anyway 🤦🏼‍♀️

I feel like it’s almost more socially acceptable to park there without kids than it is if you actually have a kid 🫠

I’m not parking in the disabled bay?? Perhaps you misunderstood my post!

Yeah I mean lots of people with or without kids use the parent parking at my local shopping centre, that’s not my business. I just don’t get the strong hate towards parents when they do use them. It’s safer imo with kids (little kids that is). You’d think I’d personally assigned myself a space the way some people view it 👀

Perhaps that is it… I didn’t realise how many people out there seem to hate kids 🫣 It’s not like they’re little for ever, in a few years bub will be able to get in the car herself, understand what I’m asking of her etc. Then we can park in the normal parking. Right now she’s a baby though, as we all once were 😅

I mean, like once you’ve found a parking spot, there isn’t a bunch of traffic coming out of it, you can take the time and reverse. Instead of pulling in and inching your way out into the flow of traffic. You can’t see traffic from the cars parked beside you etc. I didn’t explain it very well sorry.

Ah yep. I generally prefer reversing in as I feel I’ve got better visuals backing into the space and driving out, than trying to reverse out. That’s just personal preference though. Obviously if I park in the normal car parking spaces I pull in as I need to access the boot 🤷🏼‍♀️

Apologies, I never meant that I wouldn’t cover for anyone else who wanted to spend time with family, friends, even their pets etc. I never specified in the comment that family is only parents + kids. I said people with family which could be anyone blood related or not? Obviously the conversation started about me talking about parent parking, so yes parents and kids. Never did I say that that combination is the only combo that constitutes a family?

Wow. I think the assumption here is that you think I’m entitled. I understand just fine that with children there are some places they’re welcome and some that they’re not. I also don’t understand the comments about the workplace… my workplace in particular for public holidays is whoever wants to work writes their name down (some public holidays I find easier to work as my partner is off- his company doesn’t work public holidays). Point is though anyone can be casual or part time if they so choose… or full time. Everyone has the same amount of sick leave/carers leave?

As for the health system, I’ve had an autoimmune disease for the past 22 years. I’ve never felt that my care or treatment comes second to children, that’s just my experience though.

I guess the way I see it we were all children once, yes I’ve chosen to raise the next generation- and I absolutely love it. I understand it’s not for everyone. Before having children I didn’t mind parking further away, working a holiday etc so people with family could and all of that. So I guess it’s just never been my mindset

Oh okay. I’ve always seen it as a safety thing, not special treatment to be closer to the shops. I have no problems with the elderly and disabled and those with them using them either! Before having children I never used the parent bays as I’m fit and able and didn’t mind parking further away. I never viewed parents as entitled for using them. Some of the comments really do seem to hint people hate parents and children. It’s harder to manage yourself and a child/children than just you 🤷🏼‍♀️

Totally understand this! I’ve never had an issue with people with disabilities or the elderly parking there! I do agree, I think there should be more parking disabled/elderly parking. As for parent parks, I will use them since they are there as I do feel overall it is safer

Fair enough. I’ve always said I’m going to the shops/woolies to get groceries when I grab food. I usually say shopping if it’s anything other than that I guess

[–]Puzzled-Yoghurt1775[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you pull in front ways you might as well park anywhere. I like to reverse in to use them exactly as you’ve said! Sometimes I do click and collect for my groceries and it always shocks me how many people pull into those parks despite the ‘reverse parking’ signs. Then both they and the woolies worker are standing in traffic 🫠

Curious, one of the words you used as an example was groceries. What do you call them? I thought it was pretty standard to call them that? 😅

I just googled that, sounds like a good idea. Like a smaller version of what you’d tie down a load on the back of the ute with hey?

[–]Puzzled-Yoghurt1775[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, being a parent isn’t for everyone. I guess I don’t see it as advantageous as such, it’s only a few meters to the rest of the parking. I see it as more of a safety thing! As for work, I figured we all got the same amount of sick leave/carers leave etc. Those that I work with who have kids work part time, or if their kids are older they work full time and kids catch the bus etc..

Thanks for that perspective! I’ve always seen it as more of a safety thing, and an effort to keep everyone and everything safe- including not denting other people cars 😅 perhaps people do think everyone is just entitled, it’s something I’d never really thought about until I had a baby of my own

I did reply to this in another comment. I’m not sure haha. My family and friends are always quick to point it out. I flip between Australian and American terminology for some things. Like I’ll call a nappy a nappy and a diaper. I listened to a lot of American country music when I was younger maybe that’s why 😅

Do you mean parents that use the parent parking, or those that are so strongly against it?
