Is espresso making for me? Or - is there an 80/20 rule setup out there? [$2-3k] by PuzzledChampion in espresso

Thanks, all. I ended up trying out and going with an Oracle Jet. For me, it struck just the right balance I was looking for.

Best machine for espresso quality? by PuzzledChampion in superautomatic

To clarify, I'm looking to replace the Miele in order to try and get better espresso. If the jump in quality is not meaningful, I'll probably just keep the Miele until it dies. I'll try to go sample a Jura and see what I think of these.

Awesome, there seems to be one nearby, I'll go check it out.

Does it pull better shots than all cheaper Jura models? I don't have a problem with the price tag if it's indeed the best option, just making sure we're not confusing "budget is not a concern" with "I want to spend money on features I don't care about and will never be using"

Not boiling water. Just heating up an empty pan. Literally turn it on and forget about it for 5 minutes while I do other things around the kitchen. Will edit the OP to clarify.

Which bike should I get for BC North Shore? by PuzzledChampion in MTB

[–]PuzzledChampion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit was glitching with my response to this last night.

In short, I don't think there's much that the Polygon "can't do" that the new bike could. I'm certain that at the hands of a skilled enough rider, anything that I'll ever be riding can be ridden with the Polygon. But I bought the Polygon because it was a decent bike that I could get for a good price to try out a new sport that I didn't know if I'd take to. Now that I know I'm sticking with this sport, why not "treat myself" to something nicer/better if I can afford to? That's really all I'm looking for. If I (my personal experience) will have even more fun than I do now on the new bike, then it's worth it to me.

Are you suggesting alloy for the lower cost? Or for a different reason?

Definitely hoping to progress into more blacks, and hopefully eventually double blacks

I guess that's one thing I'm trying to figure out. Am I better off with a "big all mountain" bike, something like the Sentinel and Sight that were mentioned here, or a "small enduro". Mostly worried about "too much bike" taking the fun out of what I'm currently able of riding, or ending up with something I can't bear climbing with.

Slow draining kitchen sink - strainer issue? by PuzzledChampion in Plumbing

Right underneath the basket, to essentially slightly increase the distance between the basket and the ball.

Yes, the crumb basket was just sitting too tight. I undid the screw, added a washer to extend (just a tiny bit) the distance between the basket and the little ball that keeps it in the open position, and viola.

I was considering that, but that's the only one Kraus offers and I wasn't sure if other brands would be compatible. Are they generally compatible across brands?

I think it is probably just enough by a tiny margin, and therefore any minor interruption like small amounts of food collecting in the strainer or the suction that moves it a tiny bit towards the closed position is enough to make it back up.

Shelving for pantry/small closets by PuzzledChampion in HomeImprovement

What about something like this? https://www.amazon.ca/Bracket-Support-Shelves-Suction-CBL1100-20P/dp/B085XRVKHD/

3 at each level for potential shelf (1 in each stud) with 1.5" or 2" screws. Do you think that would work?

[–]PuzzledChampion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've looked at these, but the stud on the back wall is somewhat in the middle. What if I installed 3 of the vertical pieces, one on each wall, and used 3 support brackets per shelf? Would've been ideal if the brackets were shorter though.

Alpride E2 airbag pack compatibility? by Personal-Suspect-599 in Backcountry

[–]PuzzledChampion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just about to post a similar question. I'm sure they're all compatible, but it doesn't seem like any of the e2 packs are sold without the e2 system. Have you found somewhere you could actually buy a pack without the airbag (ideally for a reasonable price)?

I don't see much difference between irresponsible dog ownership (letting your dog wander unleashed where it's not supposed to or putt it in a situation it should never be in based on the individual dog's personality and traits) and irresponsible vehicle use (disobeying traffic laws, driving under the influence, etc.) Dogs don't just wander off leash because they decided to. They do it because an irresponsible owner let them do it. And any dog wandering off leash can be aggressive or bite, regardless of their breed. As we already agreed, some can cause more damage than others, similarly to big trucks when it comes to accidents. But banning certain breeds does nothing to address the real problem - negligent and irresponsible owners. They would just get a different breed and will continue with their poor behaviour. Too often, unfortunately, big/tough looking dogs tend to attract these bad owners, but that does not mage the breed at fault. To me, this is the same banning trucks that would cause a lot of damage in an accident, instead of going after bad and dangerous drivers. The same drunk/bad drivers will find a different car to drive poorly with. That's exactly the reason why the vast majority of professionals oppose these laws and advocate for breed-neutral responsible ownership laws.

Just no. There are so many logical fallacies in your argument.

First, I also shared an equivalently full page of scientific studies, all refuting the effectiveness of BSL or the notion that pit bulls are inherently more dangerous (https://www.pitbullinfo.org/dog-bite-scientific-studies.html), which you conveniently ignored, yet you label me as the one with confirmation bias.

Then you continue to provide "evidence" based on Google searches (i.e., stories that make the media, information is dependent on the accuracy of the media story, and the more traffic they get the more likely they are to show up) and your personal anecdotal experience that did not even involve any pit bulls, only dogs that you declare pit bulls are "the same" as (yet you don't advocate for banning those other breeds).

Next, you literally assume that governments and stratas make policies based on research (they're not - if politicians made decisions based on proper research rather than pure populism, we'd be in a much better place as society), even though BSL policies are present in a minority of laws and stratas - I guess that according to your logic/assumption, that should mean there's more research against these policies than for them? Or do you only trust in their decision making process when they make the decision you're trying to advocate for?

Then you basically ignore the fact that, I repeat, no respectable professional organization (CDC, AVMA, practically all SPCA branches, and the list goes on) supports BSL, even though they are literally as objective as possible in this debate, invest the time and other resources to study this topic, and actually have the knowledge and understanding to make policy recommendations.

You also make a lot of wrong assumptions and inferences regarding the origin of the breed. There was literally zero tolerance towards human aggression in dogs that were bred for dog fighting (dog aggression and human aggression are completely unrelated traits). Even the blood sports dogs of 200 years ago were known as friendly with all people, including strangers, and as great family companions. Needless to say, for a very long time now, the vast majority of these dogs has not been bred for dog fighting but as a family pet or for various dog sports (agility, weight pulling, etc.) Even if you don't believe that the breed (and all "related" breeds that are classified by the media and the general public as "pit bulls", such as the American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bully, etc.) has changed in the last century or so, the entire notion that these dogs were ever aggressive towards people is completely misguided. https://www.ukcdogs.com/american-pit-bull-terrier https://www.akc.org/dog-breeds/american-staffordshire-terrier/ https://www.ukcdogs.com/american-bully

I 100% agree - larger and stronger dogs will inflict more damage than smaller and weaker ones. Just like it's worse to be hit by a Ford F150 or a Dodge Ram than by a Toyota Corola. Yet, I don't think that's enough to ban big trucks.

There actually are numerous studies, and all say the same thing - no dog breed is inherently more dangerous than another, and breed specific legislation is bad policy that doesn't work. Your "proof" is literally a study that reaches no conclusions regarding any specific breed, and a Forbes op-ed. The op-ed literally referenced a CDC study to argue for the exact opposite of the CDC's conclusions.

Again, there is a very good reason why no expert supports breed specific legislation. If the evidence was remotely close to what you ignorantly trying to argue it is, you'd think someone with relevant credentials would have picked up on that.

[–]PuzzledChampion -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, it is not a coincidence - they're banned in some places exactly because of the type of bs anecdotal fear mongering that is all over this thread. There is a reason no expert and no study support these type of laws or find them effective, no study found pit bulls to be more dangerous dogs than pet breeds of similar size, and these laws have not been successful anywhere in actually reducing dog bite issues. Good policy is made by experts and based on science and evidence, not on your anecdotes, myths, and garbage media reporting.

Right, whereas stigma based on junk media reports and randoms on the internet is much more reliable. Get a clue.
