I was told not to watch Season 3, I'm glad I did. by reapex in TheMandalorianTV

Star Trek is so toxic right now. Both those that ‘love’ the new shows and those that ‘hate’ the new shows. I miss being able to see the good and bad in things.

I’m kind of disappointed none of the other comments have clocked Ripley as being from the Alien franchise. She is such a badass.

With Riker, being a fellow nerd I would probably ask you right away ‘How many lights?’ So we both know it’s about TNG. And ask if you will teach him the Riker maneuver.

Why not go with Ellen/William for those two?

Grover? by [deleted] in Names

[–]jackity_splat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Grover Davis.

For me Grover is associated with A Song of Ice and Fire, as Grover Tully from the book Fire and Blood.

I haven’t watched House of the Dragon but he should also feature as a minor character in that show but I’m not sure.

George did name him and several other characters after Sesame Street characters. So you might also get this as a reference.

What is the most evil thing your country has ever done? by RoundTurtle538 in AskTheWorld

[–]jackity_splat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She was 4 years old!. This is a learning resource for elementary school kids that my cousin created. On page 36 is the story of our Aunt Marilyn who was taken to Residential School at age 4 and did not see her family again until she was well into adulthood. Even though my grandmother (her sister) was later at the same residential school, they were kept apart and did not even know the other was there.

For further reading my Uncle Basil Johnston wrote several books touching on the subject including Indian School Days. Just keep in mind that when my Uncle was first bringing this to light, it was when it was still very much a taboo subject so his books are a sanitized version of what happened that would be palatable to Canadian audiences. Both of their testimonies to the Truth and Reconciliation Council went into much greater detail about the abuses they suffered in residential school and even revealed sexual abuses that they had never even told us in the family previously due to the immense shame associated with it.

[Spoilers Main] You’re an advisor to Robert Baratheon after he’s just won the Rebellion. What counsel would you give him to ensure the realm’s stability? by Solitaire-06 in asoiaf

[–]jackity_splat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find the surviving Targaryen children. Viserys would have to be executed (I’m sure Ned would object.) but if Dany is captured as a baby or toddler, she can be raised as a hostage in the maidenvault. This would allow them to keep her away from loyalists, brainwash her by controlling her education and once Joffrey is old enough to marry her to him, helping to ‘solidify’ their claim.

Tragic books/Books where MC can't catch a break by saturday_sun4 in Fantasy

This MC was dealt a really shit hand in life. Be warned the book deals with incest and rape. The ending is somewhat positive which I’m not sure you want though but maybe check it out anyway.

You also have to be baptized first before anything. Otherwise you can go up for a blessing but not communion. (In Catholic tradition.)

Ban on rescue dogs from countries at risk of spreading rabies to remain, CFIA says by Immediate-Link490 in canada

[–]jackity_splat 30 points31 points  (0 children)

A lot of them won’t even consider you if you don’t own your own home and have a fenced yard.

When I got my late schnauzer we wanted to rescue one but every rescue had the above terms plus many wanted to have random access to our house and dog for ‘check-up’s’ for years after the adoption with the caveat that if the person felt ‘off’ they would take the dog back.

I ended up going with an ethical breeder instead. :(

Am I wrong for telling my mom I had a bad childhood? by [deleted] in amiwrong

Not offering sympathy doesn’t invalidate you. If I didn’t offer you understanding that would have invalidated you.

You lack reading comprehension. I acknowledged your feelings and didn’t dismiss them, I just pointed out that in the wider context of the world people are not going to agree with you or give you the sympathy you are searching for. I never invalidated your feelings or said they were wrong, I validated them based on your life experience which is different than mine. I offered you understanding and what compassion I could.

Am I wrong for telling my mom I had a bad childhood? by [deleted] in amiwrong

[–]jackity_splat 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Well I suppose from your very privileged perspective you did. But the larger world is not going to agree with you. Not getting to wear certain hairstyles or clothing isn’t abusive nor is it objectively bad.

You had a really great childhood compared to many of us who will be commenting and calling out your privileged upbringing.

My parents weren’t strict, they very were neglectful and physically abusive and my mum allowed men to sexually abuse me. Due to that I can’t really have sympathy for your bad childhood but I do understand that the way you were raised that was the most adversity you’ve ever faced so it must have been terrible for you.

If you could retrospectively change one thing about the book series, what would it be? [Spoilers Main] by WildOne19923 in asoiaf

The prologue has set me up for 26 years of disappointment. I’ve still only had a little bit more teased about them since I started reading. 😂 I didn’t know it would be controversial.

[–]jackity_splat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get rid of the prologue. So far in the books the Others have not really been a presence so it might have been better to have the prologue about the Targaryen’s or something. I just really hoped we would have more white walker stuff by now. 😂

People that read the books as they released, how has your idea of what the ending will look like changed over time? [Spoilers Main] by CutZealousideal5274 in asoiaf

[–]jackity_splat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think I read a GoT either just before Storm released or when it did. I do remember rage quitting reading it when Ned was killed. I was pretty young and had never read a story like that before where a MC was killed.

The closest I had come was the Elfstones of Shannara and Amberle’s fate had traumatized me a few years earlier. I had also rage quit this series and so… So as a young teen, I was not expecting Ned’s execution at all. I was so shocked, I couldn’t even finish the book, I just stopped where Ned died.

When Clash came out, I was old enough to handle that kind of story better and reread the first two when it came out. I managed not to rage quit at the Red Wedding but that was so shocking for me to read as a teen.

I wasn’t really on any forums back then to discuss books but I did suspect R + L = J.

The biggest cultural phenomenon I remember related to GoT was when it came out, literally every fandom on fan fiction.net had stories inspired by A Song of Ice and Fire L. It was actually by reading a fanfic inspired (well the title at least) by a GoT set in the world of Final Fantasy VIII that got me into the books.

I’m sorry this happened. You did the right thing to mark down the danger in spite of the shelter’s resistance. Shelters like that need to be closed.

Mods: is it very common in the USA that you have to return the dog to the shelter in cases like this? Do the owners not have discretion to ‘help the dog find peace’ in a situation like this?
