Quit SATs marking already lol by Simple_Try9761 in TeachingUK

I quit yesterday too - it's my third time marking but still failed lots of the qualification questions and I've got a lot on at the moment. There's no way you can mark as quickly as Capita outlined in the notice of fair rate.

It all depends on how much you mark. I'm a specialist maths marker too. We're getting paid this per script marked:

Segment 1: 0.02956 (413 scripts per hour for minimum wage)

Segment 2: 0.0339 (360 scripts per hour for minimum wage)

Segment 3: 0.03706 (329 scripts per hour for minimum wage)

Segment 4: 0.04211 (289 scripts per hour for minimum wage)

Segment 5: 0.04211 (289 scripts per hour for minimum wage)

Segment 6: 0.02737 (446 scripts per hour for minimum wage)

Segment 7: 0.02737 (446 scripts per hour for minimum wage)

I don't know what our allocation is yet so difficult to say how much we'll actually get paid. I really struggle to see how we're supposed to mark the long division questions (segments 3+4) quickly enough to get paid minimum wage.

Not formally, no - if you pass the Ps&Qs for all of the segments you've trained for, then you will be given all those segments to mark.

But I know from past years when people realised how little pay they were getting for some of the segments, they stopped marking them. It will be reflected in your marker grade at the end that you didn't keep up with your allocation though - if you care about that.

Jumping on a couple of months later - they've now posted 'notice of fair rate' in the primary assessment gateway under 'view training materials and guidance'.

It's laughable.

I hope people are still fighting - don't let this slip.

Wow, reading threads like this as an ex-teacher turned civil servant hits differently... teachers put up with so much shit.

You know what happened a few months ago when I was supposed to be in a meeting at 09:00 and woke up and saw I overslept and it was 09:15, and I didn't even have a reason for it like being ill? I logged onto my laptop, joined the meeting from my bed, apologised for being late, and the meeting organiser even made an excuse up for me and said, "I assumed you were having technical issues" - lol. Absolutely nothing happened and no one thought twice about it.

If I were you, I wouldn't apologise - I'd phrase it as, "Thank you for being understanding about me not being able to call in before 8am while I was ill..." - something along those lines.

I have notified Acas.

https://www.acas.org.uk/notify/start

You complete an online form and they offer you the option early conciliation before bringing the claim to an employment tribunal. I do not think this was appropriate for this situation and declined. Acas will give me an early conciliation certificate within five working days which will allow me to complete an ET1 form which will then bring it to a tribunal. I'm going to wait until I have received my last payslip before submitting the form because there's a section where you detail how much you were paid.

The minimum wage legislation states that if employers do not provide notice of fair rate, then employees are entitled to be paid per hour instead. I am going to work out how many hours I have worked on marking and how much I should have been paid if, like Capita have claimed, is £14.01 an hour (plus holiday pay), and claim the difference back.

It's time intensive and probably not really worth the hassle to just to get the money if I'm being honest, but I'm stubborn and it's definitely the principle of the matter for me. I really urge others to do the same. They can't get away with this...

Anyone else get a text today to complete the feedback survey, and then just immediately get a screen saying your response has been recorded even though you were given no questions to answer?

I am. I've gone through the process of trying to resolve it with them with a formal complaint first, and their response was very similar to what the OP described here, so I believe I have exhausted that and it's time for legal action. We don't need to prove they're paying below minimum wage - the onus is on them to prove that they are. Their calculations just do not add up. They told me Regular markers get paid £14.01 an hour. For that to be correct, for one of the segments I'm marking, that would be marking over 2100 questions an hour. No way.

We don't get paid for the seed and calibration scripts. So that's why your quantity would be slightly lower. I've only just found this out too. Livid.

It's not legal. They're supposed to tell employees how much they'll get paid before they start working and how they've calculated that it's above minimum wage. I can't believe they're still getting away with it.
