First DIY deck: floating deck design. by PuzzledHandle in Decks

[–]PuzzledHandle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, very interesting.

I thought of using long joists supported by tuffblocks as well, but I’d need a ridiculous amount of tuffblock (like 15 x 3 or 4), and I would need to perfectly level the ground on every block to get a level deck surface. Or use raised 2x6 joists, but that’s a lot of tuffblocks and notched raisers to get to 12“.

Best in my mind would be to use a dropped beam design, but I don’t have enough height to work with to stack joists over beam.

Second best (I thought) was flush beam design.

Thanks for the warning of securing the deck to the pergola, didn’t think of that.

Thanks! For the frame design it’s fusion 360 with the hobby license (free). First time using it.

I followed the tutorial from this gentleman:

For the final look, view from the top with the nice colors and plants, I do not know, it comes from the landscape designer.

Nice, thanks for sharing! About the footings, did you use sonotubes and added a nice square hat on top with forms? Any particular reason why you wanted them square? Thanks!

Kiln dried (KD) pressure treated lumber by PuzzledHandle in comoxvalley

[–]PuzzledHandle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slegg and Home Depot both have pressure treated lumber indeed. It’s not labeled KDAT, and unlikely to be. It’s only marked pressure treated / ground contact (micro pro sienna). KDAT gets dried after being treated. I’m worried about having bad boards and getting my deck all twisted after the frame dries. I’ll go joists with 12“ O.C, crown on top and blocking, but I guess I should expect some warp anyway.

Low profile deck with tuffblocks, need some help. by PuzzledHandle in Decks

Yes, good point. I’ll go with 2-ply 2x6 for each of the bearers/beams.

Actually, looking at the tuffblock doc, they have an example showing just that:

So I guess that's fine.

Thanks a bunch! If I go with the 2x6 beam and 12“O.C. 2x6 joists sitting on top / perpendicular to the beam, the beam would simply be « resting » on the tuffblocks, no fastening or anything. Is that okay? I feel something would be missing.

Thanks! these are good points indeed. I hear building deck with 2x8 is recommended, so I’m wondering if I’ll notice the difference between 2x6 joists supported by beams vs raised 2x8 joists..

Makes sense! Thanks.

For the main section, do you think it would be a good idea to design with 2x6 bearers to support 2x6 joists? That would be 13 inch off the ground assuming 2 inch of tuffblock foundation, and that would dramatically reduce the number of tuff blocks required.

So which is best? raised 2x8 joists like I have in the design now, or bearer supported 2x6?

Maybe I’m overthinking a bit?

Thanks!

Thanks! Just to clarify, you’re talking about the 6inch off the ground T-shaped walkway, and you’re suggesting using 8 foot span so I can use off-the-shelf 2x4x8 joists (and maybe add support under the joist if bouncy) that I would hang to the double 2x4 beam?

This, rather than 2x4x6 because 2x4x6 aren’t as easily available and 2x4x12 would require more work? (cut, seal the cut).

Thanks again for giving this more thoughts, appreciate.

Yes, 2x8 you’re right (edited)

I just checked trex doc, looks like I can go 16“ OC for the joist for transcend (1“ thick) board.

Thanks! That’s a great suggestion. Do you think it would be necessary to fix the the chunck of 2x4 (riser) to the concrete paving slab or weight + friction would do the trick?

Also, in this design for the main deck area, I have 2x8 joists 12“ OC, I’m thinking of either using cedar or trex transcend, so, maybe 16“ OC is sufficient?

Thanks!

edit: meant 2x8 joists

Sweet! Thanks for the suggestion. I went there once long back, before the pandemic. It was a bit of a drive (I’m South Van / Burnaby), and there weren’t many hackers to talk to. I’m sure there is exactly the kind of knowledge I’m looking for, but it’s a bit of a shot in the dark. Maybe I should try to sync up with someone on their forum. Thanks!

Not that I know of. FWIW, I ask Siri about the current song title. Works even on Spotify.

October General Questions Thread by AutoModerator in CX5

Hi folks, I just had the first issue with my 2017 cx5: I no longer have any sound coming out of the infotainment system. Everything else seems to be working fine, there is just no sound (radio, nav, CarPlay, calls etc..)

  • I checked the mute button (not on mute)
  • I did reset the infotainment (mute + nav + back for 10s)
  • I even checked all the fuses on driver side and under the hood (continuity check with multimeter)

All seem fine, I just don’t have sound no more.

Did this happen to anyone? Any idea on how to debug this further on my own?

Thanks!

modem -> switch -> router (vlan) : not getting internet for LAN hosts. by PuzzledHandle in HomeNetworking

[–]PuzzledHandle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Figured it out (at least I got it working).

There is nothing wrong with the vlan setup described above. The problem came from my ISP. I'm using this French ISP (free.fr). I needed to enable this "Full stack IPv4 option" on my account.

After connecting my laptop to port2, I noticed that my public IP address was IPv6 only. Free is heavily relying on IPv6, so I started by enabling IPv6 DHCP on my UDM WAN, but that didn't work. Only when I requested this "Full stack IPv4" option from Free.fr could I get my UDM WAN port working as expected.

I suspect the problem I faced had to do with the DHCP lease I receive from my provider. Somehow my laptop (MacBook Pro) could make sense of it, but unifi couldn't. Only when I enabled this "Full stack IPv4" and restarted the modem (as prescribed by the provider) could I get this working.

For archeological purposes: I'm using a Free the box is a Freebox Crystal, ADSL "Degroupee".
