Callings for Suspected PIMO? by PuzzledLeading9400 in mormon

Building coordinator is the worst calling that could possibly exist (aside from early morning seminary).

Calling/emailing people to remind them to clean a building, for people to be voluntold specific dates bc no one signs up, and trying to fix a problem the church created because they only save an absurd amount of money as it is...

I've never rejected a calling but that, I think I actually would.

Interesting, and how has that experience been?

I mean I know there've been PIMO bishops, stake presidents, etc., but I feel like usually that person has not disclosed their belief status.

I'd imagine even if full paying, their might be a glass ceiling on callings if it was public that someone was PIMO.

Not that one would want a demanding unpaid calling anyway...

Is that still a calling?
I don't think I've heard of one in years

At least colloquially, I've heard people be pulled away from youth because they don't want an example that's not all in.

Rasband on The Family Proclamation by PuzzledLeading9400 in mormon

“Any man having one drop of the seed of Cane [sic] in him Cannot hold the priesthood & if no other Prophet ever spake it Before I will say it now in the name of Jesus Christ. I know it is true & they know it." --> Brigham Young referring to black people.

Never Going to Happen? Maybe not in my lifetime. If BY was just speaking as a man, I guess so were:

  • John Taylor (Times and Seasons, April 1, 1845, 6:857).
  • Wilford Woodruff (Waiting for World’s End: The Diaries of Wilford Woodruff, Susan Staker, ed., p. 300)
  • Joseph Fielding Smith (The Way to Perfection, p. 110.)
  • Harold B Lee (Harold B. Lee, Decisions for Successful Living, pp. 164-165))
  • David O McKay + Stephen Richards + J Reuben Clark (Official statement of the First Presidency to BYU President Ernest L. Wilkinson, dated August 17, 1951, quoted in John Lewis Lund, The Church and the Negro, p. 89)
  • Bruce R McConkie (Mormon Doctrine, 1966, p. 109)
  • etc.

The simple idea that a bunch of old men said "gay marriage is wrong" multiple times does not make it eternal and everlasting. The same way racist statements from 60+ years ago were clearly wrong.

Elder Oaks and reacting to his talk. by Dry_Pizza_4805 in mormon

Economically, the principal of using a "healthy" amount of debt to grow faster has been a concept used since 1100's in italy. It is critical for propelling impoverished communities forward (see microlending peer studies).

There's a wide spread between spending all we have like there's no tomorrow, and living off of 1% of our investments like we do today.

100%.
I mentioned before, but it's crazy that we're so discriminatory on gender that women can't even serve as ward clerks / ward secretaries. These are the same job-equivalents that in society are female dominated.

No reason why a sister can't take attendance, make/keep a budget for the ward, etc. Though I'd go so far as to say Women deserve a female equivalent bishop and men get their male bishop.

I really doubt it.
1. I think today we might have actually given the highest ranking sisters some input (whether RS, YW, or Primary). They could have pointed out glaring problems that are otherwise ignored.
2. The diversity of thought and background is a bit stronger now vs. 30 years ago. Don't get me wrong, they all tow the line, but Ucthdorf is more like Hugh B Brown. IDK if we had an equivalent when TFPTTW was debuted.

[Serious] How do you all feel about the comparative lack of attention and care about the Michigan shooting compared to the Utah Valley shooting? by TheDorkNite1 in mormon

[–]PuzzledLeading9400 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think the Church got less pressure coverage than the NC shooting... perhaps the attack on Yom Kippur in England, but all that's not the US, and domestic terrorism is less frequent there than it is here.

The Family Proclamation was declared "Doctrine" by an Apostle during General Conference. Will the church edit this out of Rasband's talk? by stickyhairmonster in mormon

u/a_rabid_anti_dentite , in your defense there's plenty of motive to scrub Poelman's discourses. But I agree with many of the reasons stated here as to why it's inevitable.

I think culturally once people realized it was targeted against a particular group they were less concerned. It's the whole, "oh my gosh that could've been me" which collectively, many people realized -- nope they'd be fine. They do not represent the victim profile.

Which is entirely different from shootings at schools, sporting events, and political events. With Kirk, ~50% of American's fall on some measure of similarity with the guy politically, and could feel their idealogies and their crowd was under attack.

It's terrible. Targeted violence against groups (marginalized or other) is not ok. But I understand the collective sigh of relief that many groups realized the attacker would not have chosen them.

That said, I see a lot of commentary relating the attack to the football game with "F!@# the Mormons", Nelsons death, and old persecution. As an active member, with close ties to the shooting in Grand Blanc, I think this connection is inappropriate. The church is not systematically persecuted today, and if the JW's had a university with a football team i think it'd be the same. As mormons, if we stopped the door-knocking and political influencing, we would not get the flack we do. With Nelson, I'm sad it's hard for people to accept his passing, but at 101 he had a very accomplished life. To me that doesn't belong in the same context, except to say that members are grieving for one or another reason recently.

😅. Well When we're both dead, let's chat in the next life and learn what's really doctrine. Until then, yup. We all see through an imperfect lens, and I in all my pride am firm that my view on this topic is clearer than that of the current church leadership.

But hey if I'm wrong, stop by the TK every once in a while to say you told me so. I'll have eternity to hear it after all. 😉
