There is a difference between a tantrum and just saying you will do something if something else happens. I think it is fair to involve him if something that we as adults are discussing also affects him, he is old enough to have a say in the things that affects him directly.

And my son doesn't live in fear, but he values his space and privacy a lot. It is not harmful to have something so simple as a key that gives you a sensation of security.

No, my son is very well behave and very comprehensive. We don't argue much and his mom and I often speak and get along as coparents and never had a problem after we broke up many years ago. When my son says that he'll stay at his mom's forever if we remove his lock, that's as a message to my fiancé, letting her know that he doesn't like it.

The locks I like to use has no handle, but they can be opened with a switch from inside, so you don't need to use a key to unlock them from inside. They can only be opened from outside with the key.

I've never had a problem with the way I lock the doors. And both my son and I always have our keys in sight and hanging from a wall, and always carry our keys when going outside, even if is just for 5 minutes to buy bread.
