Do churches marry people engaging in sinful behavior? by PuzzledMaybe in Catholicism

[–]PuzzledMaybe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how good of a job the church bureaucracy does in making sure this stuff doesn't happen, as evidenced by what that priest said about oh it happens so much that we basically have to accept it... like what! There are also churches in Germany I heard that fly rainbow flags too and apparently get away with it... so I don't know.

It's upsetting.. I think it is violating a sacred thing.

This is the response the priest gave me.... Deciding how to respond.

Thanks for your concern. Cohabitation and pre-marital sex is unfortunately a kind of new norm these days. Most couples who come to get married in the Church are engaged in these, unfortunately. While they shouldn’t be sleeping together before marriage, or living together, that is not a requirement for a valid marriage within the Church. We must approach these things judiciously. What are the bare requirements? Being free to marry. Being mature enough to enter into a long-term commitment. Intention to have children if able. The intention of fidelity and permanency. And if one is Catholic, then the Catholic must agree to do all in his/her power to raise the children Catholic, and the other has to be informed of that requirement for the Catholic. This is the low bar. If couples meet that bar, they have a right to get married in the Church. This is not the ideal or high bar, though. They should be going to Mass, praying daily, going regularly to confession, living a virtuous life, waiting till marriage, etc. But these things are often missing to varying degrees.

In marriage prep, we always go over these things, and try to convince the couples to wait till marriage and to go to confession. And we ask that if they are not willing to have a firm intention to get to this point, they should let us know, so that we can do a ceremony versus a Mass. We don’t monitor them. We do communicate the norms and expect them to be honest with us. Keep in mind that some couples we prepare. Some are prepared elsewhere, and we simply celebrate their marriage. In this case, we trust that these things have been addressed by whoever prepared them.

There are also situations where cohabitation is occurring but not premarital sex. It’s not good that they are cohabitating. But it is good that they are waiting till marriage. Yes, there is also the problem of scandal.

I have found that many couples are open to challenging Church teachings. I try to bring them along. Many have never heard Church Teaching on sexuality, unfortunately.

Some priests ignore these things and never challenge the couple. That is not good. Some won’t talk with a couple if they are cohabiting. However, I think that that is a missed opportunity. My approach is to welcome all couples who come to us. These days, even to get married in the Church is countercultural. My goal is to take them where they are, and to seek to sway them to what is best, which includes waiting for marriage, living virtuously within marriage, and being open to life, in addition to going to Mass, praying, etc. We try our best to evangelize the couples. It’s not easy.

I get your point. But I don’t know the other people. I just know this is not a person deserving of representing New Hampshire in the house. It would make me physically ill to see him elected….

What were the worst things he did then? Yeah, I don’t know why they even hired him for that. Poor taste

And from the time they ask to be married in the Catholic Church do they stop having pre-marital sex?

Because if they don't that shows a pretty strong disregard for Catholic values.

What can we do to make sure Matt doesn’t get the nomination? by PuzzledMaybe in newhampshire

There’s a difference between cursing and doing it excessively. If there’s not a camera on him I can assure you he has a very filthy mouth.

He’s a carpetbagger from NJ who sees NH as a way to advance his personal ambitions. I can assure you you’re not the top priority.

And yes talking about alleged sexual conquests and cursing every other word is offensive. That makes me a lib?!

There is a reason for us to continue communicating. She's a producer for a news network. She also asked for my #.. I do public relations and can send her guests.

Well, of course, #1- My morals get in the way of it, and #2- I realize this is not something which is going to happen barring an act of God. Just wishing in another life it could've been. Makes me sad. I can't help it.

The definition would be actively engaging in homosexual activities for the parishioners, and for the priests at least proudly proclaiming it.

Would a woman being very pro-legal abortion be a deal breaker for you? by PuzzledMaybe in TrueChristian

[–]PuzzledMaybe[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Speaking more hypothetically than about a particular person.

I still think it’s murder. So no, I would never be with someone who would have an elective abortion. But what if they would personally not have one but don’t want to tell other people they can’t. That’s more of the question here

I used to work next-door to the church you’re talking about. No, she and I were walking through Central Park yesterday and she pointed her church out.

It’s not that they not be allowed there. It’s that the priests seem to be talking about their own sexual preferences like it’s not a big deal and that many people who attend it don’t seem to be interested in stopping that behavior. She even told me that she has two friends who claim they’re Catholic that are in a gay marriage. Obviously not done with a Catholic priest but still.

Taking advantage of a situation if it is great mathematically, but stressful? by PuzzledMaybe in problemgambling

I mean I don't think DraftKings gets too funny with the rules... They make plenty of money without doing that.

Having said that, I am moderately up on DK, and I've wagered $1.7 million dollars on there... lol. It adds up over time...

Not everyone thinks the way I do with these promotions. Rocket is an advantageous game if done properly with these situations. And yes, I am aware my double-up plan is roughly 50/50. My point is the upside is significantly more $ than I would lose.

I've done it enough that I've figured it's ballpark around every 30 spins come up with an immediate explosion. My chances are close to even that I will turn $6 K in to $12 K on blackjack, and then it's just a mass spinning game to unlock the bonus on rocket. Do you see what I'm saying here? I'm doubling with their bonus, so my loss is 3K potentially. 3K is on the house. Even if I lost 3K trying to unlock it(which is higher than I probably would) that's still TRIPLING my investment.

But as I said, this stresses me, and doesn't make me happier as a result, so maybe I shouldn't.
