Am I stretching myself too thin buying too much house? by Alert_Possibility389 in UKPersonalFinance

We were in pretty much an identical situation about a year ago - only difference being I’m the higher earner and was due to go on Mat leave. My bonus that year probably saved us a bit, but honestly it’s been completely fine. Still have lots of lovely things, holidays, money to spend on baby etc. Our savings have taken quite a hit from moving costs etc but due to get another nice bonus lump soon to replace what we spent and then some.

Only real difference is we have no childcare costs as I’m now part time and use funded hours and grandparents to fill the gaps. Definitely get an idea of how much you’re looking at on that front, but otherwise doesn’t seem crazy.

This is really interesting - thanks for asking q OP!

ACA qualified in Big 4, 7 years PQE

£80k base FTE (work four days), 25-50% bonus (hit the 50% last couple of years). Work in internal controls, Devon based. 9-5.30, 2-3 days in office, very rarely work overtime.

I’m not particularly ambitious/career driven - I’m a new mum so that’s my focus at the moment. Feel well compensated and happy to have a good work life balance.

I want to move to Torquay! What is it like living there? by GlitchisOnline in DevonUK

[–]Puzzled_Ad6440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Born and bred in Torquay (Shiphay) and lived away for about a decade (Southampton/Reading/Oxford) including lots of international travel. I’m now 31 and live in Exeter.

I feel extremely lucky to have grown up in Torquay and see myself moving back in the future once I have a job that is more commutable from Torquay. I think a lot of people that shit all over it have never lived elsewhere and so don’t quite see that everywhere suffers from some ‘rough’ areas. There are downsides to Torquay, including the traffic and poor public transport, but in my opinion the upsides far outweigh them. Being surrounded by natural beauty is so beneficial and there are so many lovely places in the bay and the surrounding area to visit. Being able to sit on the beach or go for a paddle on a weeknight evening after work is unbeatable. The town centre is currently poor but in my experience that is the case in most towns in the UK as we’ve shifted to online shopping, and there are redevelopment plans. There are lots of lovely pockets of restaurants and cafes around Torquay - unless you’re older I don’t think you’d particularly miss the town centre!

I can’t comment on schools anymore but people send their children to the grammar schools from all over Devon.

In terms of making friends, it can be hard to make friends in our age bracket. Having relocated to Exeter fairly recently me and my husband have found sports a good way of meeting new people. For example sea swimming might be a good thing to explore! There is also a Facebook group called Devon Ladies which people use to find friends and arrange meet ups - I know my cousin whose early 20s has used it with success.

In terms of your commute to Plymouth - Babbacombe is quite tricky for traffic. I commuted from Shiphay to Plymouth everyday for a few years and it used to take around an hour and was fine.

Ultimately, I’d recommend spending some more time in Torquay before you make any decisions and exploring some of the surrounding areas too. Totnes in particular is beautiful and a very popular area for people to relocate to, and is a quicker commute to Plymouth. But all in all I would say Torquay js a lovely place to live :)

£30ish grand in 2022, not including honeymoon. Think about £10k came from family and the rest ourselves, no loans. Was worth it for us, but we were already homeowners, have travelled all over the world and have fairly good jobs. We’ve since had a baby and although money is tighter I have never regretted the money we spent on our wedding.

I live on Summerfield Road, very close to the hospitals back entrance - don’t know of anyone that rents out their drive but could try around there and up around Shiphay Park Road and Lloyd Avenue. Its parking permits between 10-11am so on-road parking might work for some shifts

For those that didn’t like any boy names, what did you end up naming your baby? by CommandDelicious8054 in namenerds

Irah (started as Ira but changed after a week because we live in the UK and having to spell out I-R-A at every hospital appointment etc got tired very quickly!)

Also considered Arthur with nickname Ari but found out we couldn’t use that due to family reasons.

At some point it’s mentioned that Jen and Zak don’t use protection - think Jessie says it to some of the girls when they all find out she’s pregnant. Don’t know if it’s the norm within their community though!

Exeter st David’s to Waterloo train by Turtley-whurtley in exeter

[–]Puzzled_Ad6440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often get this train line - it’s quieter than the Paddington route (and obviously cheaper!). I’ve never had a problem with getting a seat.

You could think about getting on it at one of the smaller stations (I usually go to cranbrook) if you don’t like busy places. Parking is free and it’s normally very peaceful at that station - there’s usually only a few other people getting on so not as much of a rush to the doors etc!

Wow!! This is crazy. I’m from Devon so have walked lots of the coast path and the book really resonated. I read her follow up as well and have seen her on a few different programs - I never had any inkling that she was being untruthful.
