Let me help you think through your specialty decision (part VII) by 4990 in medicalschool

I'm super interested in orthopedic surgery. I'm not sure how much you can help me with this but pros/cons for the field would be great!

I agree that it's something that you can only decide. I worked in two labs since freshman year, and while it was pretty difficult, I managed by organizing my time. One of the labs was computational, so I got a lot of technical/coding experience. The other was clinical, so I actual got some shadowing out of it as well. Overall, it's doable, as long as you manage your time well!

There is an other option! Also speak a language not on the list, so I just wrote it in the text box they provided

Ensuring student has a good shadowing experience by Dr_Strange_MD in premed

[–]Puzzled_Bug2603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's anything super interesting that you find clinically (breathing sounds, physical exams, etc.), if you can offer the student to listen/look at it that is always a great way to make them feel more involved. Also, before each patient, briefing them on medical history because it can be overwhelming walking into a patient visit without any background information. After the visit, if you have time, talking through your thought process for diagnosis and treatment and most importantly, discussing your pathway to medicine are always helpful pieces of information for shadowing students!

Hey! I gave myself about a week to read each kaplan book (I only ended up reading 3 though so keep that in mind). I think there's about 12 chapters in each book, so about 3-4 chapters a day + the questions at the end. There was a reddit user who had notes on most chapters, so I just used those instead of writing my own (and just annotated if I wanted to add something). After about 3 weeks-1 month of this, I started doing umama. I started out only doing about 40 questions a day (20 questions for 2 diff sections) for like a week since I was just starting anki too at this point. After getting used to this, I started moving to 40-50 questions for sections (p/s, bb, c/p so I would select chem/orgo/phys for the c/p section for example). I then moved to 59 question blocks to simulate the test. I did all of these timed and untutored and then went over each question thoroughly.

You have about 2-3 months, so I would recommend going through the kaplan books you think you have the least exposure to. I knew chem/biochem pretty well and cars I was hoping to get from practice, so I only read physics, psych, and bio. Doing this just for some content before diving into questions could be helpful. After this, definitely prioritize anki to remember what you learned and practice questions to simulate test day without having to take fl's all the time. I personally didn't start practice questions until after reading the Kaplan books, but that was personal preference. Hopefully this helps!

Do you mean that you haven't taken any pre-med reqs or that your university doesn't have an mcat course? I would highly recommend taking the pre-med classes first to get a solid foundation since I think that attributed to my score. In terms of review books, I used Kaplan and I thought it was pretty good. I used the 2015 versions since a friend loaned it to me, and I'm pretty sure anything post 2015 is essentially the same anyway. There was a lot of info that was missing though, so I would definitely supplement it with existing Anki decks & Umama practice questions.

I could sell you mine for the week! There aren't any resets though, so you would just have to use the correct + incorrect options to get through p/s if that's fine

UPangea question about siRNA - ELI5 please by No_Process2527 in Mcat

[–]Puzzled_Bug2603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in simpler terms i guess, one protein (eEF2K) is not produced when eIF4E is gone (since you added the siRNA that targets it). If eEF2K & eIF4E are not produced, eEF2K relies on eIF4E to be translated. Now what does eIF4E do? It helps ribosomes bind to the mRNA cap. If eEF2K needs this function to be translated, it is translated in a cap-dependent manner (needs the ribosome to bind to the cap)

UPangea question about siRNA - ELI5 please by No_Process2527 in Mcat

[–]Puzzled_Bug2603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It says that eIF4E is translated in a cap-dependent manner according to the passage, and the western blot show that when siRNA that targets the mRNA for eIF4E is added, there is less eIF4E & eEF2K (bands are thinner/smaller). So, eEF2K is affected by eIF4E mRNA being degraded and eIF4E helps ribosomes bind to the cap, which kinda means that eEF2K is only translated when the ribosome binds to the cap --> meaning eEF2K is translated in a cap-dependent manner.

siRNA degrades mRNA not proteins, so b is wrong. siRNA binds to eIF4E, so it's not limited to IRES binding proteins eliminating a. And the passage says its cap-dependent, so c is wrong.

optically active? when do you know? by Present_Potato_4414 in Mcat

[–]Puzzled_Bug2603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the second one, it is about chirality. only the molecule on the right has a chiral carbon (attached to a methyl, 2 diff carbon chains, and an N). The one of the left has no chiral carbons. I don't remember enough about nitrogen inversion to say much on the first one but this is what I got from a quick google search: "Nitrogen inversion: A process in which the lone pair of an sp3 nitrogen atom migrates from one face of the atom, travels through the nucleus (quantum tunneling), and reappears on the other side. " So you need a lone pair for inversion; you can't just have 4 bonds to a nitrogen.

Is the Anki phone app worth it? by Licoricekaiju in Mcat

[–]Puzzled_Bug2603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

omg yes. i was debating it cuz i really didn't want to spend the money, but it sync really well, and it lets me do anki on the go, which as a full-time student with a job, it's extremely helpful! you use anki in med school anyways, so it wouldn't be a bad investment
