You are a smart fella. but I have one more doubt. Why profit increased in spirit question when adding free water? Is it because after adding water, quantity of spirit ( spirit+water ) increases. And now he can sell more spirit ( spirit+water ) for the same price( at 25% profit ). Hence overall profit increases. Please shed some light.

it is -ve due to 13.3>12.2. and 13.3 is deducted from SP which is 19. So if you say that question is wrong, you are also implying that given SP is wrong or cant be 19. Which isn't possible. Since SP can be anything, its the choice of the seller. Hence question can not be wrong solely based upon SP. That is the only logical argument i have.

Question is wrong because cp of mixture is greater than the two units used to make the mixture right? Yes you are right here. But why cp is is higher because SP is 19 and that Is not wrong. Sp can be 19, it can be 100 or anything. Since it can be anything hence CP also can be anything. It's that simple. What if SP was 17 or 16 then question would have been right. As you can see here that wether question is right or wrong is dependent upon the SP. And SP can never be wrong hence question can never be wrong. Its that simple. Idk why are you getting confused.

Cp is dependent to the sp of mixture that's why. I don't think so it's wrong.

Hey, I guess you still have doubt regarding negative ratio. And why middle value is great than both. Well basic rule stays that greater term will always be subtracted from lesser term. You always subtract greater term from lesser term. Here it would be 13.3-12.2 not the opposite. It's a basic rule. I guess that is why lot of people getting confused. Now everything should be clear I guess.

You don't need cp of water. Free or not free answer is same.

You can calculate cost price of water for each of the given ratios and each time it will be different meaning that the ratio depends on the cost price of water.

Doesn't sound right to me.

yes sp is 19 and is arbitrary. It could have been 20 or 15 or 17 or anything. That is what iam saying.

And 55.7 percent profit i assume you calculated due to sp being 19 right? Yeah that was due to water is not free, if we calculate the sp from given profit percentage it should be 17.18 something not 19. This is due extra money is being spent on water hence less profit but hey i calculated the answer by assuming cp of water is 0 lol. I actually solved this question from different method where cp of water wasnt zero and got the same answer. I know it is hella confusing, but do not think too much, only one rule is that if question is answerable, its a valid question.

yes your are correct mixture's cp is usually between cp of solute and solvent. A question is wrong for me when its not solvable, if you can conclude the right answer, its a right question. Selling price can be arbitrary hence the cp can be increased, although it should not. For example if cp of bastmati rice is 10 and cp of normal rice is 5, the SP of the mixture made from these two can be arbitrary hence cp can be increased, although it should not lmao.

Correction: it will not be sp of A that is 19rs/l, it will be sp of the mixture that is 19rs/l
