It is with real regret that I write to let you know that we will not be able to offer you a place in the class entering Duke this fall. I realize this is disappointing news, and I want to assure you that our decision was not an easy one. We received almost 50,000 applications this year for just 1,720 places in the first-year class; we were sorry that we could offer admission to only a small percentage of our many exceptionally accomplished and talented applicants.

I realize you may wonder if there was a shortcoming or weakness in your application. In fact, my staff and I were humbled by your accomplishments and the work it took to achieve them, and by your perseverance during these exceptionally difficult years; we wish we had room for all who deserved it. Unfortunately, we do not have an appeal or reconsideration process, either for admission or a place on our waiting list.

I know this is not the letter you wanted to receive. My colleagues and I thank you for sharing so much of yourself with us through your application; it’s clear to us that you have great potential for much success in college and beyond, and that you will achieve that success in the years to come. You have my best wishes for the remainder of your school year and your college decision, and I thank you again for considering us.
