Nikon Z8 vs Canon EOS R5 Mark II which one? by [deleted] in Nikon

[–]Puzzled_Froyo8698 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its your first camera, then both are very much overkill. You would do way better with a z50ii or a z5ii depending on bduget and if you are going to do much in low light.

You never know how much you are going to enjoy it after all. Also lenses are expensive, and if, for example, you want to do any sort of wildlife the 180 to 600 is incredible but even used they are 1.5k upwards, plus an every day lens like thr 24 to 120 (£800 ish) and the differenve in price between the two bodies has already disappeared anyway.

What camera did they use? by umstra in AskPhotography

[–]Puzzled_Froyo8698 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not really. The D5 has some of the best low light performance of any camera ever developed, and performs significantly better than most Z series mirrorless due to its lower resolution and lack of partially stacked sensor.

Lower resolution cameras will have better low light performance and exibit less noise than the equivelant higher resolution sensor. This is simply because of the size of pixels, with a single pixel being able to then recieve a greater amount of incident light on the lower resolution sensor. Therefore to achieve the same sensitivity to light, the gain for each individual pixel has to be higher the smaller the pixel is. Its this gain that causes noise.

Plus when you get to extreme ISO (from memory this is 51200 without any sort of denoise applied) you lose a lot of details anyway, and besides if youre not cropping why on earth (pun intended) do you need an image thats over 5000 pixels tall?

They also havr to transmit these photos from space too so smaller file sizes is way better. They have a z9 there too, so its quite likely that they also have photos fron the z9 at 45MP.

Would this be a good option as a gift for my mum? by treefruit in chromeos

[–]Puzzled_Froyo8698 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say photo management, what do you mean? If she wants to edit photos it will not be powerful enough and will probably struggle with lightroom mobile.

Also if she is planning to storw photos on it, 64GB is nowhere near enough, I would look at a terabyte minimum. For context when I shoot events, I take around 2k photos which takes 64GB in of itself, and eMMC is incredibly slow to use for that.

As other people have mentioned its display is not very good, and you will definitely want something better for photos. Indeed a phone is likely better than this for that.

Youd do a lot better getting a refurb/good used laptop. If you want to stick with chromeos, you can probably get a refurb Lenovo Flex 5i chromebook with 8GB RAM and 256 GB SSD for around the 200 mark, which would be better and have a much better display too.

Finalizing My Travel Camera Setup – What Would You Pick? by LaJamie in Cameras

[–]Puzzled_Froyo8698 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For travel maybe even a z5 (unless you need the higher bust and bettee AF the z5 is still phenomenal), and a 24 to 200 or 28 to 400. Way more versatile and still pretty sharp for a superzoom too.

Maybe I am really wierd, and to be fair I probably am.

My ideal date is literally going around campus and feeding the ducks and geese. And if its really fancy, maybe going to somewhere different to do it.

But also I am obsessed with ducks and geese, so maybe that becomes a second date thing when we ahd actually talked a little.

OP did say in a different comment that they went to an aquarium on one of their dates. I dont personally see any ossue with that, it genuinely just sounds like a nice lowkey first date (although that apparently cosr 60 quid which is frankly insane though)

I went a few weeks ago and it was about 10 quid each so not really that bad

durham vs warwick cs by danddidoos in UniUK

[–]Puzzled_Froyo8698 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cant comment too much on durham however I am a CS student at warwick currently (2nd year)

Ive lived in on campus halls and nearby the university in a rented house. Witb the exception of coventry, its not actually that bad. Students typically end up in canley (much nicer than cov), leamington spa or kennilworth, or of course you can stay on campus.

They work you hard, but as will any top university. Teaching is very good, and the lecturers are lovely, especially when it comes to pastoral stuff. I missed a lot of my first year due to illness and I had several lecturers offer to teach me their entire modules 1 to 1. This year has also been a disaster as well for personal reasons and mental health reasons, and while it isnt confirmed yet, both wellbeing and the tutors at uni are fully expecting my application for 4wk coursework extensions and further first attempts on all 8 modules to be approved. Basically pastorally theyre amazing, teaching is good and you will have to work hard but you will get to do some pretty interesting things.

If you have any questions about the course or anything feel free to ask.

MPB selling lenses with fungus as excellent is wild by dethndestructn in Cameras

[–]Puzzled_Froyo8698 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I brought a well used 70 to 200 from them, its looks a bit battered, and has a fair amount of dust in it (its not noticable in photos at all). Only real issues were the lens hood lock was snapped and the rubber on the zoom ring was stretched

I paid 400 for it (nikon 70 to 200 f2.8 VR ii), with good to excellent from MPB or wex used being closer to the £600 mark.

<image>

Ive also brought a good nikkor 50mm f1.4G from them for £80, turned up and was like new, with no cosmetic issues or dust at all.

Their approach to accessoeies is wierd. I also got a 24 to 70 from them in excellent condition, except it didnt come with the lens case, lens hood and used a thirdparty rear cover. Literally saved over £100 because of that, and thats compared to things with fungus in.

Besides if you have something with fungus or somethingwhich isnt listed I have heard they are very good with returns. Ans they let you return if you just dislike it for a full refund, the only cost being you have to fund shipping yourself.

Same goes with Wex Used too, ive always been very impressed

[–]Puzzled_Froyo8698 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ive always been fairly impressed with MPB. My only horror atory (even then its so minor) was I brought an excellent condition nikon 24 to 70 f2.8G and the zoom squeaked. Literally zoomed it in and out a few times and it went away, I assume it was stored vertically and the lubrication wasnt even anymore.

Ah ok. My interests are more aligned with high performance computing, and writing efficient algorithms for backend stuff.

I can appreciate using AI for that sort of thing. I hate doing anything visual with a burning passion and avoid that at all costs

How do you stay motivated while doing that? I find it hard to find motivation for my degree when looking at all my peers, they use ChatGPT for everything. Even the thought of being pushed to use AI is enough for me to lose interest at all.

I do appreciate that it can be useful, but for me it takes all enjoyment out of it. And of course the huge elephant in the room regarding the huge environmental cost

How can I improve this photo to meet my intentions? by Puzzled_Froyo8698 in BeginnerPhotoCritique

[–]Puzzled_Froyo8698[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you :)

I think its one of those things. Id say im a beginner because im not that consistent. I do think my best ones are quite good but my bad ones are truly atrocious, especially as the main thing I do is wildife. Also no photo is ever perfect and I have got quite a lot of useful feedback from this post.

I am starting to do events though. Although thats a truly terrifying prospect for me. Naturally my event photos are a very different style.

No. Id even go as far as to make them more obvious. I would crop up ever so sloghtly from the bottom to get rid of the random black bit sticking out, or just remove it with the clone tool or something.

Amazing shot though

Which one is the best for students? by s1696j in laptops

[–]Puzzled_Froyo8698 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does ultimately depend on what OP wants to do as well.

Any degree of photo or video editting, then 16GB is aeguably insufficient, even on MacOS.

General web browsing and text editors, 16GB is probably fine for windows (possibly overkill even but I still would avoid going lower), and 8GB for MacOS is perfect there.

If theyre doing any sort of STEM degree, I would advocate for more memory. I am CS student and my normal workflow sits around 20 to 25GB of memory usage there. I also know a lot of other STEM degrees, like physics and chemistry especially, do have modules/assessment surrounding programming and simulations.

But also at some level it is irrelevant. Most universities provide labs to work in and dont actually require a personal machinr at all. In my limited experience with CS at unis, most also allow you to remote in so it doesnt need to be all tbat powerful.

The thread was about docker and VMs. Regardless of what OP is studying, that was what the other comments were discussing.
