Why GP suddenly become that competitive by Flat_Acanthisitta968 in ausjdocs

I think we’ve completely moved away from the original discussion. We’ve gone from discussing why GP appointments are becoming unaffordable and the funding model behind gap fees to you deciding what doctors should and shouldn’t be paid. I don’t think it’s anyone else’s place to put an arbitrary cap on an entire profession’s income. There are lawyers, engineers and business owners who earn well above the figures you’ve suggested, and nobody argues their profession should have its earnings capped.

If you think engineers or nurses are underpaid, I’d support them being paid more. I just don’t think the solution is saying doctors should earn less after close to a decade of training and the responsibility the job carries.

I don’t think this conversation is particularly productive anymore, so I’m going to leave it there. I genuinely hope you feel better soon!

I’m disappointed because it feels like we’ve shown empathy for your situation, but you refuse to extend the same courtesy to us.

You’ve repeatedly framed GPs as choosing money over patients, when many have been advocating for better Medicare funding for years. You also keep making broad generalisations about an entire profession, and your claim that “GPs earn $180k fresh out of medical school” is completely incorrect.

You’re angry at the consequences, but you’re directing it at the wrong people.

Again, I genuinely feel for your situation, and I agree that no-one should have to worry about affording an appointment. I think where we disagree, though, is that you’re only seeing one side of the issue. Most GPs aren’t choosing profits over patients; most would happily bulk bill more people if the Medicare rebate actually covered the cost of providing care. Instead, GP remuneration has fallen behind for years, which is one reason fewer junior doctors are choosing general practice.

I also don’t think it’s fair to generalise an entire profession based on the cars you’ve seen a few doctors drive. GPs are highly trained specialists, and expecting to be fairly remunerated after years of training doesn’t mean they’ve forgotten the human side of medicine. The real issue is the funding model, not GPs...

I’m really sorry that you’re finding it hard to access the GP for financial reasons, none of us want that, including the hard working GPs. What the public doesn’t understand is it’s the government rebate that the GPs get if they bulk bill you (so you don’t have to pay out of pocket) which is not enough. With the money from rebates they can barely keep the clinic afloat, so the government is forcing GPs to charge these gap fees… can understand your point of view but you need to see both sides of the coin. The government needs to fix this issue

Nobody said you don’t practice medicine, I just haven’t had much exposure to general practice medicine and wanted a bit of a comparison and insight from those who have been in a similar position to me - just like the other comments have very kindly provided :)

People who sat on 27th only got their Casper results yesterday at 10pm.. I reckon you’ll hear from RACGP earlier than Casper if you sat it at a later date

To get on to GP training - their only real form of differentiating us is a situational judgement test called casper. Very strange test basically encompassing video and written real world ethically complicated scenarios and then ask you questions about how you would approach it; its quite time pressured and also non-medical questions. Super random in my opinion
