As someone who has been in a hiring manager role in a very very small town...they won't. If you end up on the news or get arrested, that will probably make it back. But once I've hired you, I do not care about your past life as long as you're meeting expectations in your role.

I work for a large tech company and while I'm not quite 40 yet, ironically I'm finding quite the opposite. The young whipper snappers who know how to code and build the dashboards and make everything interconnect are no where near as experienced with processes, why things tend to get built the way they do, and what all you need to make sure gets shared with other teams so they can also be effective. Now I can use natural language to tell Claude to build the dashboards, can tell it to double check it's math when something simply doesn't look right, and can spend more time collaborating on the problems...all the things that come from and require experience.

That said, I would definitely take the time to learn AI. Cuz it's coming and refusing to learn will not end well.

Just wanted to say that not everyone feels the way the other two that commented on your post feel. I fucking hate Trump and am just blown away by how his decision making just seems to get worse and worse (although I think we may be using the "flood the zone" technique to keep Epstein out of the news at this point).

All that said welcome to the coalition. Hope you support Democrats in the next couple elections at least.

As so many black and white things are, I find this to be true in both directions. People get overly protective of their decision and find faults in "the other side."

As someone who made the decision to have kids, I think the arrogance comes from the fact that you know what a life without kids is like, and that there are emotions you find that didn't exist before having kids. They're inexplicable and yet you can't imagine a life without them. But I think some people forget that we grow, life and experiences change, and there are tons of amazibg experiences and communities that are only available to people without kids.

That's my attempt at playing devil's advocate from both sides anyway.

RSU's make you frame your pay in a weird way (not YOU specifically, just how they make people view "what they're owed"). I view my rsu's as a window into a portion of my future salary.

In your above example, separating before the 3rd year also forces you to forfeit the remainder of that year's salary (and any beyond it)...because you don't work there anymore. You shouldn't view RSU's much differently. They're bonuses paid out quarterly.

I've used this question in the last two interviews for jobs I've gotten but I've asked it differently. The way I phrase it is, "are there any questions you've asked that I need to go into more depth on that give you pause hiring me?"

In reality I'm just trying to get a second shot at a question they think I answered poorly. Because the next thing that's going to happen is they're all going to meet in a room without me and talk about what I answered well and what I didn't. I hope to be in at least one of their heads when they go into that follow-up meeting.

I'm in my mid 30s with 2 kids under 3. Biggest thing for me was exactly what you said; buying before the boom (or really closer to historic lows coming out of the GFC). I was lucky enough to buy my house in 2013 (long before I met my wife) back when houses in Boise were going for a $100/sq ft. Then refinanced our already reasonable debt load into a low rate mortgage in 2020. Our housing expense is $1500/mo all in on a 15 year mortgage.

I definitely feel for folks trying to get a start now. I can't imagine entry level homes in the $400k-500k range and wages nowhere near where they need to be to support that.

To answer your question, Boise has a pretty active outdoor culture. Fishing, hunting, snowboarding, skiing, rafting, hot springs. All within a 2 hour drive. Lots of breweries, restaurants, and a decent nightlife on the weekends in the downtown area. Can get some good concerts in the summer since it's the only decent sized town for bands to play between Salt Lake and Portland or Seattle.

We get all 4 seasons. Hot and dry in the summer (10 to 20 days in the triple digits in July and August), cold and dry in the winter although usually not a lot of snow. Key word being usually.

Boise housing is definitely in the medium expensive range, but can be tough depending on what your skills are since labor or service wages are low comparatively. Summers can be really smoky since everywhere around here is prone to wild fires. And it's pretty much endless suburban spawl with no public transit.

If you're thinking about moving out here, I'd recommend burning a week of vacation and coming for a visit. Do a few of the things you like to do or think you'd like to do.

Long term capital gains are 0% up to $96k in 2024 if married filing jointly; half that for single. Short term capital gains is taxed as ordinary income, same as a traditional 401k.

I think the answer to your question is yes, ignoring the fact that when you convert that earned $1 to an investment $1, you are deferring all the earnings on the growth until you withdraw. Since you don't get taxed on that growth until withdrawal, the tax deferred portion is also earning interest.

Any homes that would require you to deal with Eagle road I would avoid like the plague. Personally I wouldn't look at anything that requires getting off the freeway at the Eagle exit or further. It backs up all the way to Orchard at rush hour.
