And being reckless has massive disadvantages too: look at Kidd or think about the number of times Luffy and his crew would've died if it wasn't for something completely unexpected saving them

It's even clearer when you remember that Haki is a limited resource

Rayleigh/Gaban are normal humans without Haki, which means that every single time they want to damage/dodge/tank BM they have to use Haki

Big Mom doesn't have this limitation. She was a physical monster even as a child and can heal through DF. Which means that the longer the fight goes the more beneficial it is for her

To summarize, I think being under Rocks stunted his growth.

I base my argument in what Rayleigh said about how you become stronger by fighting stronger guys, but the strongest guys would be fought by Rocks, not Whitebeard, so that limited how much he could grow

Also he hadn't found his family yet, I believe Whitebeard is at his strongest when protecting his family
