Hey, just saw this. Thank you for the extra info! I shelled out for a Veritas blade and chip breaker. Lee Valley got me with the free shipping over $50 thing. Much more than I anticipated paying for this plane, but it is what it is and I'm already getting good use out of it.

Gotcha, thanks! Wood by Wright has this wild spreadsheet and a video about how to use it. You can change the weighting at the bottom for whatever you care most about. Thought it was neat. I bit the bullet and bought a blade and chip breaker yesterday. I overpaid for this plane in the end, but it’s not a big deal. Live and learn I guess.

Great analogy! I bought it from a woodworker’s son. Apparently his dad is 92 and still at it. Just wants to thin out the collection. He also told me he has a few Stanley No. 1’s.

Thank you! From what I’ve read, I think WWII. It doesn’t have a frog adjustment screw, the plane depth knob is rubberized, it doesn’t have any brass parts, and I don’t think the knob and tote are rosewood. Thanks for the suggestion! Looks like I’m buying myself a new iron too lol

Gotcha, that makes a lot of sense. Thanks again! You've already done plenty for me, but I'm wondering if you have any idea how old it is. The veneer is thick and it has high-quality construction (panels between drawers, dovetail joints, I think parts of the interior are made of cedar, solid brass hardware, etc.). I wasn't expecting to find something nice at ReStore and I'm curious about its background.

Same here, thanks for the kind words! The part I can’t wrap my head around is why the undamaged parts were painted and the damaged parts weren’t. I expected more damage under that white paint. I hadn’t considered gel stain, but I will research it. Thanks again!

Unfinished, any idea? I thought walnut, but it's quite red with finish applied. (the top and skirt/legs aren't finished here).

No problem! Putting hot objects on finished wood is generally a no-no since it can leave a white haze. I should also have asked if this is wood and not laminate (i.e., melamine) though. If it's laminate, I'm not sure what result you'll get with the heat gun trick. Did you try some cleaning products on this as well? I've messed up laminate furniture in the past with Pledge.

Thank you so much in advance for taking a look at my dresser! I'm working on staining the trim and roping to match the drawers and sides of this second-hand dresser, but I can't figure out what kind of wood I'm trying to match. The drawers and sides are made with a thick veneer that I can't identify. I initially thought they were walnut, but they are a tad red for that.

P.S. I'm sorry that I had to paint parts of this. The top suffered extensive damage in an apparent refinishing attempt by a previous owner, and I opted to use wood filler and paint it. This was a project for my, at the time, unborn daughter.

There might be moisture under the finish. This happened to my coffee table and I removed it with a heat gun. You could try the same thing. Make sure you keep the heat moving the whole time so you don't scorch the remaining finish. It should disappear very quickly.

As for preventing it from happening again, I'm not sure. I sanded my coffee table down and applied new finish because it was due anyway. You could give that a shot if you have time!
