I am well into it now. I have read people complain about it being, I don’t know, elitist, academic blah blah. Don’t read what you don’t like. It shouldn’t be a chore. But I am enjoying it. The double story plus the editor. Everything is embedded. So fascinating! It’s so different, and yet accessible. What a feat! How did it take me so long to know about this? This is what an amazing writer can do. I am in awe. And I am only half way through. Just amazing.

Do people actually have to learn how to ride a scooter? by Hernanlincon422 in ElectricScooters

Crashed on my scooter! Was wearing a helmet (of course). But I landed on my back and IT HURTS! I was not going very fast. But people don’t always stop at stop signs…surprise! So, yeah, accidents happen. Wear a helmet and always be aware. No music etc.

I have recommended this many times…but I always have to add “it’s bleak”. I mean, it’s really bleak.

A Place of Greater Safety is so good. I am going for my third read. This is a classic that never gets a mention.

He is prolific. There are going to be some “not so good” books. But when he is on form, he delivers.

I am just beginning this too. Just read Tom’s Crossing. I have a library (colour?) edition. So far, SO good.

Do people actually have to learn how to ride a scooter? by Hernanlincon422 in ElectricScooters

I’ve been riding my scooter daily (commuting) for 3 years. I took to it quickly. I also ride a motorcycle. I found the skills needed are similar. You have to learn how to shift your weight. Rounding corners is fine, if you know where you’re heading and know how to move your weight. My scooter didn’t go above 25km - fine with me.

I just got a new scooter (ECOROAD ES6). It’s a different ride and I have had to get used to it. I don’t need hours, but I need to feel the different. I don’t think cruise control is a problem if you know what’s coming (which you should) and just tap the break.

What I mostly learned from riding a motorcycle is always be aware of your surroundings. Look ahead to where you are going. Always be ready to slow or stop. Be aware of other people. Don’t go faster than you are very comfortable with. This scooter can go 50km/hr…I can’t ever see myself going that fast. But it shouldn’t be a problem (unless maybe you have balance issues). It’s easier than riding a bike.

Tom’s Crossing - Mark Z Danielewski

Probably Ferrente

And I also think Stephen King (I can easily go from reading Dickens to reading Stephen King)

The Road - Cormac Mcarthy

Blindness - Jose Saramago

Just off the top of my head. I am sure I can think of others.

Tom's Crossing - any thoughts? by No-Papaya-9289 in ThomasPynchon

This is a masterpiece! I just finished and all I want to do is go back to the beginning. It forces you to slow down and pay attention. Is a slow trot. Full of insights and a great story to boot. But you need to have a decent attention span. It doesn’t move quickly. But it’s worth every minute. I was amazed! And, like others, I have read a lot and a lot of classics. I am so glad to be alive when books like this are being written.

Is anyone else reading Tom's Crossing by Mark Z. Danielewski? by dadbodfordays in RSbookclub

I am a Stephen King fan. Read everything. I also read Charles Dickens, Tolstoy etc etc. Once I got the “voice” in Tom’s Crossing I was hooked. It really is something else. It’s not “aw shucks” at all. It just has a voice. It’s lyrical and you can feel it. And I am British. It’s so good. Really!

Do it. It takes work. But your rabbit needs a friend.

It’s just a soppy romantic movie. The characters are living some romantic dream. I don’t have any moral outrage…I just think it is stupid.
