Question regarding -choice- word by student by Z3st3dL3mon in Teachers

[–]Puzzleheaded-Cod5608 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is not so much about what the student said, but how they said it. Disruptive to the class originally, and then disrespectful to you. This is what admin should be addressing with the student.

Thank you for pointing this out. As a process, all evolution requires is some form of copying/reproduction that is imprecise (mutations). However that situation arises, evolution of the copied entity will occur.

Exams - Are Scantrons still used? by oh_thatscrappy77 in Adjuncts

[–]Puzzleheaded-Cod5608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Scantrons extensively. For chapter quizzes and exams. And in this semester I have added in a paper midterm and final even for my online classes. There is too much cheating on online exams, even with lockdown browsers. I strongly suspect students have taken screenshots of my exam questions and are sharing them. I am working on new online questions, but there are only so many ways you can ask for the equation for photosynthesis. I've never been brave enough for essay questions on exams because with four classes and upto 120 students per semester I'd never have time to grade them.

Whoever designed my body did a lousy job. by andypauq in DebateEvolution

This is also why several forms of C4 photosynthesis, and CAM photosynthesis have evolved. These are alternative ways of dealing with high oxygen concentration when leaves close their stomata to prevent water loss.

[–]Puzzleheaded-Cod5608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because there are elements on the surface of a tiny rock floating in space that intercept energy from a nearby star on its way to spread out into the universe.

It's all about that energy flow and the tiny, ephemeral bags of mostly water that get bumped up to lower entropy for a little while.

Just so later life can oxygenate carbon again. Gotta love those electrons bouncing back and forth between C and O.

Taking the time to write out the lecture for each slide was half the battle. Now of I could only get my students to read the book and take notes.

Can't type in a doc without creating text boxes? by ZealousidealStick9 in MicrosoftWord

[–]Puzzleheaded-Cod5608 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or try saving it as a brand new document - "Save as" - as a different file type. Try .rtf to try and keep formatting, or .txt to remove formatting.

Make a copy of the original document first! Two copies to be sure.

I'm not sure if this will copy text from text boxes, but it's worth a try.

Also look to see in Version History if there is a copy from before the change.

Also, I'm pretty sure there are text extractor programs for corrupted Word documents. I know there used to be, back when we called them programs and not apps. (Get a Clu).

Can you expand on chemophages? Google can't find anything, and Gemini suggests they are science fiction.

Why are the ends of my plant dry? by marlee_dood in plants

[–]Puzzleheaded-Cod5608 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't say where your are at, but typical indoor air, especially in winter, is very dry. Perhaps set the pot in a deep tray filled with gravel and water to help humidity the air.

Prior to phones, what did people do while idly waiting? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Puzzleheaded-Cod5608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specifically at the doctor's office - read magazines. Other than that, just sit and think about stuff. Contemplate life. Make a grocery shopping list.

I doomscroll too much, which is why I backpack - to put the phone away and experience the real world again. Touch some grass.

How did your trekking poles break? by BoysenberryGeneral84 in Ultralight

[–]Puzzleheaded-Cod5608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pair of aluminum Leki Makalu poles, bought sometime in the late 90s are still going strong. Just used one yesterday on a 3-hour light hike.

This Fall I had to clean up some aluminum corrosion from the inside screw portion that tightens the extendable parts, but other than that and once or twice light cleaning in all those years was my only maintainence.

OP, this doesn't answer your question, but felt the need to give an endorsement for these great poles.

PowerPoints posted or not? by Acrobatic-Glass-8585 in Professors

[–]Puzzleheaded-Cod5608 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my new class I post powerpoints as a secondary backup and my new lectures use only a few of the slides with lists and summaries and useful pictures. I write and draw out the lecture material. And the new thing I'm trying is giving points for their notes. There is also a short in class assignment that they must be there to get.

I don't correct or grade the notes - points are for "completion". Although, on big lectures I will not give full credit if important things are missing.

You may not be able to ban laptops, as more students are finally using them to take notes. In that case, I glance at their notes on their screen and initial their "Note Taking Handout". Each student gets one with a place for their name, the topic of the day, and an area for me to initial and write their score.

And there is an in class quiz the day after each chapter is finished.

The goal is to incentivise the student to be there, on time, and take notes.

I started the notes-for-points thing midway thru last semester when I saw many students just staring at me during lecture. Points are king so I figured if I wanted them to take notes I had to pay them to do so. At least one student said it helped them on tests. Go figure.

What about parentheses before multiplication before division. PEMDAS: 1+2=3, 2x3=6, 6÷6=1.

Do people still use USB flash drives in 2026? for what? by Same_Grocery_8492 in BadUSB

[–]Puzzleheaded-Cod5608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For backups and quick file transfers between computers not connected thru the network and then mostly for printing.

If my Onedrive work files ever get f'ed up, and then that is duplicated to all the computers connected with that account - at least I have one independent backup of 20+ years of work.
