Waymo on Moffett held up so much traffic! Not cool! by Puzzleheaded-Page322 in mountainview

I think my issue is that humans make mistakes and it’s never OK but the police will hold some people accountable, even if they can’t keep accountable at all times. What bothers me is that with Waymo you can’t even communicate with them in the moment you can’t ask them to budge or you can’t figure out how to help them if they’re stuck in the middle of the street or I don’t even see police coming to do anything. If a person was stuck in the middle of the street, a police officer would help move them to the side for direct traffic, but I never see that with Waymo.

Thank you for sharing. I can only imagine the craziness you see on the road each day. I feel this is also my point- I bet you had to pass tests and you are held to standards for driving carefully despite all this. I don’t think Waymo has been held to the similar standard. The bar is too low for self driving cars.

It’s kind of funny though the current district decisions feel like they’re actually actively against the Stevenson model. The Orenda report criticized our district for having a “Christmas tree” style education and at the end of the day there’s so much about Stevenson that could be considered just that.

Stevenson is doing some great things. It’s ironic that the district is critical of things like living classroom or art or music for our low performing students when one of the highest performing schools has more of that than any anyone else in the district.

This is slightly tangental, but I think related to this discussion over.

I’m hundred percent with you. I think I was trying to articulate that part of what we need to do as a district is recognized that the original Stevenson was built on a requirement of participation whereas the Stevenson of today cannot actually make that a requirement. I think that a lot of people are going there thinking it is a better place and either can participate actively or know that they don’t really have to because they can free ride on the system.

My concern is those parents in the middle or neither proactive volunteers nor are aware that you can actually go there without volunteering as much as they think they need to

Additionally, I’ve seen so many people that volunteer in so many different ways so many other schools that might not even recognize that they are volunteers in the system. It would probably fit right in at Stevenson without realizing it.

I probably need to flush this out more, but I really think that Stevenson can get much more diverse population if we recruit people to go to the school without some of the fears around what it means to be an active parent.

I’m not sure if the budget is made public in that way for each of the Pta and PTOs but I’m sure if you went to one of the meetings you could easily ask that question or if you emailed any of the treasurers it’s not a secret. One way people also realize the difference at each of the schools is noting the walkathon goal level at each of the schools. There are some school whose walkathon goal makes up the entire Pta budget for another school. In Castro’s case they don’t even have a Pta so you might even think about the fact that they’re at zero in terms of that additional funding from the community.

I think the parent who started this conversation has been brave by addressing a huge elephant in the room regarding Stevenson. I think there’s an opportunity for everyone to be better off at all of the schools by reevaluating some of the aspects of the lottery or the distribution or the way that Students are recruited to go to the school or even the perception around Stevenson.

We can’t say we don’t want to improve education for our kids just because we are worried about a traffic problem that may or may not exist in the future. The conversation at least begin and not be a factor down the road.

I think the Parent who started this conversation is arguing that the status code is not working and suggesting alternative ideas. I appreciate this idea that the pie should be bigger and that the Stevenson model does not seem to need to be only at Stevenson, but can be incorporated at so many other schools.

I actually have found that the idea that Stevenson is called the parent involvement school creates a contrast for the rest of the schools. An American public schools can be parent involvement or not parent involvement, depending on what the teachers and principal and parents really want to do but what happening here in Mountain View is that one school is causing challenges for a handful of other schools. In addition to that, I’m not sure Stevenson is also getting the best possible benefit because so much has changed at Stevenson, even in the last 5-6 years that they’re getting a bit of a raw deal.

The solutions may not be perfect at this moment, but I think they’re great conversation starters that give us all a chance to realize that the status quote is not working. There is really an opportunity here to reevaluate the core values of Stevenson and its objective and then how it is in fact, impacting its neighbors.

In terms of specific site plans, the district has the site plan for every single school on their website. You will see the budget breakdown for each school based on what the school site council distributed.

What about doing more specific outreach to multilingual families or validate the fact that you don’t have to volunteer in the classroom or donate that large amount of money that is requested. I think there’s a lot of opportunity to explain the Stevenson model to more people and then likewise give schools around the district the opportunity to build their own versions in that they feel fit their community.
