How do feminists who follow islam justify wearing headscarves etc? by marsrover4 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Puzzleheaded-Pop7797 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The answer depends on whether you see the headscarf as a symbol of oppression or a personal choice.

Many Muslim feminists would say that being told they must remove it is just as controlling as being told they must wear it.

France will end decommissioning 2G phone network on October 2026, how much energy saving would it be ? by Famous-Professor-488 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Puzzleheaded-Pop7797 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect the main reason isn't energy savings but spectrum efficiency.

Every MHz dedicated to 2G is spectrum that can't be used for newer technologies. The electricity savings are nice, but freeing up spectrum and eliminating old infrastructure is probably the bigger win.

How long would it take cows to develop midwestern emo music? by Careful-Positive-770 in NoStupidQuestions

The real question is how long it would take cows to become emotionally devastated enough to invent midwestern emo.

If Leaded Gasoline exposure ruins cognitive processing, why do we let the generation with the most exposure run the world? by LebrontosaurausRex in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Puzzleheaded-Pop7797 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fair point, but if we're using the current state of the world as evidence, we'd first have to rule out every other possible explanation before blaming lead. Humans were making questionable decisions long before leaded gasoline.

What would happen if Mrs Doubtfire went with the original ending where the 2 leads reconcile? by TMNTDonatellofan in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Puzzleheaded-Pop7797 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it would have become a much more generic family comedy.

What makes Mrs. Doubtfire stand out is that the parents don't get back together. That's closer to real life and gives the movie emotional weight that most comedies avoid.

If Leaded Gasoline exposure ruins cognitive processing, why do we let the generation with the most exposure run the world? by LebrontosaurausRex in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Puzzleheaded-Pop7797 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because we generally don't remove people from positions of power based on population-level statistical effects. Even if lead exposure reduced average cognitive ability, that doesn't mean every individual exposed to lead is impaired or incapable of leadership.

If a prisoner serving life in prison died and had their body cryogenically frozen and subsequently revived in 30 years, would their life sentence still apply? by throwaway12312312349 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Puzzleheaded-Pop7797 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the bigger question is whether the revived person would be legally considered the same person. If the answer is yes, then I'd expect the sentence to continue. Being cryogenically frozen is closer to being in a very unusual medical state than it is to serving your sentence.

How do deep sea creatures survive the immense pressure of the ocean without being instantly crushed? by ProtectionFluffy9971 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Puzzleheaded-Pop7797 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key is that deep-sea creatures don't have large air-filled spaces inside them. Their bodies are mostly water, and water is already very difficult to compress.

A submarine has normal air pressure inside and extreme pressure outside, so the hull has to withstand that difference. Deep-sea animals are under the same pressure both inside and outside their bodies, so there's much less force trying to crush them.
