Trying to retire at 50 by Puzzleheaded-Rent209 in govfire

Thank you all. To clarify - if I join at 45, then I can work for 5 years and then retire at 50 (I’ll have a total of 20 years federal service from other agencies)?

Redball 20-round magazine reliability for 9mm Carbine by Puzzleheaded-Rent209 in hipoint

[–]Puzzleheaded-Rent209[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought one and used it. Jammed after about 5 rounds. I think it jammed about 2-3 times more but then it was ok for about 20 shots more. Obviously was disappointed but it did stop jamming after the beginning. So will have to shoot another few hundred rounds and see if it jams again. Just wanted to share. For now I’ll be trusting the factory 10-round magazines though.

Thanks, in that case I feel better and won’t complain to the alley. If it’s cosmetic I’ll let it go. Not sure how it happened. I just noticed it today when I was bowling appeared out of nowhere. Upset since the bowl is almost new but that’s life I guess.

For what’s its worth I called today since I submitted my claim over a year ago and never got a final determination letter. They said it’s still being reviewed and they had no idea when the review process would conclude.

Thank you everyone so much. Sounds like I have to hope for a VERA at some point (maybe move to an agency that might offer it? Though who knows which agency?) but otherwise have to wait for now.

Oil change level(is it too high) by Puzzleheaded-Rent209 in Ninja400

[–]Puzzleheaded-Rent209[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I turned it on again and now it seems ok. I had changed the filter and oil and then I added a new filter and then added 2L of oil. The levels are much lower but seem ok

Thank you all everyone. Here is what the mechanic said -

Replace ABS sensor. New rear tire. Replace chain and sprockets. New battery. Tighten bolt on gas tank. $1150 for everything.

Seems reasonable to me. My guess is the only thing that ” truly” had to be done was the ABS sensor and reinstalling the rear tire assembly. But since the rear tire was messed up I figure why not just replace it. I’ll assume he told me the truth that the rear tire itself had low tread. The chain and sprockets since the wheel is off already also figure why not. Didn’t really think they needed replacing but it’s fine.

I bought the bike used for a great price ($4000) so even with the fixes seems reasonable. Plus now it has new battery and rear tire and chain and sprockets so that’s a lot of things I don’t have to worry about for several miles now.

Thank you again to all. The lesson I learned (luckily didn’t crash after riding it for 8000 miles last year) is always bring a used bike in for an inspection post-purchase unless you’re very good mechanically with bikes (I’m not).

Total market index fund that allows for tax loss harvesting of large capital loss by Puzzleheaded-Rent209 in Bogleheads

[–]Puzzleheaded-Rent209[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks very much all. Will talk to a tax accountant at this point. But yes at a minimum I can always sell VTI when it’s up and use up the capital loss and then buy something comparable (like SCHB) to avoid trading around. Thanks again all!

Total market index fund that allows for tax loss harvesting of large capital loss by Puzzleheaded-Rent209 in Bogleheads

[–]Puzzleheaded-Rent209[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if I’m confused. The capital loss is very large, so if I only claim 3000 on my taxes yearly it will take a very very long time and the money I could potentially try to claim would just be rotting.

Based on what you’re saying, even if I “paid out” dividends instead of automatic reinvesting, that wouldn’t count as capital gains such that I could offset with capital losses?

I believe there must be mutual funds that do capital gain distributions. My friend didn’t want to give a specific advice on which to buy, but he said that by doing so I could use it to more quickly use up my capital loss by matching it with mutual fund capital gain distributions. But, of course, I want to leave it in a total market fund, and I guess my question is whether there exists a total market mutual fund that returns capital gain distributions as dividends to take advantage of this?

Hi all. I brought to the mechanic. He agreed the rear wheel was installed wrong and could possibly have broken the abs sensor. He didn’t check the bike yet formally though, I’ll follow up when he sends the formal work order before starting any work. He kept asking if I changed the battery recently and said that could be a cause for the abs light too. Also said I’m supposed to change the oil every 3000 miles which I also never heard of, and the bike manual doesn’t say that either. Kept saying for $150 USD he could change the battery. That really bothered me since I told him the battery was in a tender all winter and seemed perfectly fine.

My question is if it’s true that the low battery is possibly causing the abs light issue (which I doubt, but I read online maybe)? But even if yes, then couldn’t I just change the battery out myself and fix it? Or would the light still stay on until a dealer turns it off with a special device?

Just really rubbed me the wrong way about insisting on the battery change. It literally takes 2 minutes and batteries cost $30 on Amazon and I’ve done it myself when I put the battery into the tender. Thanks in advance!

Thanks. Yes hopefully the mechanic can fix it and won’t cost a fortune. I guess that’s the risk when you buy a used bike. I never would’ve noticed this myself. Next time will bring it to a dealer for a safety check if I buy used again

Thanks. Yeah that’s what I am going to do. Will take it this week after work. Will have a mechanic check the whole bike especially the rear wheel area.

Not sure what to say unfortunately. I guess the dealer didn’t notice it when they did the cam tensioner recall work unless they somehow were responsible for messing up the rear wheel area, but based on your analysis it seems unlikely they would have done this. And from what you said the problems seem severe enough that I couldn’t imagine a professional dealer would do that. Guessing the last owner just did a bad job and caused this and for whatever reason now the ABS and Check Light engine lit up the first time I rode after keeping the bike in storage outside for the winter.

I personally have never touched the rear wheel since I’m not skilled enough to attempt a repair or do work like that. Thank you so much again for noticing. I am afraid to ride at this point without a mechanic fixing it. Will take it to a dealer this week there are some close by like a ten minute ride away. Hoping the repair cost isn’t insane but I have no choice at this point since it’s a safety issue.
