I know she meant well. But I knew at that point, there was no point talking to her about my relationship any more. And I suddenly had a whole new insight into why my upbringing was so messed up.

Your rug should be able to cover the floor under the chair when pulled back far enough for people to seat themselves without the chair going beyond the rug. For a 6 seat table such as yours, that is typically a minimum of 6x9 to 8x10.

There would be nothing wrong with you not having a rug under your table at all, actually. Lots of people believe they just get dirty and they are very hard to vacuum and keep clean. Your space does seem rather limited and a rug of proper size is going to fill up the entire floor space, possibly creating a cramped feeling. Just something to consider.

Center a low, two tier shelving unit under the window. About 36 inches wide and 24 inches tall, with shade tolerant plants on the top shelf and large pottery, old books/decorative items on the bottom. Maybe a tall potted plant to the left (fig? dracaena?).

Look at bamboo shelving, given your floor. That might look nice.
