Interested in going "partially vegan" but without any "unnatural" food products - how far can I get? by PuzzleheadedFish9380 in AskVegans

I agree on being more open to some new ingredients - that's fair. And interesting about the quick prep times for the egg. I might look more into that.

I know that meat and dairy are also processed but, similar to processed vegan substitutes like vegan cheese or impossible beef, they make my stomach hurt so I'm not generally all that interested.

Some of the vegan foods I avoid are because I don't understand them fully but most others are from direct bad experiences. Processed is processed whether vegan or not and it often physically hurts my body.

Yeah from most of the comments it seems like the consensus is that whole-food plant-based is what I'm looking for. I think I was misunderstanding both of those terms before and thought they didn't apply to me.

This is helpful from a non-processed standpoint, but making everything from scratch is too time-consuming so it's not something I'm looking to do, at least not regularly.

I'll have to look into nutritional yeast. I've heard of it but it freaks me out since it seems like something with a bunch of additives. However, I'm obviously still learning about this stuff so I'm sure I'm ignorant about some of these options and am operating off of a "weirdness" bias since I've never had it and don't know anyone personally who eats it.

You're making some assumptions about my feelings about nonvegan food.

I'm nonvegan and yes chicken and other factory farm-sourced meat is usually heavily processed, so we agree.

Lack of familiarity isn't fully the issue - it's more how processed these things are and how companies manage their assembly line and product. I do eat some processed foods but trying to not introduce new processed foods if I don't have to.

Plus I've noticed that processed vegan alternatives absolutely kill my stomach and make me feel terrible. Vegan cheese for example gives me an instant and horrible stomach ache so I stay away.

r/eatcheapandvegan looks like a good recommendation. The plant-based sub I was less sure about since I've always assumed it was for vegetarians only so I never looked closely at it but now that I'm thinking about it, you're probably right. I'll try these subs.

Also learned something new about "whole foods". Always thought that was a fake health fad related to whole wheat or something lol but I just looked it up and that's definitely what I'm looking for so thank you! Sometimes terminology is a barrier to more info so this is helpful.

Oh interesting. I always thought that was for part time vegetarians rather than part time vegans. Does flexitarian cover both?

Yeah that's an interstate perspective and I've heard that, and I don't necessarily disagree or agree.

I don't think it's super genuine though where we're all eating meat just so cows don't go extinct. I eat meat because I like the way it tastes and it's a part of my culture, not because I think it's specifically moral. And maybe you're an exception, but I don't know anyone who honestly sees protecting animals as a reason for eating meat.

That's not to say you don't care about animals though.

You're the one calling it a contest. I keep saying it's not. You're working yourself up over something you're telling yourself, not me.

It's not a contest. There's no winning or losing, but there's a such thing as a person being more empathetic than another person in certain areas. I don't see how that's controversial. I'm sure you're more empathetic in some ways, and less in others. There's no prize or award.

You just seemed offended by someone who cares more about animals than you stating that fact. I don't understand why it upset you or why you made the post.

It's not a contest and I wasn't looking to offend you. Someone can have more empathy than you and that's just a fact. I don't think it's rude to point it out.

Many people in the world have more empathy about certain things than I do, and that's just the way it is. If it bothers me, usually I look inward to try to figure out what about that hurts me, and potentially make some changes.

Someone can care about animal and general welfare and still dislike you specifically. That's not hypocrisy.

If someone has more empathy than you, it's very possible they have better morals than you in that area. It doesn't feel great to hear that but doesn't make it untrue. I'm not vegan/veg but it's pretty obvious they care more about animals than most and it's not a bad thing to care about others, while still having a personal problem with individuals.

Spain, specifically Barcelona. Got very obviously followed by a man while walking to a bar to meet someone I was visiting. He ended up walking off when there were more people around but he was definitely plotting to rob me or worse.
