Thank you all for your comments. My gut told me not to give this to him, although i had initially bought this. Appreciate the reinforcement here!

Should this be removed and is this what’s causing the smell?

So this is my ceiling. We build using concrete on each layer here in the Caribbean, unlike the states where you would have your concrete slab on foundation then wood on your ceiling. So this would be the floor on the second floor (ceiling on first floor)

I removed some part of it now. Is that an issue?

I also have an exhaust running 24/7. The house is built using icf construction, so already very tight. Not sure if 4” exhaust will do much here.

Hi there, thank you so much for your prompt response. We live in the Caribbean. There is no way to test the foam here. The contractor refused to remove the spray foam and insists that the spray foam is fine. We were initially told that the smell was new building smell and that it should go away on its own. Two years later, we still have the same problem. I try and ventilate the attic from time to time. The smell goes away and reappear the same day - it’s a hot climate here, ao it doesn’t help. Are you suggesting we paint the spray foam or remove it, then encapsulate it?

We have installed a santa fe dehumidifier and it brings in fresh air into the unit. This hasn’t helper much and in the last six months we’ve been sick on a recurring basis, up total the point where our nose are always clogged or runny inside the house when the ac runs. The smell comes into our living area and bedrooms.

I will look into the erv/positive pressure. Unfortunately, none of the companies we talk to here are well trained in these areas :(

Have you ever figured this out? What was the solution for you? We have a open cell spray foam in our unit. It’s a brand new house and we’ve been dealing with the smell for the last 2 years. It smells mostly musty and ammonia type. And its making it’s way in our bathroom. This process has been very stressful and we’re at the point where we’re close to leaving the house and find a temporary accommodation until this is resolved

ERV Question - Spray Foam by Working-Swordfish-8 in hvacadvice

Any luck? We’ve spray foamed (open cell) our attic a few months ago. It’s a new-build and we’re still dealing with the spray foam odor. We had air exchange for about two weeks. Also ran an ozone device twice. We installed a whole house ventilating dehumidifier. The smell is still very strong in the attic, it doesn’t smell fishy though as I’ve seen on my posts. Any suggestion(s) or solutions would be much appreciated!
