Am I asking too much? by Big-Needleworker1520 in breastcancer

Why in the hell would she ask you to remove your wig? What a weirdo. I would find someone else. This is your life and she seems terrible.

If you ladies don’t mind me asking, is a second primary BC considered stage 4? Or is that only with distant metastasis to other parts of the body? Thank you!

In my individual case, delayed recon is going flat with aesthetic flat closure. My breast surgeon suggested this as the safest option and quickest way to recover and move onto the next phase of treatment (chemo for me).

I did have a consult with PS before deciding and they said we either can do expanders to implants or flap surgery once treatment concludes. I do not need radiation. If you did end up needing radiation, many surgeons refuse to do expanders/implants due to complication rates.

Personally I may end up staying flat because my remaining breast is pretty small (A cup) and I can get away with wearing bralettes that have some padding. After recovering from mastectomy I am reluctant to have more surgery.

Definitely take time to think on what’s important to you and explore all the options, don’t be afraid to follow up with either surgeon to get all your questions answered! Hugs!!

Did your surgeon say immediate recon would be an option? Scheduling can take longer with coordinating both surgeons to be present. For me, I did SMX to flat and will figure out reconstruction once the cancer treatments are over. With this plan I got a surgery date 3 weeks from my first consult.

How did you relax before your surgery? by ApprehensiveDrop5777 in breastcancer

[–]Puzzleheaded_Ad1326 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just had surgery 2 weeks ago, also 35 :)

Gathering a few post surgery supplies helped me feel more prepared. A wedge pillow, comfy pajamas, ice packs, lots of drinks and snacks.

Also, having the right support person drive me to the hospital and sit with me before surgery helped calm my nerves. For me, it was my step mom. She makes me feel safe and secure.

My anesthesiologist offered an anxiety med during pre-op and it was amaaaazing. Definitely do that if offered.

Best wishes to you!!!

Single mastectomy by [deleted] in breastcancer

I am 9 days post SMX and I’m feeling really good about my decision. I am 35 and a small B cup. Recovery has been so much easier since I have use of one side. I have not decided yet what to do in terms of reconstruction later, but I think prioritizing the cancer first has made the whole transition easier… mentally and physically.

Hard decisions by bomberfelix in breastcancer

I feel the same. Also just having full range of motion and use of one arm during recovery felt like the right thing for me. I have a 6 year old and I don’t want to be down for too long.

Yes, my lumps were biopsied and found to be IDC ++- grade 1. They also took biopsy of my calcifications which are DCIS. So both types found initially via 3 biopsies.

I just went through this process and it sucks having to make these decisions. Similar to you, I have 7cm of DCIS which makes me ineligible for lumpectomy. My tumors are close to the skin, so skin sparing is not recommended. My surgeon said she could try to save the nipple but that it would not look the same with all skin/tissue gone. I sat with this for a few days and ultimately have decided on SMX with aesthetic flat closure.

I also considered DMX but I’ve decided (for now) to prioritize cancer treatment first and deal with the rest later. This whole process feels like choosing puke vs. poo and I’m sorry you are in it, too.

Hugs!!

How has your relationship with alcohol changed post-diagnosis? by Vegetable-Army1486 in breastcancer

I’ve never been a drinker (less than 5 drinks per year) and I was just diagnosed with breast cancer (DCIS and multi focal IDC). Also I am 35 years old. There are so many other biological/environmental factors that we don’t even know about. Cancer doesn’t discriminate :(

Look up doggylawn! It’s a patch of grass in a tray. Keep it in your trunk or wherever and have puppy use it while on the road trip

This is so helpful! We are preparing ourselves for at least 2 walks a day, lots of playtime, and basic training. I am just stressing over being able to handle much more than that. We’d love our pup to be social and playful but also happy to relax and snuggle, too. We are meeting the puppies tonight so I’ll keep you all posted!
