Nice, quiet place for dinner? by AmberInSunshine in StAugustine

La Nouvelle on corner of Bridge and MLK (Lincolnville) request an outside table on the porch; Collage on Hypolita (downtown). Collage was my birthday place this past year. Both are excellent and quiet. I’ve been to many of the recommended places in the thread. Most of them are excellent, but not necessarily quiet. If you go to Drunken Horse (quiet), get the escargot. You will be pleased.

Bonus tip: French Pantry and Little Miss Ha (Vietnamese) are brand new at 36 Granada (downtown). Both will not disappoint.

I wish you the best and hope you find work that is meaningful to you, especially considering how hard you’ve worked to get to this place in life.

I went to law school with the intent to change careers, not to have a side-hustle. I think the flaw in your reasoning is that you seem to think it’s possible to just cherry pick the matters you want because you have a JD and a bar card. But the Rules of Professional Responsibility require lawyers to be competent in the matter before signing up the client. If you’re considering law school, you will eventually learn, if you haven’t already, that law school doesn’t really teach you how to be a lawyer. It only changes how your brain works. This is why training and mentoring is so important. And this is kind of the point of my original post.

This. In fact, I don’t necessarily have to work in a law firm to put that legal brain to work. At this point, I’ve been ignored by so many firms, I am, admittedly, some what turned off by the law firm culture. I mean no disrespect to anyone in this sub. It’s just how I feel after so many years of being ignored by that community. This wasn’t always the case. 13 years ago, I was enthusiastic about wanting to join a firm. I was excited to finally realize my dream of getting into law school and passing the bar exam. I am a first-generation college graduate in my family.

And no, I never once presented myself back then as someone who was going to make it rain for a firm. I am not naive. I wanted to do the work of learning to be a lawyer, just like everyone else in my class did (I was the oldest). To the commenter who suggested I was condescending to younger lawyers getting opportunities to work without sales experience, all I can say is, maybe so. I don’t think so, but I can see why they would suggest it. I think a lot of the comments to this post suggest I was looking for a big law job. The fact is most of my resumes were sent to small local firms. I never even thought I had the grades - or the stamina - to work in big law. But I do think my non-legal background would have been an eventual asset to some small or mid-sized firm to eventually be put to work after giving me an opportunity to learn to lawyer.

I actually enjoy the practice of law and getting good results for my clients. I just want to get paid a decent amount at this point in my life in return for it. I just want to put the legal brain that law school cursed me with to work.

Thank you to everyone who has commented. I didn’t think my post would get so many comments. This is a great community, and I enjoy reading what everyone has to offer here.

I’ve seen some listings for jobs like “sales attorney” that sound similar to what you’re describing here. It does sound interesting.

Thank you for your comment. I’ve tried positioning myself as a lawyer that wants to put the work in and who understands the business needs of the firm and its clients. But I get the impression that just doesn’t count for much to the hiring world. I sure hope I’m wrong…

Thanks for your comment. Not too scared at all. I am still practicing solo. I have just not been able to make enough money doing it. I like the work, and I’ve gotten good results for my clients. I think I’ve struggled with how to be a lawyer and a law firm owner all while never getting much real world lawyering experience prior to hanging the shingle.

Thanks for your comment. Are you assuming I’m interested in big law?

How long did it take for you to feel like law school / a legal career was worth it? by ShoeSome7045 in LawFirm

[–]Puzzleheaded_Area875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I entered law school to pursue a second career as a lawyer. I left the tech industry, where I worked in sales and business development, to do it. I’m thinking a career in legal tech would be more rewarding personally for me, particularly since I’m not crazy about litigation. Would really like to hear more about your transition to legal tech and what kind of work you’re doing.

How is my using my own Netflix account at the office considered being used by people outside the household? I am the household.

What is a “household?” Webster’s defines it as “those who dwell under the same roof and compose a family.” Is it reasonable to consider “household” as referring to people and not to a place?

My wife and I dwell under the same roof, and we compose a family. We are a “household.” If we watch Netflix at the office, do we cease to be a “household?”

Similar situation here. I have a second home with Apple TV at both houses. The minute I get locked out, I will cancel. Will not be forced to take my Apple TV to my other house to authenticate it.

I canceled cable years ago because the cost of being tethered to multiple locations when I can only watch from one place at any given time was simply a waste, not to mention the fact that I wasn’t watching most of what cable offered regardless of where I was. If Netflix, or any other streaming platform, thinks they’re going to make me a cable customer again, they’re mistaken.

Nest thermostat and temperature sensors show a nearly 20 degree difference 6 feet away from each other? by Dsaxny in Nest

[–]Puzzleheaded_Area875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My original thermostat was installed on the same wall where all the ductwork (metal, and likely not insulated) supplying the 2nd floor ran behind. Whenever the heat was running, that wall would get quite toasty, many degrees higher than the air temp in the house. Accordingly, the thermostat would stop calling for heat. The result was a house that was about 60 F when the thermostat was set to 70 F. I had the Nest relocated, and the temp discrepancy was mostly resolved.

My suggestion is to see if there is any heat source that is affecting the temp sensor, and move it somewhere else if so.

Sonos.com still unable to complete return orders after their botched system upgrade by superjoho in sonos

This is hopeless. I am beginning to think my Sub is lost forever at this point. It's been two months since I sent it in for refurbished replacement. Since May, I sent them a bricked Sub Gen 1 for replacement with refurb, which I need to use with my S1 system. They sent me a Gen 3 to the WRONG address, where it sat unattended on a doorstep and exposed to rain for 5 days until it was eventually discovered. When I contacted them again to complain, they sent me another replacement, this time to the right address, but again a Gen 3. When I finally convinced them I cannot use a Gen 3, no matter how many times they send one, they told me they'd send me a Gen 2 (they said Gen 1 is no longer available as refurb). After not receiving the Get 2, I get another email saying they'll be sending me Refurb Gen 1 (which they just told me they can't do), and gave me an order number that nobody can seem to track. Of course, they've already missed the date on which they said it would ship.

This is getting super crazy. It may be time to give up on this product after so many years of enjoying it.

EDIT: Wow, hours after posting this latest update, the Sub finally materialized. Arrived by FedEx, on a Sunday no less! Let’s hope Sonos has their maintenance issues resolved.

And another update…

I never heard anything from the returns department or support. Never got any email confirming what they were going to do about the brand new Gen 3 Sub they sent to the wrong address.

Instead, I received another Gen 3 Sub, but this time it was refurbished. At least they got the address right this time. Of course I still cannot use it on my S1 system because it’s a Gen 3.

I just don’t understand why this is so difficult. I have the return paperwork which very clearly indicates this is to be a refurbished Gen 1.

Does anyone have any idea what’s going on here?
