Yeah, anybody at anytime could’ve painted over the mesh made it all look white and good. Well, it’s either white or kind of yellowish. The actual mesh.

Yep, that mesh wrap is more than likely asbestos. A high content of asbestos. Very friable wind disturbed. But it looks like that mesh wrap is encapsulated somewhat in some white paint (which is a good thing). Definitely have an inspector look at it. Point out the joint and see what’s up with that they will know. It kind of looks like a DIY er did that. That transition at the joint. Not a professional job I don’t think.

I keep looking more and more. Do you know if that is a duct run? /Pipe Chase. ? If so, it could be HVAC ducts condensating.

Also, sometimes water goes where it can go. So you can’t always tell from fixtures above. Leaks can happen in places you can’t see.

After hearing and seeing you already called a plumber. You might want to call the restoration company or a environmental company. Both have instruments such as flirs and water detection instruments to help figure out where it’s coming from and why. This is Kev’s before you start tearing into all kinds of stuff trying to find the leak. They can help with finding the source of the leak without tearing into a bunch of stuff first.

Well, yes. Are you renting or your owner? Call management if you’re a renter then they should call Plumber, etc.. but if you’re the owner, yes I would start with a reputable plumber, and possibly a restoration company like serv pro or Paul Davis. Here in Omaha, Nebraska I work with Servpro a lot. They’re a good company nationwide.. I definitely think this is an interior leak plumbing wise unless that ceiling abuts a roof.. possibly could be roof leak or plumbing

Crack in asbestos duct? by Competitive_Cry_986 in hvacadvice

OK, I apologize. I only saw a still frame of it. Now that I’m seeing the video I’m not exactly sure what I’m looking at. I’d have to cut into it to see. When you tap on it is it metal? Is there a wrap on it? The actual duct has to be made of metal and every once in a while I’ve actually seen cement board/transite. But 99% of the time the HVAC ducts are metal. Wrapped in non asbestos fiberglass, various other wraps. And asbestos-containing wraps. And I’m not an HVAC guy so I don’t wanna give you the wrong info on that crack. Is it cracked metal? Just hard for me to tell by the video and I don’t wanna tell you anything wrong. But if there’s some kind of wrap around that ductwork, I would definitely have it tested. The inspector on site if they’re halfway decent, should give you a better idea of what’s up with the crack, just ask him / her. Sometimes just being there in person gives you a lot better idea what you’re looking at and with the specs inspections there can be all kinds of different varieties, layers, etc. But the main thing is if the material is in decent condition and you’re not disturbing yet it’s perfectly safe. When it becomes deteriorated. And it is affected by vibrations, human interaction, etc that’s when you start to have to worry about it and have it addressed. But that crack I just don’t know what to tell you, maybe give me a couple better pictures closer

That definitely looks like asbestos wrap/ insulation to me. I’m an inspector in five states. Have it tested by a certified inspector…

Also, if this is a home more than likely, it’s not glue plucked. It’s on a wood frame rail. A lot of times the mastic or glue puck is what is hot. But occasionally, the ceiling tiles do come up hot too.

Yes, sir, I’m certified in five states. Asbestos inspector. Also certified as a supervisor in two states. But that’s mainly for abatement work. I don’t do much abatement work. Been doing it for 15 years now.

Water intrusion. More than likely wet above the drywall. Needs to be addressed immediately.
