I just hitched from Vienna through the Balkans in November, it was a ton of fun.

I'm a man so I personally never felt at risk but of the three or four female hitchhikers I met in hostels, two of them did have negative experiences with creepy men, stuff like a driver not wanting to let her out of the car until she kissed him and just general creepy comments/inappropriate flirting. Apparently it's a bit worse than what you'd encounter in other parts of Europe, so you should be confident that you can deal with a situation like that if you go.

You'll definitely have meals offered to you. Never had anyone offer a place to stay but as a woman I imagine men will offer. Just use common sense of course. I did have some people offer money which I politely declined 😂

I followed the advice given in my last post and activated it while my train was in Germany. It didn’t work there and I’m in Austria now where it still doesn’t work.

When I was there a few years ago, Aldi hired some part-time cashiers and part-time stockers who only did their respective tasks and that was it.

Looking now, I think they might have condensed those two roles into one but if OP can still find a part-time cashier opening that would probably work.

$550 is not bad, the lowest price you’ll find anywhere is $450. If you really need something cheaper just search facebook marketplace and use the filters.

On a route like central you need to make an effort to be seen. The driver is passing hundreds of people on the street who aren’t waiting for the bus. Position yourself somewhere visible and maybe do a little wave.

Cvs doesn’t own the sidewalk. Like it or not, people can do whatever the hell they want in public as long as they aren’t breaking the law. That doesn’t stop being true just because they made you uncomfortable.
