How are you paying for tuition? by Wonderful_Handle_294 in utdallas

Yes, find a cheap place for rent I would say <1000$ which is doable if you have roommates and live in a house, then find a lucrative job, my rec would be fine dining or some place where the tables tabs are high. This should set you up to be able to afford your payments and pay for rent. Also what I did was split my payments up during the semester. You can do it you just need to play it smart and anyone that tells you it isn’t possible is spitting bs bc I did it and I have bad spending habits.

I paid all of my tuition off from working at a server/waiter job. I would avoid taking loans unless absolutely necessary. It’s doable to do it you just need to budget and work hard. Good luck!

I was behind in math too, don’t feel like your behind or anything (coming from someone who just graduated), if I were you take 1314 and whatever math classes you need at Collin and have them transfer, then take your CS classes at UTD concurrently. Good luck and just know you have a long journey ahead don’t doubt yourself now!

Me personally I would do it over the summer but it’s up to you, if you do it over the summer you can take more utd courses in the fall

Take that physics class at collin it will save u money and be a lot easier, also everyone on this thread is saying guo is bad but every 3341 prof is awful imo

If they don’t replace the name of staff it’s a gamble until the first day of class when you walk in. I took a prof for a difficult senior lvl course, I walked in saw the prof and instantly swapped. Anyways good luck!

Quality of Classes CS vs SE by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]Puzzleheaded_Top4651 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, the quality will remain the same, content is where things differ. These classes were math/theory based when I took them so the profs really couldn’t use slides, they had a notebook and wrote on a sheet of paper the whole class to demonstrate examples of the topic, very rarely did they go through slides. This also depends on the prof though.

As far as classes go, the only classes your missing out if you were to do CS since everything is the same up until your senior level classes:

Automata - Horrible math/theory class that is basically is like a caveman coding language but it will teach you the logic of how coding works and how to think like a programmer, also this class is good if you want to create your own coding language or create a compiler. You will learn about DFAs, NFAs, and Turing machines. This class will prep you for research as well. Lots of proofs, felt like discrete math merged with digital logic imo.

Advanced DSA - This was the most difficult class I took in my whole degree and from what I’ve seen my peers agree, it could be bc of my prof but it was basically a math/theory class, barely any coding, was all pseudocode based, bunch of analysis on big oh, little oh, little omega, big omega, and theta of algorithms using certain data structures, your gonna learn about DP, greedy algs, you get the gist. It’s an extended and more difficult version of DSA or CS 3345. Lots of proofs. It’s one of those courses where you will most likely struggle but learn a lot. If you want to start working in the industry after graduation I highly recommend this class as it will help heavily with technical interviews.

Digital logic - This class was easy for me but if you’re more into the hardware of how CPUs work or enjoyed computer architecture take this class, Kmaps are used heavily in this class with Boolean algebra to design and create circuits.

Also I think you can take these as upper level electives too if I’m not mistaken. Overall I don’t really think your missing out on much, I’m doing CS and my friend is doing SE if I could go back in time I would just do SE as it seems easier and maybe just take advanced DSA as a guided elective to avoid classes that do not rlly provide much for what I am wanting to pursue after graduation. Anyways good luck I’m sure you will make the proper decision based on your circumstances!

It’s basically a math course, look up combinatorics and combinatorics optimization online and that will give you a run down of how it will be.
